When skateboarding started in the 1960s, skateboards were made of wood and had clay wheels. Since the wheels did not grip concrete(混凝土) well, riders could do very few tricks with them. Soon people lost interest in the sport.
In 1973, though, a new wheel was invented in California. It was made of a plastic called urethane (氨基甲酸酯). A skateboard with these wheels moved very quickly and it also gripped the concrete well.
During the next few years skateboards were further improved. The urethane was perfected, and because the boards were shaped better, riders liked them better. These skateboards gave new life to skateboarding.
The streets were not safe for skateboarding, although it was easy to ride on the streets. As a result, skateboard parks sprang up. The first parks appeared in
California and Florida. At first there were only outdoor parks that had concrete slopes with small curves (曲线). Then more exciting parks appeared which had steep downward slopes, banked curves, and vertical (垂直的) walls. Today, there are both indoor and outdoor parks.
In most of these parks riders must wear helmets as well as knee and elbow pads. This gear can prevent a fall from causing serious injury.
Whenever they ride, people should always use this safety equipment, and they should learn how to fall safely. Many accidents happen during the first week of riding so it is very important that riders be taught well. 46. Why were the new skateboards more popular? A. They were safer than the older ones. B. The older models were expensive.
C. They were stronger than the older ones. D. People could do more tricks with them.
47. The underlined word “grip” in the first paragraph means “________”. A. move over a surface without slipping B. stick to C. replace D. break down
48. Skateboard parks developed because ________. A. parents decided it would be a good idea B. too many accidents happened on the streets C. many streets did not allow skateboarding D. most city parks did not allow skateboarding
49. Which of the following statements about skateboard parks is TRUE? A. The first parks appeared in Scotland and Florida. B. The earlier parks had steep slopes.
C. In the parks people don't have to wear helmets. D. At first there weren't any indoor parks.
50. The most important rule in a skateboard park might be “________” A. Do not speed! B. Leave the park by 7 p.m.
C. Take care of your personal things! D. Wear safety equipment.

VII. 写作(Writing)
A) One possible version: Dear Sir / Madam,
In response to your request for information about Weightaway tablets, I am writing to tell you about my experience.
I am always looking for ways to lose weight and the advertisement for Weightaway made it sound ideal for me. So I tried the tablets.
So far, however, I seem to have lost no weight at all. After I take the tablet with my breakfast I feel sick for the rest of the morning. This certainly reduces my appetite, but I consider it a very unpleasant effect. Besides, in the evening I am very hungry and sometimes eat even more than usual. As for exercise, the tablets make me too tired to move at all.
I have nearly finished the tablets I bought and I think I am even more overweight than before. I strongly advise your readers not to waste their money on this product. Yours faithfully, Zhang B) One possible version:
This report is about the living conditions of elderly people in my town.
Many elderly people live alone or in special retirement homes because they prefer to be independent and do not want to cause problems to their families. This may also be because their children have small houses and don't have enough room for them.
Although many elderly people prefer to live alone, this is often inconvenient. For example, it may be difficult for them to
go upstairs. They may also be lonely. On the other hand, if they live in a retirement home, they may not be free to do the things they want to.
I have three suggestions as follows:
1. The living conditions should be suitable for elderly people. 2. There should be regular visits to those living alone. 3. Those living with others need to have some privacy.

10. I'm trying to study. Could you turn the music down, please?
Part III. Dialogues
A) Listen to the following mini-dialogues and choose the best answer or picture to each question. Each dialogue and question will be read twice.
11. W: Good afternoon. Palm Beach Hotel. Can I help you? M: Hello. I'd like to book a room with a beautiful view.
W: All our rooms have beautiful views, sir. The hotel is on the beach. There are palm trees, sandy beaches and little fishing boats.
Q: Which is NOT mentioned in this dialogue?
12. W: Today is Tom's last day at work. He doesn't want to stop working but he's sixty-five next month. M: How long has he been with the company? W: All his working life. I really admire him. Q: What will take place next month?
13. W: You couldn't help me carry these things to my car, could you?
M: Listen, I would, but I've got a backache. I'm not allowed to lift anything. W: Oh, I see. I'll ask my brother Jim. Q: What does the man mean?
14. W: The 16:45 service to Oxford will be delayed for up to half an hour. M: Oh, that's really typical! We're so lucky, uh?
