When a rare disease ALD threatened to kill the four-year-old boy Lorenzo, his parents refused to give up hope. Doctors explained that there was no cure for ALD, and that he would probably die within three years. But Lorenzo’s parents set out to prove the doctors wrong.

The parents devoted themselves to keeping their son alive and searching for a cure. But the doctors and the families of other ALD patients often refused to take them seriously. They thought the efforts to find a cure were a waste of time, and drug companies weren’t interested in supporting research into such a rare disease.

However, the parents still refused to give up and spent every available hour in medical libraries and talking to anyone who would help. Through trial and error (反复试验), they finally created a cure from ingredients (调料) commonly found in the kitchen. The cure, named ―Lorenzo’s Oil‖, saved the boy’s life. Despite the good results, scientists and doctors remained unconvinced. They said there was no real evidence that the oil worked and that the treatment was just a theory. As a result, some families with ALD children were reluctant to try it.

Finally, the boy’s father organized an international study to test the oil. After ten years of trials, the answer is: the oil keeps ALD children healthy.

Task 2

Directions: This task is the same as Task 1. The 5 questions or unfinished statements are numbered 41

through 45.

Do you know how to use a mobile phone(手机) without being rude to the people around you?

Talking during a performance irritates(激怒) people. If you are expecting an emergency call, sit near the exit doors and set your phone to vibrate(振动). When you mobile phone vibrates, you can leave quietly and let the other enjoy the performance.

Think twice before using mobile phones in elevators, museums, churches or other indoor public places—especially enclosed spaces. Would you want to listen to someone’s conversation in these places? Worse yet, how would you feel if a mobile phone rang suddenly during a funeral! It happens more often than you think. Avoid these embarrassing situations by masking sure your mobile phone is switched off.

When eating at a restaurant with friends, don’t place your mobile phone on the table. This conveys the message that your phone calls are more important than those around you.

Mobile phones have sensitive microphones that allow you to speak at the volume you would on a regular phone. This enables you to speak quietly so that others won’t hear the details of your conversations. If you are calling from a noisy area, use your hand to direct your voice into the microphone.

Many people believe that they can’t live without their mobile phone. Owning a mobile phone definitely makes life more convenient, but limit your conversations to urgent ones and save the personal calls until you are at home.

41. What should you do when you need to answer a phone call during a performance? A. Call back after the performance. B. Answer it near the exit door. C. Talk outside the exit door. D. Speak in a low voice.

43. When you are calling in a noisy area, you are advised to _______. A. use a more sensitive microphone B. shout loudly into your microphone

C. go away quietly to continue the phone call D. use your hand to help speak into the phone

44. The author implies that the use of mobile phones in such places as museums should be ____. A. limited B. expected C. discouraged D. recommended 45. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A. You should limit your mobile phone calls to personal affairs. B. You should speak quietly into your phone while in a church. C. You are supposed to turn off your mobile phone at a funeral. D. You are supposed to use your mobile phone as much as possible.

The Practical Everyday English series consists of a collection of words and expressions used every day by all classes of a society. The idea is that after being presented with a word or expression the reader can see how it is used by reading two or three which have been studied on earlier pages.

The human body has developed its millions of nerves to be highly aware of what goes on both inside and outside of it. This helps us adjust to the outside world. Without our nerves and our brain, which is system of nerves, we couldn’t know what’s happening. But we pay for our sensitivity. We can feel pain when the slightest thing is wrong with any part of our body. The history of torture (折磨) is based on the human body being open to pain.

But there is a way to handle pain. Look at the Indian fakir (苦行僧) who sits on a bed of nails. Fakirs can put a needle right through an arm, and feel no pain. This ability that some humans have developed to handle pain should give us ideas about how the mind can deal with pain.

The big thing in withstanding pain is our attitude toward it. If the dentist says, “This will hurt a little,” it helps us to accept the pain. By staying relaxed, and by treating the pain as an interesting sensation (感觉) , we can handle the pain without falling apart. After all, although pain is an unpleasant sensation, it is still a sensation, and sensations are the stuff of life.

Most of us grow up taking certain things for granted. We tend to assume that experts and religious

leaders tell us the ―truth‖. We tend to believe that things advertised on television or in newspaper can’t be bad for us.

However, encouragement of critical thinking in students is one of the goals of most colleges and

universities. Few professors require that students to share professors’ own beliefs. In general, professors are more concerned that students learn to question and critically examine the arguments of others, including some of their own beliefs or values. This does not mean that professors insist that you change your beliefs, either. It does mean, however, professors will usually ask you to support the views you express in class or in your writing.

If your premises(前提) are shaky, or if your arguments are not logical, professors personally point out the false reasoning in your arguments. Most professors want you to learn to recognize the premises of your arguments, to examine whether you really accept these premises, and to understand whether or not you draw logical conclusions. Put it this way: professors don’t tell you what to think; they try to teach you how to think.

On the other hand, if you intend to disagree with your professors in class, you should be prepared to offer a strong argument in support of your ideas. Arguing just for the sake of arguing usually does not

promote a critical examination of ideas. Many professors interpret it as rudeness.

36. In the first paragraph, the writer tries to tell us that people ______ A. easily accept certain things without a second thought B. grow up through learning certain things in life C. are forming their views during their growth

D. have strong beliefs in authorities while getting old

37. Nowadays, most colleges and universities encourage students to______. A. criticize others

B. share professors’ beliefs C. give their own ideas

D. change their own beliefs

38. The word ―shaky‖ (Line 1, Para.3) most probably means‖ ______‖ A. creative B. firm C. false D. weak

39. To help students develop their critical thinking, professors mainly teach them______. A. choices of their premises B. the way to think independently C. skills of drawing conclusions D. different kinds of argument

40. According to the writer, the right way to argue is to ______. A. argue mainly for the sake of arguing B. prove it with a good conclusion

C. support your idea with sound reasoning D. examine others’ ideas critically

Task 2

Directions: This task is the same as Task 1. The 5 questions or unfinished statements are numbered 41

through 45.

Human cloning (克隆) technology could be used to reverse heart attacks. Scientists believe that they may be able to treat heart attack victims by cloning their healthy heart cells and injecting them into the areas of the heart that have been damaged, and other problems may be solved if human cloning and its technology are not forbidden.

With cloning, infertile couples could have children. Current treatments for infertility, in terms of percentages (百分比) are not very successful. Couples go through physically and emotionally painful procedures for a small chance of having children. Many couples run out of time and money without

successfully having children. Human cloning could make it possible for many more infertile couples to have children than ever before.

We should be able to clone the bone marrow (骨髓) for children and adults suffering from leukemia(白血病). This is expected to be one of the first benefits to come from cloning technology.

We may learn how to switch cells on and off through cloning and thus able to cure cancer. Cloning technology can be used to test for and perhaps cure gene-related diseases.

The above is just a few examples of what human cloning technology can do for humankind. This new technology promises unprecedented advancement in medicine if people will release their fears and let the benefits begin.

41. Heart attacks can be treated with human cloning technology by ______. A. removing the damaged part of the heart B. replacing the old heart with a cloned one

C. repairing the heart with cells cloned from healthy ones D. giving the patients injections of various medicines

42. The word ―infertile‖ (Line 1, Para.2) most probably means‖ ______‖ A. unable to give birth to a child
