M:So how was yesterday's performance? Did I miss out on anything good? W:Hardly, I kept looking at my watch the whole night. (Text 3)

W:How wonderful to see you here! I wonder where you have been after graduation.

M:I have been abroad for ten years. What about you? W:Me? Still in our college, I became a teacher. (Text 4)

M:It's already 12:30. Let's go for lunch.

W:Can you wait for me a few minutes? I'll be through with my report right away.

M:I'm afraid I can't, because I have to go to the editor's office in half an hour. W:Then you go first. (Text 5)

W:Good morning, Dr Zane's office.

M:This is Mr Hill. I have a ten o'clock appointment, but I'm running a little late. Do you have any openings this afternoon?

W:Sorry we don't. Can you come in tomorrow mor-ning? (Text 6)

W:Now that Abby has finished her presentation, let's evaluate her speech. Jason, what do you think of her presentation?

M:She spoke loudly and clearly and she seemed quite confident. W:OK. What else?

M:Her speech was well organized. Her conclusion reminded me of all the important points she had made.

W:Good. Now, what about some things that Abby might work on for next time? M:There were some long pauses when she was trying to think about what to say next.

W:True. Perhaps practicing a few more times before her speech would help her not to pause as much.

(Text 7)

M:Hi. I don't think we've met. My name's Tom.

W:Hi, Tom. Nice to meet you. My name is Juanita, but everybody calls me Jenny.

M:Nice to meet you, Jenny. So, where are you from?

W:Well, I was from Australia, but we moved to the United States when I was about five years old. My parents now live in Chile. That's where they first met. How about you, Tom?

M:I was born in California, and we lived there until I was seven. W:Oh yeah? Where did you go after that?

M:Well, we spent a total of ten years in Germany and Japan, and then we returned to the States, but I think my parents would have stayed in Japan, let's say, another 20 years had it not been for my education.

W:Wow. It sounds like you've had an interesting life. So, what do you do now? M:I'm a student at Purdue University. (Text 8) W:Hi, Jim.

M:Hi, Alice. What's that?

W:It's my protest, that is, some suggestions to the government. Do you want to sign it?

M:A protest? Who for?

W:It's against doing tests on animals. I'm going to send it to all the companies that test medicines on animals.

M:What? Are you pulling my leg?

W:No, I'm not Jim. This is serious. Do you want to sign it? M:Yes, I do. W:Well then, sign!

M:Hold on. They need to test medicines and drugs, don't they? They can't give them to people without testing them.

W:Look, Jim. There are lots of other ways to cure illnesses without using drugs. M:I don't know about that. Anyway, people are more important than animals. W:Animals have rights too, you know.

M:Of course, they do. But people have more rights. W:Jim! I can't believe my ears! Don't you like animals? M:Of course I do, but ...

(Text 9)

M:Now Cathy, do you know when the visitors from India are coming? W:We offer them three choices: the end of March, the middle of April and the beginning of May. They've chosen the earliest one which is good actually with exams coming up in May.

M:And how many are coming? Did you say about 12?

W:Yes, they said 12 at first, but reduced to the half this morning.

M:Good, we have eight weeks to prepare, here are my suggestions. On the first day, a welcome party, then they can visit the schools in the district on the second and third days.

W:We forgot that this group wants to look at how computers are being used in the classroom.

M:Exactly, so I want to ask Mr Goodman to give them a talk on this on the afternoon of the third day.

W:That will be very nice.

M:And on the last day, they would do some sightseeing, we could take them on the tour of London but many of them may have already been, and Scotland will be too far away.

W:Why not take them for a walk along the coast, it should be interesting. M:Good idea! Cathy, I'm sure they'll like it. (Text 10)

Some time ago, a friend of mine who worked in a part of the city I didn't know very well, invited me to call on him. It took me hours to get there and I took great trouble to find a proper spot to park my car. As I was already three-quarters of an hour late, I parked my car quickly.

At noon, just as I was leaving my friend's office, it suddenly struck me that I had no idea where I had parked my car. I could hardly go up to a policeman and tell him that I had lost a small green car somewhere! Walking down street after street, I examined each car closely and was very happy to see a small green car just behind an old car. But how disappointed I was to discover that though the car was exactly like my own, it belonged to someone else! Feeling quite tired now, I went off for lunch. Some time later, I left the restaurant and walked down the street. Turning

the corner, I nearly jumped for joy: my car was right in front of me, and there was no problem this time.

To tell the truth, driving in crowded cities is far from being a pleasure and it is much easier to walk than to drive.

For five days, Edmonton's Downtown Park is transformed into one huge stage where artists are able to share their talents, and where people are able to celebrate and enjoy themselves.Since its beginning in 1980, the Edmonton Folk Music Festival has been commemorating (纪念) the true feeling of what folk music is all about and that's the traditional togetherness (友爱) that is felt when people gather to share stories and feelings through song.

