One October, Reporter Claire and her dad set off on a 14-day Antarctic adventure. A polar company Offered them the trip as a prize in an essay contest. Here, Claire talks about her big experience.

When I learned we were going to Antarctica to see emperor penguins(帝企鹅), I was really excited. I was a little nervous, too. To get there, we’d have to travel by ship through the Drake Passage which is the deepest and most dangerous one in the world.

At the beginning, we flew from Los Angeles, California, to Ushuaia, Argentina. Ushuaia is at the bottom tip of South America. From there, we sailed for two days to cross the Drake Passage. Huge blue-and-white icebergs were here and there. we reached Snow Hill Island on the third day of the travel.

Mornings in Antarctica began early. After breakfast, we prepared for our outings on the ice. We had to take a helicopter to get to the emperor penguins. After landing, we hiked a mile to reach the penguins. We passed groups of seals and seabirds. We could hear honking(雁鸣及类似的声音) as we got closer.

Then we saw them: huge groups of penguins. Emperor penguins are curious . They came up to close to see what we are. But we weren’t allowed to touch them. We spent two days at Snow Hill Island.

Going to Antarctica was like travel ling to another planet. It was an amazing experience. I hope to return some day.
