After a homeless man offered a college student all the money he had so that she could get home safely, the student is paying it forward in a big way.

The story happened in December. It was about 3: 00 am and Harrison-Bentzen was afraid. “I came out after a college student night out and realized that I didn’t have any battery on my phone. I had lost my friends,” she said. She had also lost her bank card, and she had no money.

Just then, a homeless man, known only as Robbie, came close to the girl and asked her whether she needed help. He reached into his pocket and pulled out all the money he had---loose change about $4. 60. He insisted that Harrison-Bentzen take it to pay for a taxi so that she could get home safely.

She refused to take Robbie’s money and found another way to get home. However, following

5

her encounter (偶遇) with the generous man, she said that she couldn’t forget him.

For the next few days, the student searched for Robbie, driving around the streets with her mother. At that time, Harrison-Bentzen said that she learned more about Robbie and discovered that he actually had a reputation for helping strangers.

Finally, after four days of driving around Preston, Harrison-Bentzen found Robbie. She was determined to do something to help change Robbie’s life.

Therefore, the student launched a fundraising campaign in Robbie’s name. She explained that she would be spending 24 hours on the streets to “understand the difficulties” that the homeless face on a daily basis.

Harrison-Bentzen said that she had hoped to raise about $780 with her campaign. Her expectations, however, were quickly blown out of the water. So far, 4, 800 people have donated almost $50, 000.

49. Why did Harrison-Bentzen spend 24 hours on the streets? A. To make her campaign more famous. C. To experience the homeless people’s life.

One of the reasons why you don’t have your alarm on during the day is that you know you will keep forgetting to turn it off every time you want to step into the garage or go outside, so you just keep it off. That isn’t smart, because many home invasions (入侵) occur during the daylight hours.

Typically, home security systems require you to push buttons. What if you panic and forget the code? What if you accidentally disable it? What if your naughty visiting nephew messes with

6

it? Now, it’s time for the voice-controlled home security system developed by Enter Angee Company.

What Can Angee’s System Do for You?

· Say goodbye to those wall keypads where you might accidentally hit the wrong button.

· Kiss goodbye to having to remember numerical codes, worrying if your elderly parents will remember it and worrying if a burglar could crack it.

· By detecting the Bluetooth signal from your phone, Angee will automatically arm when you leave, and disarm when you arrive home.

· As a backup method of identification if you lose your phone or the battery run out, you can use voice recognition to disarm Angee.

· Enjoying your private moments? Don’t want Angee to observe? Just say, “Turn Away.” You can even set Angee to the automatically activate privacy mode when specific people are present in your home.

Video Surveillance (监视)

Instead of cameras trained on one spot, Angee’s surveillance will respond to motion and turn to face it. This allows Angee to record events wherever the action is. This way, an intruder (侵入者) won’t be able to avoid the camera range. Angee Knows You Are Coming

When Angee is paired up with your smart phone, it will perform commands once you get close enough to your house after being out. Therefore, if you want the alarm to be disarmed as you approach your front door, Angee will do this, because it will detect when your mobile device is within a certain range.

50. How is Angee’s home security system different from a traditional one? A. It will push buttons in place of the users. B. It can remind the users to have their alarms on. C. It’s smart, voice controlled and it can run itself. D. It’s powerful and it can detect events all day. 51. The questions are listed in Paragraph 2 to _____. A. attract our attention to the home security B. introduce the contents the author will talk about

7

C. persuade us to stop using traditional alarms D. ask us to fix Angee s system at home right now

52. After you have Angee’s home security system fixed, you needn’t _____. A. connect it with the Bluetooth signal

B. worry about the wrong use of a phone

C. remember the boring numerical codes D. meet some important people at home

C

For young kids, sharing isn’t easy to understand. However, this skill is important for kids as they begin to socialize with their peers, and at last have an increased sense of self-awareness and understanding. More often than not, parents can easily think of a moment in their kids’ childhood where shouts of “No!” or “Mine!” played a regular role in their daily life.

Socializing your kids early by getting them to connect with schoolmates or kids who are around the same age as them is the first step. You might find that kids naturally learn many things by observing one another. While argue may happen from time to time, learning to play well with others will help your kids become more aware of the effects of their actions.

