Always on the bright side

To smile or to cry are typical reactions to a situation like the one illustrated in the picture: a bottle of milk is dropped and only half is left; one chooses to cry over the loss, while the other smiles, feeling lucky he still has half of the milk left!

Similar circumstances happen in our lives. When we encounter trials, it is always important for an enterprising mind to remember that hope remains, and that smiling is the best policy! In science, for instance, not a single great discovery has been made without overcoming numerous setbacks and failures. Madam Curie spent over twenty years fighting through failures and frustrations. If she had given up even once, she would not have discovered Radium. This is the same with other great innovators!

Never tire, never yield, and never give up! When one encounters hardship, remember what they say: “when God shuts a door, he will also open a window for you.” Life is full of ups and downs, and optimism, rather than pessimism, is the best policy.

What an impressive picture it is!Two young men sitting on a boat are throwing rubbish into a lake, with all kinds of garbage floating on the surface. What is conveyed in the picture is both realistic and thought-provoking.

Clearly, the intent of the picture is to communicate to a viewer that with rapid economic development, the environment is being tremendously polluted despite the fact that tourism brings China many benefits. In public places, people have no awareness that their actions can damage the environment, the only environment we have. They can often cause inconvenience and discomfort to other tourists, and also degrade China's image as a nation.

What can we do about this situation?First,I think that the government should enact more severe regulations, punishing any behavior that damages the environment. Second, the government should make the public more aware of environment protection. People should know how closely the environment is related to their personal lives. Let's hope we will have a cleaner and more beautiful world in the near future.

Concerns about multicultural issues have been brought up recently in the general public, and even experts and scholars in academic circles. Just as what is described by the cartoon, a huge hot pot contains quite a large variety of “ingredients:” Chinese Kung-fu, Post-modernization, the Peking Opera, Enlightenment, Lao She (a famous Chinese writer),Shakespeare, and so on.

These “ingredients”—whether modern or ancient, at home or abroad—obviously symbolize the various kinds of cultures which we can “taste”anywhere and at anytime.

This social phenomenon illustrated by the cartoon is obviously depicting the result of globalization and China’s policy of opening up to the outside world. Now almost everyone in this world, in a sense, is exposed to a huge amount of information, including various cultures in different nations. According to a recent survey made by NOB, a polling organization in Shanghai, about 92% of foreigners in China say that they love traditional Chinese culture and that 84% of young people, especially those in colleges and universities, say that they celebrate Christmas and Valentine’s Day, both important Western holidays. These trends lea d to convincing views that globalization can promote cultural exchange. We are lucky to live in this perse world of innumerable cultures, just like the cultural “hot pot.”

Accordingly, we may predict that with the further development of society, the blending of various cultures will become even more obvious. And as global villagers, we can enjoy more access to the world’s perse cultures in the near future.

As is vividly depicted in the drawing provided, many people are sitting in front of computers and in narrow spaces, exchanging their views with each other through the internet. The drawing is impressive in its ability to describe people?s addiction to the internet. The artist?s intention is self-evident and the meaning is quite thought-provoking.

It seems true that the cartoon is indicative of a pervasive societal problem with regard to the internet. I ts great impacts and benefits can?t be overstated. It is the internet that causes our big world to become a global village. However, as a growing number of inpiduals have become addicted to using the internet, many have forgotten all about real life, and the important aspects of society they are neglecting. As a consequence, many close their doors and remain indoors after they return home from work, and are reluctant to have any face-to-face connections unless done wi th other folks online. What?s worse, these types of people often become indifferent to their friends, neighbors, and even relatives.

This phenomenon is harmful to us and our community alike. As the pressure in life and work increases, we should learn to f ind proper ways to relieve it. It?s time that we took some measures to improve the situation: people can be organized to hold activities together to develop social and constructive hobbies. Consequently, we must make full use of the internet to enable us to make our daily lives both joyful and meaningful.

The picture presents a touching sight to us. Two handicapped men are walking quite quickly by binding their disabled legs together and holding fast to each other?s shoulders, crutches unused and left behind. They deserve our total respect! They have overcome their own physical deficiencies and ingeniously devised a smoother and easier way of moving by drawing strength and support from each other. This is the definition of the word …cooperation.?

In modern times, cooperation has become an efficient and effective way to solve many problems. To begin with, cooperation can increase our strength so as to accomplish things that would be impossible with one person. We all have inpidual limitations, and with the fast development of science and technology we are facing a world that is growing ever more sophisticated. Therefore, we often need to combine abilities and resources to be competitive and gain success. What’s more, cooperation is not the simple addition of strength, but can be considered a fusion of all partners’strengths. Making use of different members’strengths - and thereby offsetting each one?s weaknesses - and by providing mutual support and sharing resources with each other, we can then attain a capacity that is much more than the sum of all the inpiduals? contributions.

All in all, we will be able to more widely explore our world, and reach further than is possible as inpiduals, by cooperation with each other.

Here is a picture of a football match in which a goalkeeper is defending his team?s goal, while an opposing player is trying to kick the ball into it. The goalkeeper must be thinking “This goal seems so wide! How can I defend it?” while the opposi ng player is probably thinking the exact opposite: “The goalkeeper is so big! How can I possibly kick it in?”

