The Atlantic Ocean is one of the oceans that separate the Old World from the New. For centuries it kept the Americans from being discovered by the people of Europe. Many wrong ideas about the Atlantic made early sailors unwilling to sail far out into it. One idea was that it reached out to ―the edge of the world.‖ Sailors were afraid that they might sail right off the earth. Another idea was that at the equator(赤道)the ocean would be boiling hot. The Atlantic Ocean is only half as big as the Pacific, but it is still very large. It is more than 4,000 miles (6,000km) wide where Columbus crossed it. Even at its narrowest it is about 2,000 miles (3,200km) wide. Two things make the Atlantic Ocean rather unusual. For so large an ocean it has very few islands. Also, it is the world‘s saltiest ocean. There is so much water in the Atlantic that it is hard to imagine how much there is. But suppose no more rain fell into it and no more water was brought to it by rivers. It would take the ocean about 4,000 years to dry up. On the average the water is a little more than two miles (3.2km) deep, but in places it is much deeper. The deepest spot is near Puerto Rico. This ―deep‖ measures

30,246 feet-almost six miles (9.6km). One of the longest mountain ranges of the world rises from the floor of the Atlantic. This mountain range runs north and south down the middle of the ocean. The tops of a few of the mountains reach up above the sea and make islands. Several hundred miles eastward from Florida there is a part of the ocean called the Sargasso Sea. Here the water is quiet, for there is little wind. In the days of sailing vessels(船)the crew were afraid they would be becalmed(停滞不前)here. Sometimes they were. Today the Atlantic is a great highway. It is not, however, always a smooth and safe one. Storms sweep across it and pile up great waves. Icebergs float down from the Far North across the paths of ships. We now have such fast ways of traveling that this big ocean seems to have grown smaller. Columbus sailed for more than two months to cross it. A fast modern steamship can make the trip in less than four days. Airplanes fly from New York to London in only eight hours and from South America to Africa in four!

51. Which world is the Old World? A. Africa B. Europe C. Asia D. All of above 52. What caused people to be unwilling to explore the Atlantic? A. There are no ships big enough to get across the Ocean. B. Sailors were afraid of being lost in the Ocean. C. The Atlantic Ocean was very unusual because it has few islands and the saltiest water.

D. Many incorrect ideas such as ―the edge of the world‖, ―the equator with boiling hot water‖, made people think the Ocean was full of danger.

53. What is the topic of the fifth paragraph? A. How deep the water is B. How to measure the water in the Atlantic Ocean C. How much water the Ocean holds. D. How rain affects the Ocean water. 54. We can learn from the text that ______. A. the Atlantic is the largest ocean on earth B. one of the longest mountain ranges lies in the Atlantic C. the Atlantic has a lot of islands in it

D. sailing on the Atlantic Ocean is always quiet, smooth and safe

Though war is something people hate, Director Feng Xiaoning often exposes his audience to it.

―If we don‘t impress the audience, who are without the painful experience of war, with the cruel injury to life and human nature war causes, how can we bring them a love of peace and objection to war?‖ asked the director with a glance in his eyes.

After Red River Valley and Lover‘s Grief over the Yellow River, both of which star Chinese model and actress Ning Jing, Feng drew a satisfactory full stop to his war trilogy (三部曲) last month with Purple Sunset.

The film tells a story which took place in 1945, at the very moment when World War II was drawing to an end. A Chinese peasant and a Soviet woman soldier flee into a forest, where they seize a Japanese girl. They follow the girl in the hope that she will take them out of the forest, but instead they arrive in a Japanese base. Humanity (人道主义) prevents them from killing the young, innocent (无辜的) victim of Japanese militarism. This humanity, the longing for peace and eagerness to survive, make the three unite.

―If people are touched by justice, tolerance and unselfishness, I think I have achieved my goal,‖ Feng said.

Feng admits that there are violent and bloody scenes in the film, such as tanks fighting and

Japanese burning Chinese people alive, to show the cruelty of the war. But that‘s never his personal preference, he says.

―Everyone who has watched my films can tell how much I hate war,‖ he said. ―I wrote all the things for my war films by myself. Whenever I finished one, I felt as though I had suffered great pain.‖

Feng regards every one of his productions as an opportunity to learn about human nature and humanity. In spite of violent scenes which frighten and sicken the audience, a balance is sought with beautiful scenery. Just like the snowy mountains in Red River Valley and the grand plateau (高原) in Lover‘s Grief over the Yellow River, a beautiful vast grassland appears in this film. ―I used to study art, and I appreciate beautiful things,‖ Feng said. ―I believe that films should offer the audience a chance to enjoy beauty.‖

55. Director Feng Xiaoning shot war film because _____.

A. he was deeply interested in such a topic

B. he wanted to give the audience the painful experience of war C. he hoped to arouse people‘s love of peace and objection to war D. he dreamed of becoming a world-famous director

56. All of the following belong to Feng‘s war trilogy except _____.

A. Red River Valley B. Lover‘s Grief over the Yellow River C. Purple Sunset D. In the Mood for Love

57. A Chinese peasant and a Soviet woman solider seized a Japanese girl so that _____.

A. they could find the Japanese base easily B. she could take them out of the forest C. they could kill her for revenge

D. it would cause the Japanese militarism to give in

58. Scenes of Japanese burning Chinese people alive in the film are to ______.

A. show that war is cruel B. attract people‘s interest

C. show Feng‘s personal preference in dealing with details D. make the film moving and interesting

The earth‘s most rich resource—water has become one of the most precious resources in the United States as rivers, lakes, and freshwater reservoirs are increasingly exploited for human use. Consequently, using precise farming techniques to improve ―irrigation scheduling‖ is a research area of particular interest to Susan Moran, a researcher with the US department of Agriculture. She explains that in the southwest, irrigation is both difficult and expensive. There, she says, farmers have a tendency to over irrigate, spending both more time and money than is necessary.

―I‘m trying to provide new information that could be used by farmers to schedule irrigations to improve their profitability and use less water,‖ Moran says. ―Farmers often look at weather changes and then schedule irrigation based on that information. But if they had better information, they could use scientific models to compute more precisely how much water their crop is using. ‖

Rather than guessing their crop‘s potential need for water based upon weather changes, farmers can use remote sensors to measure how much water their crop is actually using. This would give them a more accurate measure of how much more water it needs.

Moran believes that if farmers are getting good and timely measurements of plant and air temperature, then they can program when and how much water to give each crop through an irrigation system. No more water would be used than needed, thus saving cost and conserving water.

Moran introduces one study she conducted in Arizona to investigate the use of remote sensing data for scheduling cotton irrigations. Typically, those farmers irrigate ten times per growing season, but evidence showed that some of those farmers could achieve basically the same harvest with only nine irrigations.

―In those cases, one less irrigation saved more than all the cost of remote sensing data,‖ she states. ―Both irrigation and satellite remote sensing data are expensive. But then again many farmers are used to wording together as a group. They are used to sharing. I‘m hoping they could do the same with remote sensing data—purchase one scene over a large area to cover many farms, which would further reduce the cost. ‖

63. What does Moran think is the problem with farmers?

A. Over-used reservoirs. B. Precision farming. C. Irrigation researches. D. Over-irrigation. 64. How can farmers get the new information about their crop?

A. To reschedule irrigation as required. B. To watch weather changes regularly.

C. To use remote sensors as researchers suggest.

D. To use scientific models since computing is more reliable.

65. What‘s the purpose of Moran introducing the study she carried out in Arizona?

A. To investigate the use of remote sensing data.

B. To support her viewpoint in the previous paragraph. C. To show how farmers can reap a harvest.

D. To criticize those farmers who used too much water.

66. What is among the best possible ways to help save farmers‘ money?

A. Changing irrigation. B. Sharing sensing data. C. Buying one computer. D. Extending the farms.

In some countries where racial prejudice is acute, violence has so come to be taken for granted as a means of solving differences, that it is not even questioned. There are countries where the white man imposes his rule by brute force; there are countries where the black man protests by setting fire to cities and by looting and robbing. Important people on both sides, who would in other respects appear to be reasonable men, get up and calmly argue in favor of violence – as if it were a legitimate solution, like any other. What is really frightening, what really fills you with despair, is the realization that when it comes to the crunch, we have made no actual progress at all. We may wear collars and ties instead of war-paint, but our instincts remain basically unchanged. The whole of the recorded history of the human race, that tedious documentation of violence, has taught us absolutely nothing. We have still not learnt that violence never solves a problem but makes it more acute. The horror, the bloodshed, the suffering mean nothing. No solution ever comes to light the morning after when we look at the smoking ruins and wonder what hit us. The truly reasonable men who know where the solutions lie are finding it harder and harder to get a hearing. They are despised, mistrusted and even persecuted by their own kind because they advocate such apparently outrageous things as law enforcement. If half the energy that goes into violent acts were put to good use, if our efforts were directed at cleaning up the slums (平民窟) and ghettos (犹太社区), at improving living-standards and providing education and employment for all, we would have gone a long way to arriving at a solution. Our strength is sapped (耗费) by having to mop up the mess that violence leaves in its wake. In a well-directed effort, it would not be impossible to fulfill the ideals of a stable social programme. The benefits that can be derived from constructive solutions are everywhere apparent in the world around us. Genuine and lasting solutions are always possible, providing we work within the framework of the law. Before we can even begin to consider peaceful co-existence between the races, we must appreciate each other‘s problems. And to do this, we must learn about them: it is a simple exercise in communication, in exchanging information. ?Talk, talk, talk,‘ the advocates of violence say, ?all

全卷共10页

7

you ever do is talk, and we are none the wiser.‘ It‘s rather like the story of the famous lawyer who painstakingly explained his case to the judge. After listening to a lengthy argument the judge complained that after all this talk, he was none the wiser. ?Possible, my lord,‘ the lawyer replied, ?none the wiser, but surely far better informed.‘ Knowledge is the necessary prerequisite (先决条件) to wisdom: the knowledge that violence creates the evils it pretends to solve. 67. What is the best title for this passage?

A. Advocating Violence.

B. Violence Can Do Nothing to Diminish Race Prejudice.

C. Important People on Both Sides See Violence As a Legitimate Solution. D. The Instincts of Human Race Are Thirsty for Violence. 68. Recorded history has taught us

A. violence never solves anything. B. nothing. C. the bloodshed means nothing. D. everything. 69. It can be inferred that truly reasonable men

A. can‘t get a hearing. B. are looked down upon.

C. are persecuted. D. Have difficulty in advocating law enforcement. 70. According the author the best way to solve race prejudice is

A. law enforcement. B. knowledge. C. nonviolence. D. Mopping up the violent mess. 第四部分:书面表达(共两节,满分40分)

4. Knowledge is the necessary prerequisite to wisdom.

70. A法制。

I am Li Ming of Senior Three, Guangming Middle School.I am writing to tell you about some symptoms of anxiety among us students before exams.

Most of us feel nervous whenever we‘re taking an important exam. Some will feel dizzy or tired, some will suffer from lack of sleep, and some will lose their appetite. In fact, all these symptoms have terrible effects on our exams and we are all eager to get rid of them.

First of all, in my opinion, it‘s important for us to have a right attitude towards exams. They are only a means of checking how we are getting along with our studies, so there is no need to worry too much about the results.Study hard every day and make careful plans for every exam.In this way we can avoid suffering from the pressure of exams.

Besides, enough sleep can make us energetic and enable us to perform well in an exam. Therefore, during the period of exams, we should not stay up too late.We can also try a warm bath or a cup of warm milk before going to bed. They might help us to have a sound sleep.

(We‘d better go out for a walk or do some outdoor exercises before and during an exam so that we can keep ourselves relaxed and then concentrate ourselves on exams.)
