Test Paper 4

Part I Writing (30 minutes)

注意:此部分试题在答题卡1上。

Part II Reading Comprehension(Skimming & Scanning)(15minutes)

Directions: In this part , you will have 15minutes to go over the passage quickly and answer the questions on Answer Sheet 1.

For question 1-7, mark

Y (for YES) if the statement agrees with the information given in the passage; N ( for NO ) if the statement contradicts the information given in the passage; NG (for NOT GIVEN) if the information is not given in the passage.

For question 8-10, complete the sentences with the information given in the passage.

The average population density of the world is 47 persons per square mile, Continental densities range from no permanent inhabitants in Antarctica to 211 per square mile in Europe. In the western hemisphere, population densities range from about 4 per square mile in Canada to 675 per square mile in Puerto Rico. In Europe the range is from 4 per square mile in Iceland to 831 per square mile in the Netherlands. Within countries there are wide variations of population densities. For example, in Egypt, the average is 55 persons per square mile, but 1300 persons inhabit each square mile in settled portions where the land is arable(可耕的).

High population densities generally occur in regions of developed industrialization, such as the Netherlands, Belgium, and Great Britain, or where lands are intensively used for agriculture, as in Puerto Rice and Java.

Low average population densities are characteristics of most underdeveloped countries. Low density of population is generally associated with a relatively low percentage of cultivated land. This generally results from poor quality lands. It may also be to natural obstacles to cultivation, such as deserts, mountains or malaria-infested(疟疾成灾的)jungles; to land uses other than cultivation; to social obstacles; and to land ownership systems which keep land out of production.

More economically advanced countries of low population density have, as a rule, large proportions of their populations living in urban areas. Their rural population densities are usually very low. Poorer developed countries of correspondingly low general population living on arable land, which is as great as the rural concentration found in the most densely populated industrial countries.

itself forty miles an hour; the eye of every fly has exactly 7000 lenses; every spider's thread is composed of 300 single threads. The progress of civilization itself can be measured by its range of mathematics. The early Egyptians knew enough of geometry to build the pyramids and the Greeks used trigonometry to measure the circumference of the earth two thousand years before Columbus sailed. European civilization combined geometry and trigonometry with the decimal system of the Arabs to produce the maps with which the Europeans explored the world. In a later century, mathematicians studied the pendulum of the newly invented clock and created the language of calculus to measure motion. The yardstick of measurement today must cover everything from units tinier than atoms to distance of millions of light years. Speed and accuracy are vital. In navigating amid planets and stars, man must have the help of some kind of machine calculators for fast and absolutely accurate information.

57. The author shows how the exactness of nature's law is reflected in .

A) man's civilization B) the creature of nature

C) machine calculators D) all of the above

58. The progress of civilization can be measured by .

A) the range of man's mathematics

B) man's desire to define nature's laws

C) the skill with which man has applied calculus

D) man's success in defining natural laws

59. Which of the statements is TRUE?

A) The Greeks knew enough geometry to measure the circumference of the earth.

B) The early Egyptians knew enough trigonometry to build the pyramids.

C) The Arabs used the decimal system to produce maps to explore the world.

D) Man cannot navigate in space without sophisticated calculators.

60. Egyptian Pyramid construction makes use of .

A) geometry B) trigonometry C) calculus D) both A and B

61. The passage suggests that .

A) the world of nature is built with mathematical exactness

B) progress in civilization demands even better mathematical tools

C) in ancient times there was little need for mathematics

D) man must still develop a yardstick of measurement that will cover light years

Passage Two

Questions 62 to 66 are based on the following passage.

In a family where the roles of men and women are not sharply separated and where many household tasks are shared to a greater or lesser extent, notions of make superiority are hard to maintain. The pattern of sharing in tasks and in decisions makes for equality, and this in turn leads to further sharing. In such a home, the growing boy and girl learn to accept that equality more easily than did their parents and to prepare more fully for participation in a world characterized by

cooperation rather than by the "battle of sexes".

In the process goes too far and man's role is regarded as less important-and that has happened in some cases --- we are as badly off as before, only in reverse. It is time to reassess the role of the man in the American family. We are getting a little tired of "Momism" --- but we don't want to exchange it for a "neo-Popism". What we need, rather, is the recognition that bringing up children involves a partnership of equals. There are signs that psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and specialists on the family are becoming more aware of the part men play and that they have decided that women should not receive all the credits --- nor all the blame. We have almost given up saying that a woman's place is in the home. We are beginning, however, to analyze man's place in the home and to insist that he does have a place in it. Nor is that place irrelevant to the healthy development of the child. The family is a cooperative enterprise for which it is difficult to lay down rules, because each family needs to work out its own ways for solving its own problems. Excessive authoritarianism has unhappy consequences, whether it wears skirts or trousers, and the ideal of equal rights and equal responsibilities is pertinent (与…有关) not only to a healthy family.

62. Sharing tasks and decisions in a family leads to ____ _.

A) momism B) neo-popism C) inequality D) further sharing

63. If a boy or a girl has grown up in a home with sharing tasks and decisions, he or she will probably _ ___ _.

A) believe that life is a "battle of sexes".

B) accept equality as their parents did.

C) prepare more fully for participation in a cooperative world.

D) insist that man has a place in the home.

64. According to the author, man's role in the American family __ _ __.

A) less important than woman's B) equal to woman's

C) irrelevant to the healthy development of the child D) hard to maintain

65. Psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and specialists on the family ___ __.

A) are paying in creased attention to man's place in the home.

B) suggest that we exchange "Momism" for a "neo-popism".

C) women should receive all the credits and blames.

D) men should receive all the credits and blames.

66. The ideal of equal rights and equal responsibilities is ___ __.

A)related to either a healthy democracy or a healthy family

B)related to a healthy family as well as healthy democracy

C)related to neither a healthy democracy nor a healthy family

D)none of the above

Test Paper 4

Part I Writing

Mobile Telephone on Campus

With the development of science and technology, mobile telephone becomes more and more popular. Even the students on campus begin to use mobile telephone. Is it a good or bad thing? Mobile telephone, on the one hand, is good to the students. For one thing, it enables them to keep in touch with their friends and family more conveniently and quickly. For another, it can make the students fashionable and proud.

英语四级考试模拟题及答案

College English Test Band 4 (new)

On the other hand, mobile telephone has a negative effect on the students. First, it will cost them more money than before. Second, it will distract them from their study. Third, it will sometimes become a nuisance especially when it rings in class or in the library.

In my opinion, it is not good for the students on campus to use mobile telephone. Since the students? main purpose on campus is to study, they should pay much attention to their study. If they want to use mobile telephone, they can use it after graduation.

A man cannot live in society without considering the interests of others as well as his own interests. “Society” means a group of people with the same laws and the same way of life. People in society may make their own decisions. One man?s decisions may so easily harm another person. For example, a motorist may be in a hurry to get to a friend?s house. He sets out, driving at full speed like a competitor in a motor race. There are other vehicles and also pedestrians on the road. Suddenly there is a crash. There are screams and confusion. One careless motorist has struck another car. The collision has injured two of the passengers and killed the third. Too many road accidents happen through the thoughtlessness of selfish drivers.