Sharing is often linked with kids’ understanding of fairness, so teaching kids to take turns with toys or other items that you might want them to share, and they will reduce their natural control over something. Remind kids that they will get their turn, which means that they must learn to be patient.

In their early years, kids learn more than you might think from simply observing the actions of those around them. If you have older kids, give them the opportunity to take the lead by having them share items like snacks or toys with their younger sisters or brothers. Experiencing generosity and sharing first hand will be a major help when it comes to learning to do it themselves.

Most importantly, kids should form the habit of sharing. When you see your kids using their new skills by sharing items with their friends or family members, be sure to advert to their actions. By noticing your kids’ progress, there will only be room for further improvement of their sharing. 53. Waiting for toys to play with can help young kids _____. A. become more patient

B. relieve their parents’ worry D. learn from each other naturally

C. show respect to each other

54. What can we infer from Paragraph 4?

8

A. It’s important for kids to experience sharing in person. B. Elder kids are often the leaders of their families. C. Younger kids should follow elder ones’ advice. D Parents should be generous to their kids.

55. The underlined part “advert to” in the last paragraph most probably means “_____”. A. praise

B. notice

C. approve

D. improve

56. What’s the main idea of the text? A. How to teach young kids to share.

B. Sharing helps kid develop healthily. D. Parents have great effects on their kids. D

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is America’s fifth-largest city. Once a major American colonial (殖民的) city, it is the home of America’s first library, its first hospital, and its first zoo. Now it is also the first U. S. city to be named a World Heritage city. On November 6, 2015, Philadelphia joined more than 260 other cities that have been recognized for their impact (影响) on the world. These cities include Paris, France; Florence, Italy; and Cairo, Egypt.

“Today marks the start of a new and exciting chapter in the history of Philadelphia,” remarked Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter with excitement and passion when the announcement was made. “As a World Heritage City, Philadelphia is being officially recognized on the global stage for its wealth of contributions to the world.”

To be named a World Heritage City, a city must be home to a UNESCO World Heritage site. UNESCO World Heritage sites are selected for their universal value and significance. For Philadelphia, that site is Independence Hall. Independence Hall is where two of the most important documents in U.S. history---the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution---were adopted. The Declaration of Independence, approved on July 4, 1776, united the 13 former British colonies and declared them independent from British rule. The U.S. Constitution, signed in 1787, established the American democratic (民主政体的) system of government. A democracy is a system of government in which the people elect their leaders. The Constitution later spelled out the basic freedoms American citizens have.

Philadelphia Deputy Mayor Alan Greenberger says the city’s selection as a World Heritage City also reflects its educational, cultural, and economic achievements. The city is home to dozens

9

C. Arguments among kids can’t be avoided.

of colleges and universities, and many museums, such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art. “Philadelphia has rightfully earned its place as one of the greatest cities in the world,” Greenberger says.

57. It can be learned from Paragraph 1 that Philadelphia _____. A. was greatly affected by other World Heritage cities B. was once the biggest colonial city in America C. is famous as a World Heritage City

D. is known for many famous firsts

58. How did Michael Nutter feel about Philadelphia’s selection as a World Heritage City? A. Proud.

B. Stressful.

C. Lucky.

D. Surprised.

59. What can we learn from Alan Greenberger’s words in the last paragraph? A. It is easy for Philadelphia to win the honor of being a World Heritage City. B. The honor of being a World Heritage City will bring the city a better future. C. Philadelphia deserves the honor of being a World Heritage City. D. Philadelphia should become the best World Heritage City. 60. Which one would be the best title for the text? A. Philadelphia Develops a Lot

B. Philadelphia Makes a Difference

C. Philadelphia Wins Global Respect

D. Philadelphia Was Selected as a World Heritage City

For years, caffeine (咖啡因) has been considered socially acceptable because it is found in drinks like tea or coffee. People who consume a lot of caffeine-based drinks may think they are addicted---depending heavily on it. But if they stop using such drinks, they will feel slightly uncomfortable for a few days. The real addiction may be emotional. Many people claim they cannot start their day unless they get their “fix”, which is, in many cases, a cup or two of coffee.

