TEST 26

Section A

Directions: In this section, you will hear 8 short conversations and 2 long conversations. At the

end of each conversation, one or more questions will be asked about what was said.

Both the conversation and the questions will be spoken only once. After each

question there will be a pause. During the pause, you must read the four choices

marked A), B), C), and D), and decide which is the best answer. Then mark the

corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the center.

1. M: That was a difficult passage to translate.

W: I’ll say. Even David had trouble with this one!

Q: What does the woman imply about David?

2. W: I can’t understand why Harold changed majors. He would have made a great

mathematician.

M: I don’t know either. He loved the subject, and his grades were good.

Q: What can be concluded about Harold from this conversation?

3. M: Oh, so Charlene was able to get reservations for dinner here tonight.

W: Yes, just at the last minute.

Q: What had the man initially assumed?

4. M: I hope you will spend Christmas with us. We’ll have a big party on Christmas Eve.

W: I’d love to, but Jack and I are going to Australia. We’ll send you postcards from there. Q: What do we learn from this conversation?

5. M: Charles enjoyed his two-week drive through South China.

W: Yes, he said that he saw much more than he would have traveled by bus or train.

Q: How did Charles travel?

6. W: Were you hurt in the accident?

M: I was shocked at the time, but wasn’t hurt at all. My bike was totally damaged though. Q: What do we know about the man?

7. M: Let’s see if the basketball game has started yet.

W: started? It must be clear who is winning by now.

Q: What does the woman mean?

8. M: Think it over carefully, you must have left it somewhere.

W: But the problem is that I have to have it now. I need it to use my car, and when I get

home, to open the door.

Q: What happened to the woman?

Now you will hear two long conversations.

Conversation One

W: Why is it that some people are always buying beyond their means? I mean, they do not make

that much and spend half of their incomes on designer clothes as such.

M: My theory is that insecure people need to wear famous brand clothing to feel good. They

want people to know that they are good enough to afford the best.

W: Well, I don’t agree that name brands are just for the insecure. I mean, I like my designer

clothes too. I do think designer shoes are more comfortable.

M: So, you buy designer shoes for comfort? How about those ridiculous designer sweaters that

have holes in them and shoes that have 25 cm heels? You surely aren’t saying that these things are functional.

W: I disagree. Most designer and brand-name items are actually not useless. What you see on the

catwalks are just the extremes. What you find in the stores is more functional.

M: And not much less expensive! So don’t tell me that you’re into designer stuff.

W: Like I said, some things are worth spending the money on, like stylish but comfortable shoes.

But I wouldn’t get designer underwear, for example. I mean, for one pair of brand-name underwear, I can buy 10 pairs of sturdy cotton underwear at the market, and just throw them into the wash and not be heartbroken if they change color. But I’d buy a brand-name washing machine because I believe they work longer.

Questions 9 to 11 are based on the conversation you have just heard.

9. What are they talking about?

10. For what do some people like to buy designer clothes beyond their means according to

the man?

11. What does the woman think of those brand-name items at fashion shows?

Conversation Two

W: You must have heard about red tides.

M: Of course I have.

W: Red tides are no longer strange, due to their frequent occurrence in recent years. The State

Oceanography Administration said there were 28 red tides in China’s waters in the year 2000.

M: As we know, due to the food chain, man and other species may be badly affected. In the past

10 years, deaths attributed to this have increased in number, becoming a severe threat to 2

people’s health.

W: What is the specific reason for this?

M: Red tides are a natural disaster. Their frequent occurrence in recent years should be blamed

on unnatural influences.

W: What do you mean by unnatural influences?

M: Pollution. Untreated industrial and domestic sewage leads to an environment for an explosive

reproduction of red tide organisms. Another form of pollution is from offshore aquaculture. This unexpected product of offshore aquaculture has encouraged a favorable ecological environment for the development of red tide organisms.

W: And what has been done up till now?

M: Firstly, the Marine Environmental Protection Law, which took effect on April 1, 2000, has

been revised, in an effort to raise the public’s awareness of environmental protection. Secondly, the law-enforcing departments are making greater efforts to punish enterprises that drain untreated sewage into rivers and the ocean, regardless of environmental protection laws and the Government’s repeated bans. This year, the authorities closed 17 enterprises, large and small, which broke such laws.

W: That’s really good news. In addition, following the principle of prevention first, efforts will

be made to establish and improve nationwide red tide monitoring and early-warning systems and the disaster emergency response mechanism, so as to reduce economic losses and to protect people’s health.

Questions 12 to 15 are based on the conversation you have just heard.

12. How many cases of red tides occurred in China in 2000?

13. What do we know about red tides from the conversation?

14. What is the specific reason for the occurrence of red tides?

15. Which of the following is not mentioned as a measure to fight against red tides?

Passage One

Some people do not like anything to be out of place; they are never late for work; they return their books to the library on time; they remember people’s birthdays; and they pay their bills as soon as they arrive. Mr. Dodd is such a person.

