第二部分(共两节,满分40分)

第一节阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中, 选出最佳选项。并在答题卡上将该选项涂黑

A

I recently turned fifty, which is young for a tree, midlife for an elephant, and ancient for a sportsman. Fifty is a nice number for the states in the US or for a national speed limit but it is not a number that I was prepared to have hung on me. Fifty is supposed to be my father’s age, but now I am stuck with this number and everything it means.

A few days ago, a friend tried to cheer me up by saying, “Fifty is what forty used to be.” He had made an inspirational point. Am I over the hill? People keep telling me that the hill has been moved, and I keep telling them that the high-jump bar has dropped from the six feet I

once easily cleared to the four feet that is impossible for me now.

“You are not getting older, you are getting better.” says Dr. Joyce Brothers. This, however, is the kind of doctor who inspires a second opinion.

And so,as I approach the day when I cannot even jump over the tennis net, I am moved to share some thoughts on aging with you. I am moved to show how aging feels to me physically and mentally. Getting older, of course, is obviously a better change than the one that brings you eulogies(悼词). In fact, a poet named Robert Browning considered it the best change of all:Grow old along with me!The best is yet to be.

Whether or not Browning was right, most of my first fifty years have been golden ones, so I will settle for what is ahead being as good as what has gone by. I find myself moving toward what is ahead with a curious blend (混合) of both fighting and accepting my aging, hoping that the philosopher (哲学家)was right when he said. “Old is always fifteen years from now.”

21. The author seems to tell us in Paragraph I that ______.

A. time alone will tell

B. time goes by quickly

C. time will show what is right

D. time makes one forget the past

22. When the author turned fifty, people around him ______.

A. tried to comfort him

B. got inspiration from him

C. were friendlier with him

D. found him more talkative

23. The author considers his fifty years of life______.

A. peaceful

B. ordinary

C. satisfactory

D. regretful

24. We can infer from the passage that ______.

A. the old should lead a simple life

B. the old should face the fact of aging

C. the old should take more exercise

D. the old should fill themselves with curiosity

Not all vegetables need lots of sunshine. Mark Hoffman and his wife, Guia, own a bed-and-breakfast guesthouse in rural Kempton, Illinois. They often serve their guests fresh vegetables from the garden.

The Hoffmans have been growing food and flowers for twenty-five years. For almost ten of those years, Mr. Hoffman has been experimenting and working with shade plantings. He says visitors to his website——often ask how to plant in shade spaces. He said, “The bottom line here is that most plants will produce more in full sun. But if you do not have full sun, there are other options.”

For example, he grows tomatoes near oak trees. Oak trees can produce a lot of shade. But Mr. Hoffman says his tomato plants grow as long as they get five hours a day of direct sunshine, especially morning sun. Not only does this go against the traditional advice that tomatoes need six, eight, even twelve hours a day of full sun, it also shows how plants and tree roots can share nutrients and water. Mr. Hoffman also plants asparagus around a tree at its drip line, the area below the outer limit of the branches. So when it rains, all the rain drips down right on the asparagus.

The Hoffmans’ website includes a list of vegetables, flowers and herbs that have produced acceptably for them in partial shade. Mr. Hoffman says plants with wider leaves seem to do better in shady environments. He also found that his potatoes did better in partial shade than

in full sun.

Moving them out of the sun helps control an insect problem with leaf hoppers. Mr. Hoffman does not use pesticides (农药). Instead, he plants the potatoes at the drip line, especially on the east side of the tree. The potatoes get morning sun, but they are shaded during the hottest part of the day. Leaf hoppers dislike shade, and the hottest part of the day is when they do the worst of their damage.

Time of day, brightness of the sun, shadows from trees, walls and buildings, these all influence how much sunlight falls or does not fall on plants. And extension agent Curtis Swift at Colorado State University says people interested in shade planting should also remember something else. The term “shade” can describe differen t amounts of darkness. He says it can even mean different things in different parts of the world.

28. What’s the author’s purpose of writing the passage?

A. T o show vegetables can be planted in the shade.

B. To recommend an approach to managing a website.

C. T o present a kind of eco-friendly lifestyle.

D. T o introduce Mark Hoffman and his family.

29. What can we infer from the second paragraph?

A. Food and flowers produce more in the shade.

B. Food growing in the shade contains more nutrients.

C. Sun can affect the production of some plants.

D. Food growing in the shade is the best choice for most plants.

30. By using asparagus as an example, the author wants to explain that______.

A. asparagus prefers to grow in the shade

B. how plants and tree roots share water

C. vegetables grow better in partial shade

D. how leaves gain sunshine under the tree

31.The underlined words “leaf hoppers” in Para five may be a kind of ______.

