Representatives of more than one hundred governments agreed on the findings. This is the most detailed scientific report on global warming and the influence of fossil—fuel(矿物燃料)burning and other human activity.

B Everyone wondered how we are able to conduct a conversation at a noisy party. Researchers from Japan,Canada and Germany have found that it is our left brain that picks out the desired sounds from a cacophony(杂音)of loud, competing sounds. “In daily life,we are always exposed to several noises at the same time and we have to pick up important signals, for example, speech sounds, from the background noises,”wrote researcher Ryusuke Amiga from Japan’s National Institute for Physiological Sciences. “We found that the left hemisphere(大脑半球)is generally dominant(占支配 地位的)for auditory(听觉的J processing in noisy environments,”he said.

It is well known that speech signals are processed in the left brain. But this

study, led by Hidehiko()kamoto and Christo Pantev at the Uniw:rsity of Muenster in Germany。promotes our understanding of how the human brain is able to zero in on the specific sounds it wants and process them. In the latest issue of the online journal, the scientists said they used neuroimaging and observed neural(神经的)mechanisms in volunteers who were exposed to different combinations of tests and background sounds.

“Test sounds were played either to the 1eft or to the right ear, while the competing noise was presented either to the same or to the opposite ear,”they wrote.

“By monitoring(监测)the brain’s response to these different sound combinations.the team observed

People like the Secretary of Education simply don’t know what they’re talking about when they criticize students.Nor do those who complain about falling academic (学术的)standards.

The vast majority of the nation’s 12 million students are struggling to pay for their educations. They are part of the invisible work-force.Many hold down full-time

jobs. They’re frying hamburgers, photographing weddings, working in construction, and waiting on tables. The financial situation of most students explains a lot about what is happening in schools. Why are the traditional courses so unpopular? Why are students flocking

(成群结队)to computer science and any professional programs that seem to lead to careers?

The answer is that today’s students have been practical.Romance is gone. Today’s students seek freedom from manual labor.

There are other consequences.Today’s students don’t have much time or energy to be devoted, and carry out independent research or even do serious homework.

That’s the secret behind falling academic standards.Students have become consumers,TheY want grades and certifications.Their professors can’t be expected to give a grade of failure to students who are clearly tired from the effort to pay their bills. There's a lot wrong with this situation. It’s twisting the definition of education out of shape.Worse,it’s creating a generation that is totally unpleasant. The brightest students turn out to be yuppies(雅皮士).

What this country needs is someone to stand up and say that being a full—time student during one’s influential years is an honorable calling worthy of support. If families can’t or won’t give it to their children, then the government should. 72.The author’s purpose in writing this article is to .

A.awaken the whole society to the problems today’s college students face B.warn Americans that academic standards are falling C.advise college students to study hard

D.provide a suggestion that only full—time students be told to leave their school 73.The most suitable word to describe the author’s feelings about today’s college students is“ ”

A.criticize B.sympathize C.complain D.praise 74.Which of the following CAN’T be learned from the passage? A.Many students are often absent from classes. B.Traditional courses are not popular. C.Students commit crimes with computers.

D.Students don’t devote much time and energy to their homework. 75.The underlined part“Romance is gone”in Paragraph 4 means A.today’s students do not believe in love stories any more

B.today’s students become more practical in dealing with things

C.students think there is no love any more and end a relationship with their lovers D.today’s students hold matter-of-fact opinions on religion