Mr. Dodd works in a bank and lives on his own. The only family he has is in the next town: his sister lives there with her husband, and their son, Mark. Mr. Dodd seldom visits his sister, but he sends them Christmas cards, and he has not forgotten one of Mark’s seventeen birthdays.

Last week Mr. Dodd had quite a surprise. He drove home from the bank at the usual time, driving neither too slowly nor too fast; he parked his car where he always parked it, out of the way of other cars, and he went inside to make his evening meal. Right away, there was a knock at the door. Mr. Dodd opened the door and, to his surprise he found a policeman standing on the doorstep.

“What have I done wrong?” Mr. Dodd asked himself, “Have I driven on the wrong side of the road? Has there been some trouble at the bank? Have I forgotten to pay an important bill?”

“Hello, Uncle!” said the policeman. “My name’s Mark.”

Questions 16 to 18 are based on the passage you have just heard.

16. What does “He has not forgotten one of Mark’s seventeen birthdays” mean?

17. Why was the policeman standing there?

18. What can we say about Mr. Dodd?

Passage Two

Many people think that nothing happens when they sleep. Doctors have studied sleep for many years. They think that a lot happens when people sleep.

Doctors say that people have five kinds, or stages, of sleep. People may go through each stage about every 10 minutes.

During the first two stages, you sleep lightly. That is, if someone calls you or puts his hand on you, you wake up quickly. Your body rests quietly, you breathe more slowly than when you are awake. Your heart beats slowly.

During stages three and four, you sleep deeply. That is, if someone puts his hand on you, you don’t wake up. Your heart beats more slowly than that in stages one and two. You don’t hear sounds. Lights don’t wake you up.

The last stage of sleep is called REM (Rapid Eye Movement). During REM sleep you breathe faster, and your heart beats faster than that in stages one through four. Your eyes move under your eyelids. All of this happens because you are dreaming.

Doctors say that everyone dreams. Some dreams are short; some dreams are long. Some people are good at remembering their dreams; others forget theirs.

Questions 19 to 21 are based on the passage you have just heard.

19. What happens when you sleep?

20. During which stage of sleep do people dream?

21. What can we conclude about sleep stages?

Passage Three

Last summer I was working in Washington, D.C., as an intern at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. In one way it was an awful job because the purpose was to figure out ways to identify dead people, like identifying the remains of soldiers in wars, or bodies after disasters such as plane crashes or earthquakes. But the exciting part was that I was working with a scientist who heads a program that is identifying bodies by their DNA structures. As you know, DNA is the name for the genetic material in our bodies. In the past, all soldiers had to wear a necklace and a metal tag with their names and identification numbers on the tag. But this method of identification was not very accurate because the tags could be lost or switched around. So in my job I worked at helping the Institute to set up a DNA file to store the genetic information for new soldiers. The armed forces will get a blood sample from each person, and they’ll use the samples to create a DNA file for each person in the military. Then, if the body of a military person cannot be identified by its tag, fingerprints, or dental records, the body tissue can be analyzed and matched with DNA records at the Institute.

Questions 22 to 25 are based on the passage you have just heard.

22. Where did the woman work the previous summer?

23. What is the purpose of the program the woman is discussing?

24. For what did the speaker feel excited about her work?

25. In what class would the student most likely be making this presentation?

Section C

Directions: In this section, you will hear a passage three times. When the passage is read for the

first time you should listen for its general idea. Then listen to the passage again.

When the passage is read for the second time, you are required to fill in the blanks

numbered from 26 to 33 with the exact words you have just heard. For the blanks

numbered from 34 to 36 you are required to fill in the missing information. For

these blanks, you can either use the exact words you have just heard or write down

the main points in your own words. Finally, when the passage is read for the third

time, you should check what you have written.

The family of a Brazilian man killed by London police who mistook him for a suicide bomber says he was murdered, and that the police chief should resign.

The killing of 27-year-old Jean Charles de Menezes is becoming an international (26) incident, as the Brazilian government expresses its (27) outrage and his family demands the resignation of the London police chief.

London police shot and killed Mr. de Menezes on a subway car on July 22, (28) suspecting he was a suicide bomber.

The killing came just one day after four (29) unexploded bombs had been planted on London’s transport network, and two weeks after four suicide bombers had killed 52 London (30) commuters.

The de Menezes case took a new (31) twist this week when Britain’s ITV News received leaked material from an independent investigation. A photo of the corpse broadcast by the network appears to (32) contradict witness claims that Mr. de Menezes wore a heavy coat that could have (33) hidden a bomb.

Relatives of Mr. de Menezes want to know why police allowed a false version of events to stand for so long. They and their lawyers are demanding the resignation of London Police Commissioner Ian Blair, but he says he will not quit.

Mr. Blair has told British radio the de Menezes killing (34) must be viewed in light of the massive anti-terrorist operation that was under way.

(35) The commissioner denies there was a cover-up, but he says he felt the anti-terrorist operation deserved precedence.

Meanwhile, (36) Brazil says it is sending its own team of investigators to London next week to question police about the killing.