10

Even young people who may not touch tea or coffee are still putting caffeine into their bodies when they have energy drinks, which have high amounts of caffeine.

Caffeine is a bitter substance found in coffee, tea, soft drinks, chocolate, kola nuts and some medicines. It has many effects on the body, including helping to activate the central nervous system. This can make you more awake and give you increased energy.

Experts say drinking two to four cups of coffee a day is not harmful to most people. But too much caffeine can make you easy to get angry and worried. It may also cause headaches, abnormal heartbeats and other problems. Caffeine may affect how the body reacts to some drugs and vitamins (维生素).

Would you like a drink of coffee or tea? A study showed that few people have Type 2 diabetes (糖尿病) in countries where people drink a lot of tea. Especially black tea---might be the best choice. It found black tea is better for your health than coffee. However, coffee is one of the world’s most popular drinks---perhaps the most popular. Results of a large American study may help to make it even more popular. The study showed that drinking coffee might help reduce the risk of oral cancer.

61. Where can caffeine be found? (no more than 11 words) 62. What is the main idea of Paragraph 3? (no more than 9 words)

63. How did the author introduce the result of a study in Paragraph 4? (no more than 5 words) 64. What is the author’s attitude to caffeine? (no more than 4 words)

65. If you were given water and tea, which do you prefer? Give your reason. (no more than 20 words)

M: Hi, Jane. Haven’t seen you for a long time! Where have you been?

W: I was in Singapore for two days for a seminar and then came back to work here in Paris. Next month I will be sent to a branch in Los Angeles and then to another branch in Toronto the month after that. (Text 2)

M: I’d like three tickets for tonight’s show. Here is a one-hundred-yuan note. W: OK. Three tickets… and here is your change---ten yuan. (Text 3)

W: What’s your plan for the weekend, Jack?

M: I’ve read a lot about the Great Wall. Now that I’m finally here in China, I think this is a good chance for me to visit it. How about you?

W: I’ m going to go shopping. I want to buy some silk ties for my father. (Text 4)

W: I haven’t seen you for ages. What have you been doing, Mike?

M: I’ve been working as a salesman since we graduated from the law school. What about you, Alice?

W: I worked as a lawyer for one year, but I’m now working at a big insurance company. M: Good for you. (Text 5)

W: What do you think I should cook today? M: How about we go out to eat?

W: But we went out to eat last night and the before. I’m beginning to think that you don’t like my cooking.

M: No offense, but if you opened a restaurant, it would probably get closed down by the health department. (Text 6)

W: Sam, could you do me a favor tomorrow? I need someone to help me pick up my aunt from the airport.

W: I’d like to help, but I’m having surgery tomorrow on my toe. W: What’s wrong with your toe?

M: I broke it when playing football yesterday.

W: Really? What was your surgery for the last time? Was it also from playing football?

M: No. I was out running one morning and didn’t notice a large stone in front of me. I hit it with my toe and broke it. 1 had to go to see Dr. Allen that time too. He’s really a good doctor, so I’m not worried about having surgery a second time. (Text 7)

W: Hi, Mark. This is Susan. I think I caught the flu or something. I feel worse than yesterday. I cannot stop coughing and I think I have a fever. I’m afraid I cannot come to the office today. M: I’m so sorry to hear that. Have you seen a doctor?

W: Not yet. I took some pills last night and this morning, but it doesn’t seem to be any better. M: It sounds very serious. Do you have anyone to take you to the hospital? You might need to see a doctor.

W: No. All my friends are at work right now. M: I’ll come over and pick you up.

W: Don’t you have a meeting to attend this morning?

Hello, everyone. In today’s program, we’ll continue talking about British culture, to help you avoid making embarrassing mistakes if you travel to Britain.

First of all, British people don’t like to be embarrassed or to cause other people embarrassment. They may be afraid that they may not be able to make a conversation with you, or to understand what you say to them. They may not know much about your country or culture, fear they might say something that offends you or may be afraid you won’t understand their jokes. So to avoid embarrassment, they may not come over right away and start a conversation with you.

British people like to have a lot of personal space. If there are several spare seats in a public
