Most gift-giving shows nothing more than the spirit of love and friendship. But it is possible to form some associations between the kinds of things bought and the people who buy them.

Clothing The clothes you wear tell something about your personality. They tell the world not only how you want to be seen but how you see yourself as well. When someone gives you something to wear that corresponds to your self-image,they’re saying,―I agree with you. I like you the way you are. ‖Such a gift should be taken as a form of compliment. On the other hand,a gift of clothing that does not match your personality could be an insult to your character .

Expensive gifts Naturally, some gifts like jewelry will be more expensive than others. But some people give higher priced gifts than necessary for the situation. Someone who gives an expensive gift often feels that he should receive more praise than if he had given a less expensive gift. Therefore he is giving himself a gift, too status.

Homemade gifts Making something by hand has become the exception in many countries today—so much so that giving a homemade gift is sometimes considered extraordinary. If you receive a homemade gift, you’re lucky. It may no. t be made perfectly, but it will show a certain quality of love. No matter what the results of the homemade gift look like, remember it’s the thought that counts.

Books People who gives books as gifts either like reading or would like everyone to think they do. A good way to know this is to find out whether or not the giver bought the book according to how large it is. If you happen to receive a large heavy book, its giver may be much more interested in the way things appear than in the way they actually are。Anyhow, giving a book can be a way of sharing a feeling or a newly learned meaning. The giver is probably trying to say to you what the books aid to him.

41. Which of the following best expresses the main idea of this passage? A. Gift-giving may reveal the giver’s personality in some way, B. Most gift-giving shows the spirit of love and friendship. C. Homemade gifts are more precious than expensive ones. D. We should be careful in choosing and giving expensive ones. 42. Expensive gifts may represent

A. deep love B. high respect C. a sense of superiority D. generosity 43. According to the passage, homemade gifts . A. are very special B. show deep affection C. should be cherished D. all of the above

44. A thin book as a gift means A. a good book about books B. a large and heavy book C. a rare and valuable book D. a book really meant to be read

45. Which of the following gifts is not mentioned in the passage? A. Clothing. B. Flowers. C. Jewelry. D. Books.

A mother wanted to encourage her son’s progress at the piano. She bought tickets to a performance by a great pianist. When the evening arrived, they found their seats near the front of the concert hall and looked at the big piano waiting on the stage. Soon the mother found a friend to talk to,and the boy slipped away.

At 8 o’clock, the lights in the hall became weak. The spotlights(聚光灯)came on. Only then did they notice the boy up on the piano bench, playing Twinkle,Twinkle Little Star. His mother was shocked, but before she could get her son back, the master himself was 0n the stage and quickly moving to the piano.

He went up to the boy and said gently,‖Don’t stop. Keep playing. ‖Then he leaned(屈身)over and reached down with his left hand and began filling in the bass(低音部)part. Soon his fight arm reached around the other side and played a delightful piece of music. Together, the old master and the little boy carried the crowd away with their beautiful music.

In all our lives,we receive helping hands—some we notice, some we don't. Equally we ourselves have a great many chances to give a helping hand to others—sometimes we like our help

About ten men in every hundred suffer from color blindness in some way. Women are luckier; only about one in two hundred is affected in this matter. Perhaps, after all, it is safer to be driven by a woman!

There are different forms of color blindness. In some cases a man may not be able to see deep red. He may think that red, orange and yellow are all shadows of green. Sometimes a person cannot tell the difference between blue and green. In rare cases an unlucky man may see everything in shades of green-a strange world indeed.

Color blindness in human beings is a strange thing to explain. In a single eye there are millions of very small things called ―cones‖. These help us to see in a bright light and to tell difference between colors. There are also millions of ―rods‖, but these are used for seeing when it is near dark. They show us shape but no color.

Some insects have favorite colors. Mosquitoes prefer blue to yellow. A red light will not attract insects, but a blue lamp will. In a similar way human beings also have favorite colors. Yet we are lucky. With the aid of the cones in our eyes we can see many beautiful colors by day, and with the

aid of the rods we can see shapes at night. One day we may even learn more about the invisible colors around us.

48. The passage is mainly about _____________.

A. color and its surprising effects. B. women being luckier than men C. danger caused by color blindness D. color blindness

49. According to the passage, with the help of the ―cones‖, we can_______________. A. tell different shapes B. see in a weak light C. kill mosquitoes D. tell orange from yellow 50. Why do some people say it is safer to be driven by women? A. Women are more careful. B. There are fewer color-blind women C. Women are fonder of driving than men. D. Women are weaker but quicker in thinking.

51. Which of the statements about the color- blind is true? A. Not all of them have the same problem in recognizing color. B. None of them can see deep red.

C. None of them can tell the difference between blue and green. D. All of them see everything in shades of green.

52. We can attract and kill mosquitoes by using a _____________. A. red light B. yellow light C. blue light D. green light

The question of what children learn, and how they should learn it, is continually being debated and redebated. Nobody dares any longer to defend the old system, the parrot-fashion(way of learning by repeating what others say)of learning lessons, the grammar-with-a-whip(鞭子)system, which was good enough for our grandparents. The theories of modern psychology have stepped in to argue that we must understand the needs of our children. Children are not just small adults; they are children who must be respected as such.

Well, you may say, this is as it should be, and a good idea. But think further. What happens? ―Education‖ becomes the responsibility not of teachers, But of psychologists. What happens then? Teachers worry too much about the psychological implications(暗示)of their lessons, and forget about the subjects themselves. If a child dislikes a lesson, the teacher feels that it is his fault, not the child’s. So teachers worry whether history is ―relevant‖ to modern young children. And do they dare to recount stories about violent battles? Or will this make the children themselves violent? Can they tell their classes about children of different races, or will this encourage racial hatred? Why

teach children to write grammatical sentences? Oral expression is better. Sums? Arithmetic? No: real-life mathematical situations are more understandable.

You see, you can go too far, Influenced by educational theorists, who have nothing better to do than write books about their ideas, teachers leave their teaching-training colleges filled with grand, psychological ideas about children and their needs. They make complicated(复杂)preparations and try out their ―modern methods‖ on the long-suffering children. Since one ―modern method‖ rapidly replaces another, the poor kids will have well been fed up by the time they leave school. Frequently the modern methods are so complicated that they fail to be understood by the teachers, let alone the children; even more often, the relaxed discipline so necessary for the ―informal‖ feeling the class must have, prevents all but a handful of children from learning anything. 56. Under the old system, children were .

A. made to learn passively B. spoiled by their parents C. treated as adults D. were forced to become parrots 57. Modern psychologists hold the view that . A. children must be understood and respected

B. children are small adults and they know what they need C. children are better off without learning lessons

D. education of children is the responsibility of psychologists

58. What happens when teachers pay too much attention to the psychological implications during a lesson?

A. They find that children dislike the lessons.

B. They tend to blame students for their failure in teaching. C. They don’t pay enough attention to students’ actual lessons. D. They no longer want to teach children history.

59. How do you understand the underlined sentence at the end of the passage? A. Children will learn well in a relaxed classroom atmosphere. B. Few children will actually learn when there is no discipline. C. Relaxed discipline is necessary for children to develop. D. No children will learn anything without strict discipline.

60. What is the author’s attitude toward the theories of modern psychology?

A. Uninterested. B. Tolerant. C. Satisfied. D. Critical. 第二节

Should We Study by Talking in Self-study Classes?

Lately our class has had a discussion on whether we should study by talking in self-study classes. Views vary from person to person

45 percent of the students consider it is of good studying by talking in self-study classes. They think it can help to find better ways to solve problems. What’s more, they think it can help to make up for what one hasn’t mastered. However, 55 percent of the students hold the opposite view. They insisted that talking means lacking independent thinking and meanwhile the loud noises caused by it will disturb others.

In my opinion,we shouldn’t say ―no’’ to studying by talking, nor should we say ―yes‖ to studying by talking loudly and much too often.
