Gulliver's Travels

I read Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift this summer holiday. There are 4 parts in the book: A voyage to Lilliput, A voyage to Brobdingnag, A Voyage to Laputa, Balnibarbi, Luggnagg, Glubbdubdrib, and Japan, andA Voyage to the Country of the Houyhnhnms. It’s about Lemuel Gulliver the surgeon’s magical travels. All of

them are factious but it does satirize the scientists, political parties and the bad habits of people.

The most interesting part I think is the story about the institute in Luggnagg where the scientists were trying to get sunlight from cucumbers, to recover food from dirt, to build house from top to bottom, to recognize colours with nose, to plough with pigs andto change the cobweb’s colour by feeding the spiders with some colourful food. I think they are stupid and useless. The scientists in the real world were also doing such things when Swift wrote this book. Who wants to eat food that used to be dirt!

From this book, I have learned that the Britain government was in a mess and people who had got money would also get the power so they worked for money but not for the truth a couple of months ago when Swift was writing the book. People were selfish, shameless andlascivious like Yahoos in the country of Houyhnhnms, while the houyhnhnms were noble, honest and kind. We need to learn from them.
