Long long ago, there was an old merchant who had three sons.“To which one shall I leave my fortune?”he wondered.“It must when you're lying on the white sands of the Mexican Rivier, the stresses(压力)of the world seem a million miles away. Hey, stop! This is no vacation—you have to finish something!

Here lies the problem for travel writer and food critic(评论家)Edie Jarolim. “I always loved traveling and always liked to eat, but it never occurred to me that I could make money doing both of those things,” Jarolim said. Now you can read her travel advice everywhere—in Arts and Antiques, in Brides, or in one of her three books.

Her job in travel writing began some eight years ago. After getting a PhD in English in Canada, she took a test for Frommer's travel guides, passed it, and got the job. After working at Frommer's, Jarolim worked for a while at Rough Guides in London, then Fodor's, where she fell so in love with a description of the Southwest of the U.S. that she moved there.

Now as a travel writer, she spends one-third of her year on the road. The rest of the time is spent completing her

tasks and writing reviews of restaurants at home in Tucson, Arigona. As adventurous as the job sounds, the hard part is fact-checking all the information. Sure, it's great to write about

a tourist attraction, but you'd better get the local(当地的)museum hours correct or you could really ruin someone's vacation.

1.Which country does Jarolim live in now? A.Mexico. B.The U.S.. C.The U.K.. D.Canada. 2.What is most difficult for Jarolim?

A.Working in different places to collect information.B.Checking all the facts to be written in the guides. C.Finishing her work as soon as possible.D.Passing a test to write travel guides. 3.What would be the best title for the text?

Should melamine (三聚氰胺) be allowed in our milk? The issue gradually became clear after debates heated up. However, all of a sudden, it became a worry again.

In an announcement of six national departments in October, including the Ministry of Public Health and Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, a small dose (剂量) of melamine in the milk and dairy products is allowed. For example, 1 mg/kg is OK for powdered milk (奶粉) for infants (婴儿) and maximum of 2.5 mg/kg acceptable for other powdered milk and dairy products.

The public health officials and experts said that zero tolerance of melamine is impossible because food has to be packed. A small portion of melamine comes along with the packing materials.

Most of the consumers believe that “melamine free” is one of the most important standards for qualified safe milk and dairy products. The test results showed the products with “no melamine” tags (标签) and those with that chemical on the blacklist (黑名单). Didn’t they mean that some companies can produce milk without

melamine? Then why are 1 mg and 2.5 mg of melamine acceptable for our milk and dairy products? It means that now melamine has gained new access to our milk and dairy products.

Consumers have a right to say NO to it altogether.

The other day when I was passing a clothing store, I fell in love with a skirt. I knew it would suit me best at first sight. But when I looked at the price tag (标签), I knew I had to give it up.

The love for beautiful clothes has been planted in my heart the day when I was born to be a woman. Several years ago I read an article in a magazine. The article stated that when a woman is at her best time, she is usually poor or tasteless, so she can’t get the right clothes; when she can afford to buy the clothes she likes, she often finds that they do not suit her anymore.

On the way home, I was quite disturbed by such thoughts. It was just a pity, like many other pities. I thought to myself this way. But when I was about to enter the building where I was living, I saw the big mirror placed in the entrance. I saw a girl in it who was in cheap but cleanly washed sweater and jeans. She was rather young, healthy and energetic. For quite a while I was touched by what I had seen in the mirror.

Then I almost forgot the tale: A person without shoes cried until he saw a man without feet. Being young without good clothes is like the person without shoes. I should have felt grateful that I haven’t lost my feet. 8 How did the author feel when she decided not to buy the skirt? A. Embarrassed. B. Wise. C. Regretful. D. Relieved. 9. The underlined word “She” in Paragraph 3 refers to . A. the author’s friend B. a stranger C. the author’s roommate D. the author

10. Why was the author touched by what she saw in the mirror? A. She came to realize what she really possessed. B. She was reminded of her devotion to beauty.

C. She didn’t feel at ease when looking into a mirror. D. She never thought over the other side of a person. 五.单词拼写(每题1分,共15分)