W: Yeah, but anyway, we have time to eat before we leave. Q: When will the train for Oxford start?
15. W: Jerry, go and talk to Annie. She's in the kitchen. M: I haven't got anything to say to her.
W: Of course you have! You always have lots to say. Go and talk about food or sports. Q: What does the woman suggest the man talk about?
B) Listen to the following dialogue. According to the dialogue choose the best answer to each given question. The dialogue will be read twice.
W: Welcome Matthew. Let's start. I've learnt you invented a game, didn't you?
M: I invented a mini-baseball game a few years ago, and it's become very popular. I'm fourteen now, but I had the idea when I was ten.
W: It's made and sold by a small American company, isn't it?
M: That's right, but when I first tried to find a company to make the game, I failed. Some companies didn't reply and the ones who did reply just thought it was a joke because I was a child. W: What did you do then?
M: When I couldn't get a company to help, my dad went to the bank, but they wouldn't lend us the money. My parents have a friend who's a really good businessman, and he helped us to make a business plan. Because my grandmother and my great aunt are quite rich, they were happy to lend us enough money to make the first thousand games. After that, we persuaded a company to make the game for us. W: So have you got any more ideas?
M: Yes, I've got an idea for a game for younger children. I was watching my sisters playing one day and I got the idea from them. I visited different schools and asked the children what they enjoyed and tried out my ideas on them. W: So it's for younger children?
M: Yes. The toy company did some research, and found out that between the ages of five and six, children are interested in animals, colour, and food—things to do with their own lives. By the time they're eight, they like the opposite—they prefer games where they can invent things and are more imaginative. Then, between ten and twelve, they enjoy games based on knowledge—quizzes and things like that.
Part IV. Passages Passage A
Listen to the following material and choose the best answer to each question. The material will be read twice.
W: Good morning everyone. I'm your tour guide for today. We've made a change to the trip we usually make on Thursdays. We're still going to visit the beautiful town of Brampton with its old university. But today, because we have a lot of children here this week, we're also going to a wildlife park.
On the way to Brampton, we'll drive through some beautiful countryside. We'll go over the mountain and we'll have a lovely view of the lake from the top. We'll stop there for a few minutes so you can take some photos. In the next valley, we'll have a break for coffee. There's a cafe near a beautiful waterfall.
We'll get to Brampton at about eleven thirty. It's a lovely town. We'll start by taking a guided tour of the university, which was built in the seventeenth century. Then you can have a look at the shops. Most people come to Brampton nowadays for the shops, but it's the university that made the town famous. If you don't want to look at the shops, I suggest you visit the museum. After lunch, we'll get back on the coach and go to the wildlife park. We need to stay in the coach while we drive round because we'll see some lions in the park. Keep an eye on your children—the animals sometimes hide in the trees. Some friends of mine have seen some tigers, but I've never seen any. I'm afraid they no longer have monkeys, but you may see some giraffes.
We'll leave the wildlife park at half past five. The journey back takes about an hour and a quarter, so we'll return to the hotel at a quarter to seven. There'll just be time for you to change before dinner at a quarter past seven... Passage B
Listen to the following material and fill in the missing information in the numbered spaces. The material will be read twice. M: The last thing today on our holiday programme is some information about cycling holidays. They're run by Pathway Holidays, and the next one is from Monday 12th of June until Saturday 17th of June. On this trip, you cycle from Whitehaven in the northwest of England to Sunderland in the northeast. On most days, you cycle around 40 kms, the maximum on any day being 50 kms, so over the whole trip you'll cycle about 210 kms.
The trip is through beautiful countryside. The routes are planned so that you don't have to ride up too many hills. The steepest part is near the end when you get to the highest point of the ride. This is known as Black Hill because of the colour of the rock. After that, it's downhill to the North Sea.
The total cost of the tour is £652 and that includes your hotel, all meals, the transportation of your luggage and a guide. This is someone who knows the area and can tell you about it on the route. In fact, the price
includes everything except hiring a bicycle. It's possible to hire a bicycle and you should book one in advance if you want to do that, but they recommend bringing your own bicycle. It's often more comfortable to ride one that you are used to.
Entertainment is provided in the first hotel in Whitehaven—there'll be a musical evening. On Wednesday evening, the hotel you're staying in will organise a quiz, and on Friday evening there'll be a party.
If you'd like more information about the trip, the company advises you to look at their website, and I'll tell you what that is in a minute.
