When he was a child, he had received education in a private school for a period of time. But he had not taken much formal education, essentially studying by himself. By the age of 12, Dickens’s father was jailed because of the debt problem. Then he was sent to London as an apprentice in a shoeshine field, where he had to work for 10 hours a day. Maybe because of this experience, Dickens’s work focused more on the life of social labor people. His work is still popular now and has a great influence in English literature.
The hero of the novel is Oliver Twist who was an orphan. Everyday, he suffered from starvation and bully. At last, he can’t ignore the abuse of the boss, he escaped to London along. Then the story began. As soon as he reached London, he was noticed by a thief gang. The head of the gang tried to make Oliver work for him. One day, when Oliver and a member of this gang called Bates were walking in the street, Oliver was arrested by the police because of a misunderstanding that a
gentleman named Brownlow thought he had stolen his handkerchief. Infect Brownlow is one of his father’s friends. At last, he was set free until the owner of the bookshop proved that he was innocent. In the prison, he got badly hurt and Mr. Brownlow felt very guilty after he was set free. So Mr. Brownlow took him to his home to look after him. In Mr. Brownlow’s home, Oliver experienced the warm of the family. But this was not the end of pain. The head of the thief gang called Fagin. To ensure that Oliver wouldn’t leak their secret, Fagin let Nancy and Sikes to catch Oliver back. While Mr. Brown went out one day, Nancy and Sikes caught Oliver. To make Oliver work for him, Fagin beat him cruelly. One midnight, Fagin asked him to steal a big house. To tell the owner, Oliver went the house though the window. But unluckily, the steward thought he was a thief and shoot at him. The real thief ran away and Oliver was abandoned. With a hurt body, Oliver crawling in the snow, didn’t know the way, he came back to the house again. At last, the owner Merry and her adopted daughter Ross take him in and offer shelter for him. Coincidentally, Merry was his aunt and they don’t know
each other. One day, a person called Monks came to Fagin and told him that Oliver is his brother. His father left a large heritage and decided to give it to Oliver because of his unfilial unless Oliver was as unfilial as him that the heritage is given to Monks. To reach the goal, he let Fagin to help him to make Oliver an incurable criminal. While they were talking, Nancy heard it by accident, and he told it to Ross.
When Ross was thinking how to deal with it, Oliver came to tell her that he found Mr. Brownlow. Then Ross and Mr. Brownlow began to discuss it. They met Nancy once again and to Mr. Brownlow got a surprising new that Monks is his old friend’s son. So he decided to talk with Monks, but what they talks was heard by Fagin and Fagin killed Nancy cruelly. The death of Nancy made the thief gang came to an end. Fagin was arrested and died soon. Monks was caught by Mr. Brownlow and he told everything. With the truth came out Mr. Brownlow adopted Oliver.
In the book, Oliver, Nancy and Ross are the
represent of goodness. They all came from suffering, but they never loss themselves. In their heart,
goodness and trueness are still alive. No matter how hard it is and what a hard life, we should never lose ourselves.
Summary of Oliver Twist
Oliver Twist is born in a workhouse in a provincial town. His mother has been found very sick in the street, and she gives birth to Oliver just before she dies. Oliver is raised under the care of Mrs. Mann and the beadle Mr. Bumble in the workhouse. When it falls to Oliver’s lot to ask for more food on behalf of all the starving children in the workhouse, he is trashed, and then apprenticed to an undertaker, Mr. Sowerberry. Another apprentice of Mr. Sowerberry’s, Noah Claypole insults Oliver’s dead mother and the small and frail
Oliver attacks him. However, Oliver is punished severely, and he runs away to London. Here he is picked up by Jack Dawkins or the Artful Dodger as he is called. The Artful Dodger is a member of the Jew Fagin’s gang of boys. Fagin has trained the boys to become pickpockets. The Artful Dodger takes Oliver to Fagin’s den in the London slums, and Oliver, who innocently does not understand that he is among criminals, becomes one of Fagin’s boys.
When Oliver is sent out with The Artful Dodger and another boy on a pickpocket expedition Oliver is so shocked when he realizes what is going on that he and not the two other boys are caught. Fortunately, the victim of the thieves, the old benevolent gentleman, Mr. Brownlow rescues Oliver from arrest and brings him to his house, where the
housekeeper, Mrs. Bedwin nurses him back to life after he had fallen sick, and for the first
time in his life he is happy. However, with the help of the brutal murderer Bill Sikes and the prostitute Nancy Fagin kidnaps Oliver. Fagin is prompted to do this by the mysterious Mr. Monks. Oliver is taken along on a burglary expedition in the country. The thieves are discovered in the house of Mrs. Maylie and her adopted niece, Rose, and Oliver is shot and wounded. Sikes escapes. Rose and Mrs. Maylie nurse the wounded Oliver. When he tells them his story they believe him, and he settles with them. While living with Rose and Mrs. Maylie Oliver one day sees Fagin and Monks looking at him in through a window. Nancy discovers that Monks is plotting against Oliver for some reason, bribing Fagin to corrupt his innocence. Nancy also learns that there is some kind of connection between Rose and Oliver; but after having told Rose’s adviser and friend Dr. Losberne about it on the steps of London Bridge, she is discovered by Noah Claypole, who in the meantime has become a member of Fagin’s gang, and Sykes murders her. On his frantic flight away from the crime Sykes accidentally and dramatically hangs himself. Fagin and the rest of the gang are arrested. Fagin is executed after Oliver has visited him in the condemned cell in Newgate Prison. The Artful Dodger is transported after a court scene in which he eloquently defends himself and his class.
Monks’ plot against Oliver is disclosed by Mr. Brownlow. Monks is Oliver’s
half-brother seeking all of the inheritance for himself. Oliver’s father’s will states that he will leave money to Oliver on the condition that his reputation is clean. Oliver’s dead mother and Rose were sisters. Monks receives his share of the inheritance and goes away to America. He dies in prison there, and Oliver is adopted by Mr. Brownlow.