This year will be the sixth year when volunteer Riedel will be offering up her time to the festival.“People coming off a busy spring and summer have a moment of relaxation,” Riedel said.“It's really easy to relax, and it's great seeing family and friends have fun together.” These families and friends come from all different kinds of musical tastes. People who take pleasure in Blues are there, so are people who love Bluegrass. This festival does its best to develop everyone's musical interests.

With so many years of experience, the festival has become a well-oiled machine, and does whatever it can to make attendees feel as comfortable as possible. There are free water stations throughout the venue(举办地) for people to fill up their travel cups. When people buy food, reusable dishes are given a $2 plate fee, but that is returned when the plate is brought back.

The festival has completely sold out of tickets, and in record time. But with big names such as Van Morrison and Jakob Dylan, it's easy to see how that was going to happen. There is no parking area during the festival, so using the Park & Ride system or Edmonton Transit is highly recommended. A bike lock-up area is provided and will be available Thursday until Sunday one hour before the gates open until 45 minutes after the gates close.

The Edmonton Folk Music Festival begins on Wednesday,Aug.4 with Van Morrison playing the special donation fund (基金) concert, and will finish up on Sunday, Aug.8.

A.Folk Music of Blues B.One Festival for All

C.Festival for Family Gathering D.Edmonton's Downtown Park

由第二段第一句可知今年将是Riedel第六次在该民间音乐节做志愿者,A项的叙述是对的;由第二段倒数第二句中的“People who take pleasure in Blues are there...”可排除B项;由第三段第二句“There are free water stations throughout the venue for people to fill up their travel cups.”可排除C项;由第三段最后一句“...reusable dishes are given a $2 plate fee,but that is returned when...”可排除D项。

58.B 推理判断题。由第四段可知,该民间音乐节各方面的安排非常好,由此推出B项的叙述是正确的。由第四段第一句可知,音乐节的票已经售完,排除A项;由第四段第三句“There is no parking area during the festival,so using...”可知,开私家车去音乐节并没有被推荐,排除C项;由第四段最后一句中的“A bike lock-up area...available Thursday until Saturday”可知只提供停放自行车的场地,排除D项。

(2013·海南嘉积中学月考)

Recently, while hiking in the foothills of South Carolina, I happened to notice a small, yet quickly flowing whitewater stream. While relaxing and enjoying the aloneness, I sensed a battle for favorable position between the highlyspirited water and the large rocks resting on the bed along the edges of the stream.

At first; the rocks, stubborn, immovable and unbending, seemed to have their way with their adversary (对手). However, the water, determined yet forgiving, seemed merely inconvenienced by the presence of the rocks, as it effortlessly changed its course, running towards its original destination.

Soon it became clear that the rocks, although remaining strong and firm, were losing this battle as the water's total indifference began to slowly reform these obstacles (障碍) into smooth and beautifully polished stones.

You see, there seemed to be total lack of struggle associated with the water's journey. Struggle is like bondage (束缚) forcing harmony and the water would have none of that. On the contrary, the water seemed perfectly content to move around the rocks when necessary, following some route God had originally intended.

I paused for thought. Maybe people need to be more determined and less stubborn. Maybe human beings need to always be open to different points of view, not afraid to readjust their direction as life presents all of its new and unforeseen challenges.

60. When hiking in the foothills, the author was ________. A. lonely C. nervous

B. delighted D. confused

61. When fighting with the water, the rocks ________. A. were made into irregular patterns B. were lacking in the spirit of struggle C. stuck to their original method all the way D. redesigned their path according to the situation

62. The water won the battle mainly because it was ________. A. changeable C. aggressive

B. brave D. powerful

63. The author wrote the text mainly to ________. A. stress the importance of determination B. praise the openmindedness of the stream C. share with us his interesting journey

D. give us some advice on how to deal with challenges

答案与解析

60. B 细节理解题。根据第一段While relaxing and enjoying the aloneness, I sensed a battle for favorable position between the highlyspirited water and the large rocks resting on the bed along the edges of the stream可知,当时作者的心情是轻松愉快的。

61.C 推理判断题。根据第二段At first, the rocks, stubborn, immovable and unbending, seemed to have their way with their adversary可推断出,岩石一直坚持最初的方法,倔强地阻止流水的行进。

62.A 推理判断题。根据第二段However, the water, determined yet forgiving, seemed merely inconvenienced by the presence of the rocks, as it effortlessly changed its course running towards its original destination可推断,流水获得胜利的主要原因是灵活多变。

63.D 作者意图题。根据文中最后一段可知,作者写水与岩石的故事,目的是告诉读者应该如何正确面对挑战。

C

(2012·重庆高考)

In his 1930 essay “Economic Possibilities for Our Grandchildren”, John Keynes, a famous economist, wrote that human needs fall into two classes: absolute needs, which are independent of what others have, and relative needs, which make us feel

superior to our fellows. He thought that although relative needs may indeed be insatiable(无止境的), this is not true of absolute needs.