A. plans

B. pesticides

C. insects

D. potatoes

It is always the same minority of top pupils, usually sitting in the front, who raise their hands to answer questions, while the majority switch off. This deep-seated classroom habit is widening the achievement gap in our schools, according to the education expert Dylan William.

Some sort of randomization process is required, William long ago decided, and his unusual solution is to write the pupil’s names down on lollipop(棒棒糖)sticks, the teacher then pulling them at random from a pot. No one can hide---everyone is potentially in the firing line.

Over the course of one summer term, he put the idea into practice on a mixed-ability class of 12- to 13-year-olds at a school in Borehamwood. The aim was to involve every pupil in the lesson.

A further innovation---small, hand-held whiteboards for each student---came as a direct result of an unforeseen problem with the lollipop sticks.

Unable to show off their brilliance in the front of the class, the regular hands-up group were getting frustrated, and had even started to become disruptive(捣乱的). “The high-achieving girls were really struggling,” William says. “They’re used to putting their hands up only when they know the answer. The random lollipop method was putting some of the high achievers into the unacc ustomed position of sometimes not knowing the answer.”

“It’s kind of embarrassing, because I’ve got this reputation for being smart,” says Emily, after she has been caught out marking her disapproval by secretly removing her lollipop stick from the pot. Hence the mini-whiteboard.

“The idea with the mini-whiteboard is that the whole class writes their answers before displaying their boards to the teacher---and each other. You can get an overall view of what the whole class thinks,” William says.

“People are always pushing new technology and expensive ways of raising students’ achievement, but the fact is that this is something that every school could do,” he says.

32.Why did William decide to change the classroom habit?

A.To make the classes interesting.

B.To mobilize the whole class.

C.To pick out high achievers.

D.To relieve teachers’ stress.

33.What does William think of the use of lollipop sticks?

A.It will be popular with high achievers.

B.It is mainly intended for 12- to 13-year-olds.

C.It gives everyone the chance to make their voice heard.

D.It will greatly strengthen teacher-student relationships.

34.Why did Emily take out her lollipop stick?

A. T o leave a mark on it.

B. To show her smartness.

C. T o keep it as a souvenir.

D. T o avoid having her pride hurt.

35.What purpose does the mini-whiteboard serve?

A.To motivate students to learn better.

B.To strengthen the role of lollipop sticks.

C.To inspire teachers to use new tools.

D.To cover students’ shyness.

Dear Peter,

I’m writing to tell you something about e-hongbao, what is becoming popular in China.

E-hongbao is actually a kind of lucky money from and to relatives and friends during festivals or in special occasions. For many young people, grabbing e-hongbao on their mobile phones are a fairly common and excited activity. Unlike the tradition of elders give lucky money to children, over half of the people sending e-hongbao are in 20s. It’s just for a fun or giving best wishes, so the sum of money matters little. In a word, e-hongbao is bringing new color to the old tradition.

Therefore, I’m concerned about the safe of on-line payment. So rules and regulations needed to be improved regarding the e-hongbao system to guarantee its operation.

第二节:书面表达(满分25分)

Dear Jim,

I’m writing to tell you something about the new form of sharing bike --- mobike mentioned in your latest letter.

It’s very convenient to use if you ha ve a smart-phone. What you do is to find the nearest mobike through the APP, scan the QR code on the bike, and enjoy your pared to other forms of sharing bike, the greatest advantage of morbike is that you can easily find one and never worry about where to park it. It is becoming a new trend as a means of transportation, which relieves the traffic pressure and does good to the environment as well.

In my opinion, a sensible attitude should be held towards mobike. It is obviously helpful to us citizens, but it also brings some problems including random parking, vandalism and possession of shared bikes. Besides, its management is not perfect. Sometimes even kids can open the lock and ride the bicycle, and there is no doubt that such behaviour is very dangerous. As long as the government takes effective mesasures, mobike can be expected to play a constructive role in urban public transportation.

Hope to ride a mobike with you in China.

Yours,

Li Hua
