The Dragon Boat Festival is one of the major Chinese festivals officially celebrated in China on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. The occasion is typically celebrated during the summer months with boat races and competitions, especially in the southern provinces of China which have many rivers and lakes. In the West and other countries of eastern Asia, “Duan Wu” or “Duan Yang” this festive occasion is also known as the “Double Fifth Day”.

While there are many stories about the origin of the “Double Fifth Day”, the myth of Qu Yuan is popularly held to be the actual reason behind the origin of the festival. Qu Yuan was a third century poet and political figure of the State of Chu ( situated in present-day Hunan and Hubei provinces). He was a minister during the Warring States Period (475-221BC) of Chinese history. The story about Qu Yuan has been deeply rooted in Chinese culture and in believed by many to be the main factor for the origin of the festival. However, scholars and historians have pointed out that a number of popular traditions associated with the festival already existed even before Qu Yuan and they have gone on to suggest many other origins of the festival. Studies have shown that the nature of celebrations related to the festival is characteristic of the celebration of the harvest of winter wheat and other such crop festivals of ancient Chinese agricultural society. Scholars suggest that similar celebrations had long existed in many other parts of China and with increased interaction between people in different regions of the nation, these festivals finally got merged(合并) and acquired an independent identity.

We were in the ER for observation for a couple of hours and when it was time to leave I realized I had no money with me to pay the toll to leave the emergency parking lot. It was late enough (10p.m.) that the cafeteria wasn’t open, and my credit card wasn’t working in the ATM machine. The hospital volunteer told me to find a security guard

Teenagers in norway sometimes don't know how lucky they are. We have lots of money and a family. We don’t appreciate all of these things. When I think about teenagers in Africa and South America, I just start thinking about what I really use my money on. It’s not on important things like food, but on candy and chocolate, and all of those things that others can’t afford and that’s unhealthy.

I get 100 NKr each week. All the money is gone in half a week. But when I think back on what I spend it on, I really don’t understand why I bought all the things. Instead of spending the money on things that I don’t need, I could have donated it to someone who needs it. Teenagers in Africa, struggle for life with maybe only 10 NKr each month, while I’m complaining on that I don’t have enough money. I don’t have a job, but I get my money from my mom. African teenagers have bad paid jobs and they don’t get any money from their parents. Is that really fair?