Keynes was surely correct that only a small part of total spending is decided by the desire for superiority. He was greatly mistaken, however, in seeing this desire as the only source of insatiable demands.

Decisions to spend are also driven by ideas of quality which can influence the demand for almost all goods, including even basic goods like food. When a couple goes out for an anniversary dinner, for example, the thought of feeling superior to others probably never comes to them. Their goal is to share a special meal that stands out from other meals.

There are no obvious limits to the escalation of demands for quality. For example, Porsche, a famous car producer, has a model which was considered perhaps the best sports car on the market. Priced at over $120,000, it handles perfectly well and has great speed acceleration. But in 2004, the producer introduced some changes which made the model slightly better in handling and acceleration. People who really care about cars find these small improvements exciting. To get them, however, they must pay almost four times the price.

By placing the desire to be superior to others at the heart of his description of insatiable demands, Keynes actually reduced such demands. However, the desire for higher quality has no natural limits.

64. According to the passage, John Keynes believed that ________. A. desire is the root of both absolute and relative needs B. absolute needs come from our sense of superiority C. relative needs alone lead to insatiable demands D. absolute needs are stronger than relative needs 65. What do we know about the couple in Paragraph 3 ? A. They want to show their superiority. B. They find specialty important to meals. C. Their demands for food are not easily satisfied. D. Their choice of dinner is related to ideas of quality.

66.What does the underlined word “escalation” in Paragraph 4 probably mean? A. Understanding. C. Difference.

B. Increase. D. Study.

67.The author of the passage argues that ________. A. absolute needs have no limits B. demands for quality are not insatiable C. human desires influence ideas of quality D. relative needs decide most of our spending

Dear Water—Use It Wisely,

More and more water is getting wasted each day. I want to help out and teach people how to conserve water. Please continue reading because your organization is very influential. I had an idea that you could send some workers from your organisation to schools all around the world, and they could inform the students about water usage.

Did you know that every minute, 1,000,000,000(one billion) tons of water falls to the earth from rain? We are lucky to have rainwater. It helps fill up our lakes. There is about 326,000,000,000,000,000,000 gallons of water on Earth. Yes, this is tons, but it is getting wasted.

Everyone needs water. So why waste it? I think it is very irresponsible to let the water run when you are not at home. We can use water with respect by making good choices. Take a shower instead of a bath, use an automatic dishwasher instead of hand washing. You can buy Earth-friendly cleaner spray, so that our drinking water will not

be polluted. If your washer isn't full, then don't start it. With water being wasted every day, by the time we get to the 3000s we are going to have to survive on milk and juice! Won't that be boring? That means we will have to give our dogs a bowl of juice instead of water with their food. I mean, come on,we're talking real life here!

Water wasting needs to come to a stop and without delay. Water-Use It Wisely, PLEASE inform people about their water usage! It plays a big role in my life. It would be really great if you take part in spreading the news about this! Thanks tons!

What makes a good school?

I'm a parent of two elementary students. The experience that my children are going through now in the elementary school is so different from mine when I was at their age. What I think of a good school is communication between teachers, students and parents. __71__ Parent-teacher communication guarantees that a child is educated in the same way and in turn a child will build special bonds in communication between their teachers and parents.

__72__ My children return home telling me that their teachers ignore their questions when they raise their hands and don't talk much. On the other hand, I feel the same when I write notes to school. __73__ This is telling me there is a lack in communication from the school teachers nowadays as their life is so overwhelmed by the over-crowded schools we have in the US.

However, choosing a career in education is not just for a good job. A teacher should really have heart in touching every child's life. __74__ Even now, I still remember all my elementary school teachers' names. __75__ The answer lies in the fact that they spent every minute of their precious time helping me and answering all my questions with patience. When you have teachers who are willing to spend time for any child and communicate with parents, it is what I consider a GREAT school for a child to attend, not just GOOD.

A.I don't get any response from the teachers to my questions, not even a one-word response.

B.There are different ways of communication, according to different cultures. C.Why is that?

D.Strong communication is very important to a child's education.

E.I feel that schools nowadays don't communicate with parents enough and neither is involvement.

F.My elementary school teachers all touched my life. G.What do you think of it?

答案

One possible version: Dear friends,

Welcome_to_our_school._I_am_Li_Yue,_president_of_the_Student_Union._I'd_like_to_briefly_introduce_the_Hangzhou_Public_Bicycle_Service_to_you.The service, with an attempt to raise people's environmental awareness and to ease traffic jams, has gained great popularity since its introduction in 2008. The number of the public bikes available for use has grown considerably to 65 thousand. There are approximately 80 million rides annually.

People around me are really proud of this green transport option that does not further contribute to traffic jams. It also provides great convenience for the local people as well as the tourists who want to explore the city. Besides, it is a cheap alternative as riders can cycle all day for free so long as they stop and check in every single hour.

I strongly recommend that you rent one and enjoy the fun of getting about the city on it. You will never regret!

Thank you for listening.
