meanings.

If you’re not sure about the spelling of a word, you can try to find the correct spelling in a dictionary. Words are listed in alphabetical order- a, b, c, and so on. For example, on a dictionary page the word “poor” – p, o, o, r- comes before “poverty” – p, o, v, e, r, t, y and the word “poverty”“power” – p, o, w, e, r. The words are always given in alphabetical order.

The second thing a dictionary will tell you . Most dictionaries give the pronunciation of a word in a special kind of alphabet. This special alphabet is called a phonetic, or sound alphabet. The phonetic spelling will tell you a word is pronounced. There are a few different phonetic alphabets. Many dictionaries use the International Phonetic Alphabet to show pronunciation.

There is an English saying, “laughter is the best medicine.” Until recently, few people took the saying seriously. Now, however, doctors have begun to look into laughter and the effects it has on the human body. They have found that laughter really can improve people’s health.

Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their heart, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise. It increases blood pressure, the heart beating and breathing; it also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and even the feet. If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial.

Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effect of pain on the body. In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programs. The group that tolerated the pain for the longest time was the group which listened to a funny program. The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it As a result of these discoveries, some doctors in the United States now hold laughter

Passage Three

You can use your Business Telecard International at any card phone in the UK. Here is some information about making international phone calls.

You can now phone almost any country in the world, although in some cases you can only call major cities. When you cannot make direct dialing calls, you can ask the international operator to help you. This is more expensive and takes more time, but it may be helpful if you want to speak to a particular person and no one else; in this case you should ask for a “person- to- person” call. Even more expensive is a reverse charge (对方付款)call when the person who receives the call pays.

If the international line is busy, you can reserve a call; explain the number you want and the operator will call you back when the line is free.

You can save money by calling outside office hours, e.g. early in the morning, late at night, and on Sundays.

Remember that the time may be different in the country you are calling. International

time is based on GMT (Greenwich Mean Time); London is on GMT and Moscow, for example, 3 hours ahead.

There is one problem: change to DST (Daylight Saving Time) for the Summer. In the UK,

clocks are put forward one hour in Spring and put back in Autumn, and so London is actually one hour ahead of GMT in the Summer.

You can use your Business Telecard International for domestic calls as well, but there

will be an additional charge over the standard rate.

71. What is the most expensive type of call?

A. Direct dial

B. Through the operator

C. Reverse charge call

D. Outside office hours

72. What can you do if the international line is engaged?

A. Book a call.

B. Make a “person- to- person” call

C. Call back outside office hours

D. Keep on calling

73. When is it cheaper to make an international call?

A. 10 a.m. B. 5 p.m. C. 11 p.m. D. 11a. m.

74. How many hours is Moscow ahead of London during the summer?

A. 2 B. 3 C. 4. D. 5

A. call on Monday B. ask the operator to pay some money

C. keep waiting D. phone on a Sunday

Passage Four

There was once a man who spent all his time in his glasshouse. Flowers was his name, and flowers were his main joy in life. He grew flowers of every color under the sun. He grew these flowers in order to enter them for competition. His greatest hope in life was to grow a rose of an entirely new color that would win him the silver cup for Rose of the Year.

Mr. Flowers’ glasshouse was close to a public path, which was always used by children walking to and from school. Boys were often attracted to throw a stone or two at his glasshouse. So Mr. Flowers did his best to be in or close by his glasshouse at the beginning and end of the school day.

However, it was not convenient or possible to be on guard all the time. Mr. Flowers had tried in many ways to prevent harm to his glass; but nothing that he had done had been successful.

Then, just as he was giving up hope of ever winning the battle, and of growing the Rose of the Year, he had a truly wonderful idea. He put up a large notice made of good, strong wood; some meters away form the glasshouse, where it could be clearly seen from the path. He had

painted on the board the words: DO NOT THROW STONES AT THIS NOTICE. After this, Mr. Flowers had no further trouble. The boys were much more attracted to throw stones at the notice than at the glasshouse.

76. Mr. Flowers’A. to grow beautiful flowers
