Control of portable chargers strengthened on airplane

Portable chargers are popular among busy travelers, but the safety concern behind

the small, smart equipment has led the Civil Aviation Administration 民航管理局of China to tighten up the control on which devices each passenger is allowed to carry.

According to the notice on the administration's website earlier

today, portable batteries with a capacity(容量) of less than 100 watt-hours are allowed to carry on luggage. Each passenger is allowed to carry no more than two portable batteries with a capacity between 100-160 watt-hours, and those above 160 watt-hours are prohibited on the plane. If the capacity of a portable charger is not specially stated, it is also forbidden. Portable batteries are completely banned in checked luggage.

During the flight, portable chargers cannot be used and need to be switched off. The rules also apply to airline staff, according to the notice.

Last month, a sample inspection of portable chargers by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine showed that 100 percent of sampled products have safety risks, including the possibility of explosion due to a short circuit(短路), potential damage to the charged equipment and over charging capacity, according to nandu.com last month.

According to the survey, portable chargers have great market potential; yet the manufacturing(制造)of portable chargers lacks national standards and inspection.

One day when I was 12, my mother gave me an order: I was to walk to the public library, and borrow at least one book for the summer. This was one more weapon for her to defeat my strange problem — inability to read.

In the library, I found my way into the “Children’s Room.” I sat down on the floor and pulled a few books off the shelf at random. The cover of a book caught my eye. It presented a picture of a beagle. I had recently had a beagle, the first and only animal companion I ever had as a child. He was my secret sharer, but one morning, he was gone, given away to someone who had the space and the money to care for him. I never forgot my beagle.

There on the book’s cover was a beagle which looked identical to my dog. I ran my fingers over the picture of the dog on the cover. My eyes ran across the title, Amos, the Beagle with a Plan. Unknowingly, I had read the title. Without opening the book, I borrowed it from the library for the summer.

Under the shade of a bush, I started to read about Amos. I read very, very slowly with difficulty. Though pages were turned slowly, I got the main idea of the story about a dog who, like mine, had been separated from his family and who finally found his way back home. That dog was my dog, and I was the little boy in the book. At the end of the story, my mind continued the final scene of reunion, on and on, until my own lost dog and I were, in my mind, running together.

My mother’s call returned me to the real world. I suddenly realized something: I had read a book, and I had loved reading that book. Everyone knew I could not read. But I had read it. Books could be incredibly wonderful and I was going to read them. I never told my mother about my “miraculous” (奇迹般地) experience that summer, but she saw a slow but remarkable improvement in my classroom performance during the next year. And years later, she was proud that her son had read thousands of books, was awarded a PhD in literature, and authored his own books, articles, poetry and

C. he found its title easy to understand D. he liked children’s stories very much

The oddness of life in space never quite goes away. Here are some examples. First consider something as simple as sleep. Its position presents its own challenges. The main question is whether you want your arms inside or outside the sleeping bag. If you leave your arms out, they float free in zero gravity, often giving a sleeping astronaut the look of a funny ballet (芭蕾)dancer. “I’m an inside guy,” Mike Hopkins says, who returned from a six-month tour on the International Space Station. “I like to be wrapped up.”

On the station, the ordinary becomes strange. The exercise bike for the American astronauts has no handlebars. It also has no seat. With no gravity, it’s just as easy to pedal violently. You can watch a movie while you pedal by floating a microcomputer anywhere you want. But station residents have to be careful about staying in one place too long. Without gravity to help circulate air, the carbon dioxide you exhale (呼气) has a tendency to form an invisible (隐形的)cloud around your head. You can end up with what astronauts call a carbon-dioxide headache. Leroy Chiao, 54, an American retired astronaut after four flights, describes what happens even before you float out of your seat, “Your inner ear thinks you’re falling. Meanwhile your eyes are telling you you’re standing straight. That can be annoying—that’s why some people feel sick.” Within a couple days —truly terrible days for some —astronauts’ brains learn to ignore the panicky signals from the inner ear, and space sickness disappears.

Space travel can be so delightful but at the same time invisibly dangerous. For instance, astronauts lose bone mass. That’s why exercise is considered so vital that National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) puts it right on the workday schedule. The focus on fitness is as much about science and the future as it is about keeping any individual astronauts return home, and, more importantly, how to maintain strength and fitness for the two and a half years or more that it would take to make a round-trip to Mars.

32. What is the major challenge to astronauts when they sleep in space?

A. Choosing a comfortable sleeping bag B. Deciding on a proper sleep position C. Seeking a way to fall asleep quickly D. Finding a right time to go to sleep. 33. The astronauts will suffer from a carbon-dioxide headache when _____.

A. they circle around on their bikes B. they use microcomputers without a stop

C. they exercise in one place for a long time D. they watch a movie while pedaling 34. Some astronauts feel sick on the station during the first few days because _____.

- 5 -

A. their senses stop working B. they have to stand up straight C. they float out of their seats unexpectedly D. their brains receive contradictory messages

35. One of the NASA’s major concerns about astronauts is _____. A. how they can remain healthy for long in space B. how much exercise they do on the station

C. whether they can recover after returning home D. whether they are able to go back to the station 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
