Have you ever heard of Angel Falls? It's the highest waterfall in the world, deep in the jungles of Venezuela. Few people have ever seen Angel Falls. It's very hard to get there. If you went by land, you would have to travel for weeks through thick jungles. If you went by plane from Caracas, a city on the northern coast, it would take about four hours.

What would it be like to take a trip by plane from Caracas to the falls? For hundreds of miles you would fly southeast over green plains. Then the land would become higher and you see mountains with forests. Soon the land would level out to high plateaus(高原). Finally, you would fly toward a deep valley steep, rocky sides.

Suddenly you would see a silver thread in the distance. Then as your plane flew closer, you

B Gene technology to benefit people Among all the fast growing science and technology, the research of human genes, or biological engineering as people call it, is drawing more and more attention now. Sometimes it is a hot topic discussed by people.

The greatest thing that gene technology can do is to cure serious diseases that doctors at present can almost do nothing with, such as cancer and heart disease. Every year, millions of people are murdered by these two killers. And to date, doctors have not found an effective way to cure them. But if the gene technology is applied, not only these two diseases can be cured completely, bringing happiness and more living days to the patients, but also the great amount of money people spend on curing their diseases can be saved, therefore it benefits the economy as well. In addition, human life span(寿命) can be prolonged.

Gene technology can help people to give birth to more healthy and clever children. Some families, with the English imperial family being a good example, have hereditary diseases. This means their children will for sure have the family disease, which is a great trouble for these families. In the past, doctors could do nothing about hereditary diseases. But gene technology

can solve this problem perfectly. The scientist just need to find the wrong gene and correct it, and a healthy child will be born.

Some people are worrying that the gene research can be used to manufacture human beings in large quantities. In the past few years, scientists have succeeded in cloning a sheep, therefore these people predict that human babies would soon be cloned. But I believe cloned babies will not come out in large quantities, for most couples in the world can have babies in a very normal way. Of course, the governments must take care to control gene technology. 60. What does \ A.gene technology and another treatment of the two diseases. B.The two murderers who killed the cloned baby C.The two diseases of cancer and heart disease D.Hereditary diseases and cancer

61.What's the main idea of the third paragraph?

A.How gene technology can be applied in the field of treating hereditary diseases. B.Gene technology can be used to clone human babies. C.Gene technology can help people to give birth to a baby. D.Gene technology can help the English imperial family out

62.In what way gene technology can help to treat hereditary diseases?

A.Using gene technology, people with hereditary diseases can have more living days.

B.Using gene technology, scientist finds the wrong gene and corrects it. C.Using gene technology, human babies can be cloned.

D.Doctors can cure cancer and heart disease with the help of gene technology. 63.What is the main purpose of writing this passage?

A.Expressing the writer's idea that gene technology will benefit people B.Telling people the advantages of gene technology

C.Telling the readers that gene technology will not benefit people D. Explaining that gene technology will also do harm to the humanity C

Since the beginning of time, man has been interested in the moon. The Romans designed a special day to show admiration and respect to the moon. They called it ―Moonday‖, or ―Monday‖, as we know it today. Later, the great mind of Leonardo da Vinci studied the moon and designed a machine to carry a human to the moon. Leonardo said that one day a great machine bird would take a person to the moon and bring great honour to the home where it was born.

Four and a half centuries later, Leonardo’s idea was realized. Apollo 11 took three Americans Collins, Aldrin, and Armstrong to the moon. The mission (任务) did fill the whole world with great surprise, as Leonardo had said it would. Numerous essays, articles, and books were written about man’s first moon mission. But perhaps the most interesting story was one written before

the event over 100 years before.

In 1865, French author Jules Verne wrote a story about the first journey to the moon. His story was very similar to the 1969 Apollo 11 mission.

Verne’s spacecraft also contained three men—two Americans and a Frenchman. The spacecraft was described as being almost the same size as Apollo 11. The launch(发射) site in Verne’s story was also in Florida. The spacecraft in Verne’s story was named the ―Columbiad‖. The Apollo 11 command ship was called ―Columbia‖. His account of sending the spacecraft into the space could easily have been written about how Apollo 11 was sent into the space.

Verne’s story was the same as the actual event in several other respects(方面). The speed of Verne’s spacecraft was 36,000 feet per second; Apollo’s was 35,533 feet per second. Verne’s spacecraft took 97 hours to reach the moon; Apollo’s time was 103 hours. Like Apollo’s spacemen, Verne’s spacemen took pictures of the moon’s surface, relaxed on their seats, cooked with gas, and experienced weightlessness. They too came down in the Pacific and were picked up by an American warship.

What were the reasons for Jules Verne’s extreme accuracy(精确) in describing an event 100 years or more before it actually occurred? He based his writings on the laws of physics and astronomy in the nineteenth century .Science and the vivid Verne’s imagination gave people an unbelievably accurate preview of one of the greatest events of the 20th century. 64. Jules Verne wrote his story of a man’s visit to the moon about _______. A. 100 years before the Apollo 11 mission B. 10 years before the Apollo 11 mission C. four and one half centuries ago D. 100 years ago

65. Verne’s story about the first journey to the moon is very similar to _______. A. the second U. S. space mission B. the Apollo 11 mission C. Leonardo da Vinci’s story

D. numerous other books on the same subject 66. The passage suggests that Jules Verne _______. A. developed the laws of physics

B. based his writings on the works of Leonardo da Vinci C. was very lucky in what he had described about the future D. knew a great deal about the laws of physics and astronomy 67. The passage mainly describes _______. A. the rapid progress of mankind

B. Verne’s accurate preview of the future C. the 1969 Apollo 11 moon mission

D. the 19th-century science and technology

people than in societies where people are similar in many ways. The simple reason for this is that there are more different ways of looking at things present in the first kind of society. There are more ideas, more disagreements in interest, and more groups and organizations with different beliefs. In addition, there is usually a greater worldly interest and greater tolerance(宽容) in mixed societies. All these factors tend to promote(促进) social changes by opening more areas of life to decision. In a society where people are quite similar in many ways, there are fewer occasions for people to see the need or the opportunity for change because everything seems to be the same. And although conditions may not be satisfactory, they are at least customary and undisputed(无异议的).

Within a society, social change is also likely to occur more frequently and more readily in the material aspects(方面) of the culture than in the non-material, for example, in technology rather than in values; in what has been learned later in life rather than what was learned early, in the less basic and less emotional aspects of society rather than in their opposites; in the simple elements(要素) rather than in the complex ones; and in elements that are acceptable to the culture rather than in strange elements.

72. The passage is mainly discussing________

A. two different societies

B. the necessity of social change

C. certain factors that cause social changes to occur D. the way that social changes occur

73. ________ is one of the factors that tend to promote social change.

A. Common interest

B. Less emotional people C. Advanced technology D. Different points of view

74. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?

A. Social change tends to meet with more difficulty in basic and emotional aspects of society.

B. Less disagreement with conditions tends to slow down social change. C. Social change is more likely to occur in the material aspect of society.

D. Society change is likely to occur in what people learned when they were young.

75.Social change is less likely to occur in a society where people are quite similar in many ways because_________ .

A people there have got used to their conditions and they seldom think it necessary to change B. people there have the same needs that can be satisfied without much difficulty C. people there are easy to please D. people there like to dispute 五. 单词拼写(10分)