Obviously, as is shown in the cartoon, neither of them have very much confidence, and if you don?t have confidence, how can you expect to achieve your life goals?! Losing one?s self-confidence before undertaking tasks not only affects your thoughts but also does harm to the actions you will take.

For example, when I was in middle school, our school basketball team once played against another team from a very famous in our city, and everyone on our team felt that the only possible outcome of the competition was a loss for our team. As a result, we didn?t even make any specific preparations for the game beforehand. Of course, the result was a total loss. One year later, we met the same team again in a match. This time, our coach inspired us with a rousing speech that filled us with confidence and hope. We then made a detailed plan and practiced relentlessly before the game, and in the end we actually won. Our conclusion was that “Confidence is the first step to success!”

From them, we can vividly sense the enthusiasm of athletic hero worship, which is an ever more ordinary phenomenon in modern spectator sport society. As a matter of fact, with mass media and globalism fast developing, this type of hero worship has an increasingly larger scope. People from all walks of life, regardless of their background in success or popularity, may be admired and followed by others.

Hero worship like this is not absolutely right or wrong. It depends on what the worshipper does to follow or lionize his idol. If handled appropriately, hero worship may inspire and drive us, increasing our passion for life, motivation for work and even heighten our noblest values. Learning from our idols, we can gain enlightenment, encouragement and the qualities useful in striving for a career. By loving and following them, we can add color to our lives and explore a larger range of social experiences.

But as everything has its limits, hero worship will bring adverse effects to our lives if we go beyond proper control. If we over-indulge in the worship of our athletic idols, we may lose touch with ourselves and lose our way; what will be the meaning of our personal lives be then?

Therefore, the key lies in whether we can maintain our independence and inpiduality through balancing our perspective and passion toward our idols. It is up to us to live in the shadow or the sunshine of the heroes we admire.

The picture symbolically depicts how three sons and a daughter treat their old, helpless father. Each child stands in a different corner of a football field, in the middle of which is the old man, who is crouching. The eldest son kicks the father out and the other children are likewise prepared to ward him off. It is sad to see that none o f the old man?s children are willing to receive their father.

The picture is thought provoking, and illustrates a common phenomenon in today?s society: many grown children refuse to support their aging parents. They regard them as a burden even though it is a culturally-expected duty to support parents when they grow old. I think these children have 中公考研,让考研变得简单!查看更多考研英语辅导资料

It is no doubt that this phenomenon is becoming more and more common in modern society, but it is not a good trend for young people to follow. Most parents devote all their lives to raise their children and support them through schooling and life until they are independent adults. They give their children everything they have because of their love and hope for their futures. It is against nature for us to shirk the responsibility of caring for our parents when they are old. Rather, we have the duty to pay back their love by making their later years comfortable, enjoyable and happy.

In the picture presented to us, we can observe a boy running on an annular track and reaching the finish line. Despite sweating heavily because of his exertions, a happy smile hangs on his lips. However, as an arrow marked “End” points to the finishing line, there is also another arrow marked “Beginning.”

Though this picture only displays a runner who is going to start a new run after reaching the finish line, yet it also demonstrates a universal law that governs the development of mankind. In other words, if we want to make constant progress we must keep forging ahead instead of pausing and resting on our laurels. Robertson once said, “Whenever he is satisfied with what he does, he has reached his culminating point—he will progress no mor e.”

This reminds me of Picasso, whose artistic contributions greatly influenced the path of 20th Century art. But what has impressed me most is not the many successes he achieved but his enterprising spirit. Besides being “the greatest artist of the 20th Century,” he was also acclaimed as “the youngest artist in the world” because he unremittingly pursued and explored new styles of painting all his life, well into his old age. After producing his most famous post-impressionist style, he later developed many other styles and even at the last moment of his life continued to produce new paintings.

Study the following set of drawings carefully and write an essay in which you should

1) describe the set of drawings, interpret its meaning, and

2) point out its implications in our life.

You should write about 200 words neatly on ANSWER SHEET 2.(20 points)

The above two pictures draw a sharp contrast with each other. In one picture, a flower grows in a greenhouse and is in full bloom despite the heavy rain outside. But in the other, the flower is outside and, is withering in the thunderstorm without the protection of the greenhouse. The two pictures show us that a flower raised in a greenhouse and carefully protected cannot withstand natural wind and rain.

It is most likely that the artist means to compare children in our country to the flowers in his drawings, reflecting a problem in the present state of education of our children. For one thing, most children are brought up by their parents with tender care nowadays. Parents always try their best to meet their children?s needs, providing them with the best environments for growth and study, and protecting them from all possible injuries, setbacks and sufferings. For another, owing to China?s current examination-oriented education system, most children are too heavily burdened with studies to have time to take part in social activities, and so have little contact with society and the real world outside their family and school. Growing up in such a manner and environment, children will inevitably and naturally lack the ability to withstand hardships and trials and overcome obstacles when they leave their parents and step into the society.

In sum, the problem with our children?s education must be solved in a timely and effective manner because it is they that constitute the young future of our country.
