Cell phones are all around us. We use cell phones to call our friends, send text messages, play games, and even take photographs. Now imagine using your cell phone to call your air conditioner (空调器). People are already working to develop different ways to communicate wirelessly with devices we use every day. For example, it is already possible for cell phones to communicate with laptop computers. Business people using laptops during meetings can use their cell phones as remote controls. They can use their cell phones to send instructions to computers to turn on, change pictures, and turn off.

With the same technology, people can use their cell phones to control other devices. You can call your stereo (立体声音响设备) to play music automatically (自动地). You can call your lights to turn on when you enter a room. Maybe even by next summer you will be able to call your air conditioner!

Peter Owen has been making wigs (假发) since the 1980s. He has made wigs for the stars of more than seventy movies, including Tom Hanks in Philadelphia, Johnny Depp in Sleepy Hollow, and Nicole Kidman in The Others. One of his biggest jobs so far has been designing the hair and make-up for the three Lord of the Rings movies. He had just six weeks to design and make more than a hundred wigs, each one a different style, colour, shape and length.

The hair and make-up in a movie are just as important as the costumes(戏装) or the sets. Over the years, Peter has made actors look older, younger, healthy and sick. For one movie he even made a female actor look like a man!“What people don’t realize about wigs is that we are not always making people more beautiful,” he says. “Often we are covering up beauty and making them look ordinary.”

All Peter’s wigs are hand-made using human hair, so they look as real as possible. This also makes them very expensive―between US$4,500 and US$12,500 each! He knows he’s done a good job when people don’t realize the star of the movie is wearing a wig. So he was pleased when one newspaper said that Nicole Kidman had dyed her hair dark brown for a movie. “It was a wig and no one knew that,” he says.

56. How many wigs did Peter make for the three Lord of the Rings movies?

A. More than one hundred. B. Seventy.

C. Sixty. D. Three hundred.

57. What’s the best heading for Paragraph 2?

A. How wigs can change people’s height. B. Peter Owen: Wigmaker to the stars.

C. Peter’s wigs look very real. D. Peter’s wigs are very expensive.

58. What special feature about wigs does Peter mention?

A. They can make people more beautiful.

B. They can change people’s hair styles.

C. They can cover up beauty and make people look ordinary.

D. They can make people look younger.

59. Why are Peter’s wigs so expensive?

A. They are made in foreign countries.

B. Peter makes the best wigs.

C. They are only made for rich film makers.

D. They are handmade using human hair.

60. Which statement is NOT TRUE about Peter?

A. Peter Owen has made wigs for lots of movies.

B. Designing and making the wigs for The Lord of the Rings was a huge job.

C. In a movie, the costumes are more important than the hair and make-up.

D. If people think that a wig is real hair, Peter is happy.

Val Plumwood was exploring a river in Kakadu National Park in northern Australia. As her canoe went round a bend, she saw a stick in the water. When she got closer she saw that the stick had eyes―golden eyes. It was a crocodile!

Val tried to turn the canoe away but the crocodile hit it hard. Over and over again it hit the canoe. The bank of the river was very steep, so Val tried to jump into a tree. When she jumped, the crocodile grabbed her with its jaws and pulled her under the water.

Crocodiles kill an animal by rolling it around under the water until it becomes weak. This is called the“death roll”. They then hold the animal under the water until it drowns (淹死). The crocodile rolled Val around and around. Her head came out of the water and she took a deep breath, but the crocodile pulled her under again. After a second death roll, Val felt the crocodile’s jaws pull her under again. After the third death roll, Val pulled herself free and threw herself up the steep bank. At first she kept falling back toward the crocodile, but finally she was able to pull herself to the top of the bank.

Four hours later she was found and taken to hospital. She was badly hurt, but alive!

61. When Val first saw the crocodile, what did she think it was?

62. What happens to an animal when a crocodile holds it under the water?

63. How many times did the crocodile roll Val around in a “death roll”?

64. How did Val escape from the crocodile?

In the summer of 1917, two English schoolgirls, sixteen-year-old Elsie Wright and her cousin Frances Griffiths, spent many hours playing near a stream (溪流) in a place called Cottingley Glen. Frances, who was only nine, would often come home with her shoes and clothes wet. This

annoyed her mother and her aunt, Elsie’s mother. They asked Frances why she kept going into the stream. Frances was silent for a moment, and then replied that she went to see the fairies (仙女). The two women didn’t believe her. Then Elsie said that she had seen the fairies too and that they would take photographs to prove it. So they borrowed Elsie’s father’s camera and went back to Cottingley Glen.

The girls produced a number of photographs of themselves with fairies. Mr Wright did not believe the fairies were real, but the girls’ mothers were not so sure. They didn’t think their daughters would trick them and, like many people at that time, they wanted to believe that fairies existed. They showed the photographs to other people, who studied them and argued about them. Many believed that the Cottingley Glen fairies were real, even the famous author Arthur Conan Doyle.

It wasn’t until 1983 that Elsie admitted to a journalist that the photographs were fakes (伪造品). The girls had drawn the fairies, cut them out and used pins to stand them up. Elsie said she couldn’t believe that their “little joke” had tricked so many people for so many years.

A) One possible version:

Hi Lily,

How are you? On Saturday night I’ll have a birthday party at my house and I’d like to invite you. You can come to Baishan by train and, if you want, I can pick you up from the station. Since we are on our winter holiday, I’m hoping you can stay with me for a few days. I’ll take you to some places of interest. We’ll have great fun.

See you soon, Louis

B) One possible version:

I enjoy going to fast food restaurants such as McDonald’s and KFC. Fast food saves time and

it’s also very convenient.

However, experts say that fast food is full of fat and sugar which can cause people to grow heavier and heavier. And if a person eats too much fast food he will not feel like eating other things. As a result, he will become overweight and weak.

If fast food can cause health problems, we should choose to eat healthy food. I think it’s wise to eat traditional food. It is also important for us to help other people around us make good food choices.

Part IV. Passages

A) You will hear a passage. Choose the best answer to each question. The passage will be read twice. Woman:

The brain is the most amazing part of our bodies. But just like our bodies, it needs care. Getting a good night’s sleep, eating a balanced diet and taking deep breaths are all important ways of looking after both your body and your brain.

Many people think their brain will slow down with age and their memory will get worse. The truth is, just like your body, you can also improve your brain. I’ve found I can improve my memory by picturing what I need to remember. For example, if I’m going shopping and I need bread, milk and a birthday card for my brother, I picture a loaf of bread, a bottle of milk with a cow in the front and a birthday card with a football on it.

The same kind of thing can be used with important dates. If you have a picture in your mind of a special event it’s much easier to remember than just a number.

Another way of improving your mind is to make sure you often visit new places and have new experiences. I find learning Spanish is a great way to keep the brain working, but communication in any language is important.

B) You will hear a passage. Choose the best answer to each question. The passage will be read twice. Man:
