Some time ago I discovered that one of my chairs had a broken leg. I didn’t think there would be any difficulty in getting it mended, as there are a whole lot of antique(古董)shops near my home. So I left home one morning carrying the chair with me. I went into the first shop expecting a friendly reception. I was quite wrong. The man wouldn’t even look at my chair.

The second shop, though slightly more polite, was just the same, and the third and the fourth—so I decided that my approach must be wrong.

I entered the fifth shop with a plan in my mind. I placed the chair on the floor and said to the shopkeeper, “Would you like to buy a chair?” “Twenty pounds,” I said. “OK,” he said. “I’ll give you twenty pounds.” “It’s got a slightly broken leg,” I said. “Yes, I saw that. It’s nothing.”

Everything was going according to the plan and I was getting excited. “What will you do with it?” I asked. “Oh, it will be easy to sell once the repair is done.” “I’ll buy it,” I said. “What do you mean? You’ve just sold it to me,” he said. “Yes, I know but I’ve changed my mind. I am sorry. I’ll give you twenty-seven pounds for it.” “You must be crazy,” he said. Then, suddenly the penny dropped. “I know what you want. You want me to repair your chair.” “You’re right,” I said. “And what would you have done if I had walked in and said, ‘Would you mend this chair for me?’” “I wouldn’t have

agreed to do it,” he said. “We don’t do repairs, not enough money in it and too much trouble. But I’ll mend this for you. Shall we say for a fiver?” He was a very nice man and was greatly amused by the whole thing.

36. We can learn from the text that in the first shop the writer . A. was rather impolite B. was warmly received

C. asked the shopkeeper to buy his chair D. asked the shopkeeper to repair his chair 37. The expression “the penny dropped” in the last paragraph means the shopkeeper A. changed his mind B. accepted the offer

C. saw the writer’s purpose D. decided to help the writer 38. How much did the writer pay? A. £5. B. £7. C. £20. D. £27.

39. From the text, we can learn that the writer was . A. honest B. careful C. smart D. funn

Have you ever set a goal for yourself, like getting fit or being picked for a team? Like lots of people, maybe you started out doing great, but then lost some of that drive and had trouble getting motivated (激励) again. Everyone struggles with staying motivated and reaching their goals. Just look at how many people go on diets, lose weight, and then gain it back again! Check in with your goal. It helps if you write down your small goals in the same way you wrote down your big goal. That way you can follow what you need to do, check off tasks as you finish them, and enjoy knowing that you’re moving toward your big goal. If you’re feeling weak on willpower, you can look at your list to help you change! Go on with your goal if you slip up (出差错). If you slip up, don’t give up. Forgive yourself and make a plan for getting back on road. Pat yourself on the back for everything you did right. Don’t beat yourself up, no matter how far off track you get. Most people slip up when trying to make a change — it’s a natural part of the process. Share with a friend. Another way is having supportive people around you. Having a goal partner can make all the difference in times when you don’t feel motivated. If you’re not getting support from someone when you really need it, you may need to take a break from that friendship and make friends with people who want to help you succeed. Don’t give up! Ending an unhealthy behavior or creating a new, exciting one is all about taking responsibility (责任) for our lives. Finding the motivation to do it isn’t easy, but it is always possible. You can stay motivated by writing down your goals, sticking to your plan, and reminding yourself of what led you to set your goal in the first place. Change is exciting — we’d all be very bored without it. Good luck in reaching your goals!

40. The underlined word “drive” in the first paragraph refers to ______. A. the wish to achieve a goal B. the need to have great energy C. the pressure to drive fast D. the strong energy to drive

41. If a person slips up, the author thinks of it as ______. A. strange B. natural C. necessary D. wrong

42. What is the advice for staying motivated? A. To set a big goal in the first place. B. To share a goal with your friend.

C. To divide your goal into small ones. D. To make a plan for changing your goal.

43. The passage is mainly about how to ______. A. help your friend succeed at last B. set a big goal and reach it

C. deal with a friend who offers no support D. keep motivated to achieve your goal

Unfortunately, his son, Aran Azibe imprisoned him, his own father. And he spent the last seven years of his life in prison. And he was allowed to look at the Taj Mahal through a window. Often considered as “The Lost City of the Incas”, Machu Picchu is probably the most familiar symbol of the Inca Empire (印加帝国). It was built around the year 1450, but abandoned (遗弃) a hundred years later, at the time of the Spanish conquest of the Inca Empire. Forgotten for centuries, the site was brought to worldwide attention in 1911 by Hiram Bingham, an American historian. Since then, Machu Picchu has become an important tourist attraction. It was announced a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. It is also one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. But it has recently come to light that the site may have been discovered and robbed secretly as early as in 1867 by a Ger-man businessman, Augusto Berns.

7,000 feet above sea level and located on a small hilltop between the Andean Mountain Range, the majestic city rises above the Urabamba Valley below. Separated into three areas — farming, urban, and religious (宗教的) — the structures are arranged so that the function (功能) of the buildings matches the form of their surroundings. The agri-cultural terracing and ditches (梯田和沟渠) take advantage of the natural slopes (斜坡); the lower areas contain buildings occupied by farmers and teachers, and the most important religious areas are located at the crest of the hill, over-looking the fresh green Urabamba Valley thousands of feet below. Hikers, tourists, and the early explorers describe similar emotions as they climb their way through the Inca Trail. Many call the experience magical and say the area creates a wonderful green paradise, making it a must for anyone who travels to Peru. 48. Augusto Berns was said to ______.

People often say, “Even without stepping out of my house I know all that has been happening in the world.” I think that is quite true, especially in modern times.

We get all kinds of news from newspaper and TV and the Internet. This helps us to understand the developing world, without having to go to the places where events are really taking place.

Newspapers not only carry news but also teach us many useful things, such as first aid, cooking, playing games and chess, how to take good photographs and enrich us with common sense.

More and more people enjoy watching TV or going to Internet school everyday. Net school is very useful in many ways. First of all, it can make teaching and learning much easier with great interest. Students can get more information and knowledge in class. We can send E-mails to all parts of the world at any time, and get the latest information through the Internet.

Reading a newspaper or watching TV or going to net school can widen our view of knowledge. They help us improve our listening, speaking, reading and writing.

At one time, computers were expected largely to remove the need for paper copies of documents(文件) because they could be stored electronically. But for all the texts that are written, stored and sent electronically, a lot of them are still ending up on paper. It is difficult to measure the quantity of paper used as a result of use of Internet-connected computers,

although just about anyone who works in an office can tell you that when e-mail is introduced, the printers start working overtime. “I feel in my bones this revolution is causing more trees to be cut down,” says Ted Smith of the Earth Village Organization. Perhaps the best sign of how computer and Internet use pushes up demand for paper comes from the high-tech industry itself, which sees printing as one of its promising new markets. Several Internet companies have been set up to help small businesses print quality documents from a computer. Earlier this week Hewlett-Packard Co. announced a plan to develop new technologies that will enable people to print even more so they can get a hard copy of a business document, a medical record or just a one-line e-mail, even if they are nowhere near a computer. As the company sees it, the more use of the Internet the greater demand for printers. Does all this mean environmental concerns(环境问题) have been forgotten? Some activists suggest people have been led to believe that a lot of dangers to the environment have gone away. I guess people believe that the problem is taken care of, because of recycling(回收利用), said Kelly Quirke, director of the Rainforest Action Network in San Francisco. Yet Quirke is hopeful that high-tech may also prove helpful. He says printers that print on both sides are growing in popularity. The action group has also found acceptable paper made from materials other than wood, such as agricultural waste.

40. The growing demand for paper in recent years is largely due to ____.

A. the rapid development of small businesses B. the opening up of new markets C. the printing of high quality copies D. the increased use of the Internet

41. Environmentalists believe one possible way of dealing with the paper situation is ____.

A. to encourage printing more quality documents B. to develop new printers using recycled paper C. to find new materials for making paper D. to plant more fast-growing trees

42. Hewlett-Packard Co. has decided to develop new technologies because ____.

A. people are concerned about the environment B. printers in many offices are working overtime C. small companies need more hard copies D. they see a growing market for printers 43. What would be the best title for the text?

A. Computers and Printers.

B. E-mail and the Business World.

C. Internet Revolution and Environment. D. Modern Technology and New Markets.

Cyber Café(网吧) computer centers are found in many cities around the world. Now, a few American high schools are opening these centers. For example, high school in the state of Maryland began operating a Cyber Café last March. All students at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in Bethesda can use the Cyber Café. But school officials say it especially helps students who have no computer or cannot use the Internet at home. The officials say thirteen percent of the students at the school are from poor families. Many students have arrived in the United States from other countries only recently. Students in the school’s program for learning English speak twenty-three other languages. The idea for a Cyber Café at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School began three years ago. At that time, officials were planning to restore the school building. Parents interested in technology proposed a Cyber Café.

They wanted this center even though schools in the area had suffered budget(预算) cuts. The community wanted to help. It wanted all students to have the best chances to learn. Officials in the area supported the idea. So did an organization called the Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School Educational Foundation. The foundation includes parents, teachers, former students, and business, community and other leaders. Over two years, the foundation collected money for a Cyber Café and other new computers. It received more than one hundred seventy thousand dollars. The Café now has sixteen computers, a printer and a device called a scanner(扫描仪). School official Ann Hengerer (HEN-grr-er) says students use the Internet to complete research. They also write homework and required papers on the computers. In addition, they can send and receive electronic mails. That is especially helpful for the many students who have family members in other nations. The Cyber Café also serves a social purpose. Visitors can stop by for a drink of coffee, tea or hot chocolate. On Long Island, in New York, the Walther G. O’Connell Copiague(Co-PANG) High School has six computers in its Cyber-Café. One student at the school says students can start their homework even before they leave school. 44. What is mainly discussed in the passage?

As some cities start driving beggars from their major streets, some of the smarter ones have found a safer, more comfortable places to carry on—the Internet. These “Web beggars” go online with a dad story, and send out emails asking for money, according to a recent Beijing News report. The paper published one example from a reader who had received it. It said: “I’m from Chengdu. Dad died when I was a kid and Mum is seriously ill. My girlfriend has just dumped(丢下) me. I am so depressed that I cannot leave home. Would you please help me with 10 Yuan for a meal?” The sender left the name Li Dan and a bank account number.

A reporter later contacted(联系) Li Dan through QQ, a Chinese Internet chat service. He said that he was 21 and had recently dropped out of college. “I started begging via the Internet last December, just for fun,” he said. “But when I got the first 10 yuan in

January, I decided to become a full-time web beggar.” Li said he knew about 10 other web beggars in Chengdu. They all stayed at home to write emails and could probably send over 1,000 per day. They would exchange experiences and thoughts over QQ or beggar websites. “Sometimes, I’m very lucky and get money the same day I send the email,” Li said. “The largest amount I have received so far is 50 yuan.” Li collected 168 yuan last month from all around the country, the paper said. The story got some reaction from the public. Some saw it as a fresh idea but others suspected(怀疑) that it was just another form of cheating.

But, Li explained: “Real web beggars identify(确认) themselves by positing an email address and name on the web.” In related news, Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu Province, began to ban begging in eight of its major districts on Monday, according to local media.

That caused a heated debate(讨论) about whether it violated(妨碍) beggars’ rights. Most people supported the policy, repeating the old line that most beggars were not real beggars. And that they annoy people constantly(时常), according to a newspaper poll(计票). There have been previous media reports about Guangzhou, Suzhou, Shanghai and Beijing having similar policies, especially in subways and some other public areas. Nanjing’s “No Begging Zone” rule just about covers the entire city. That’s more controversial(引起争论的). 48. What does “web beggars” mean?

A. The beggars who have a net.

B. The beggars that ask for money by Internet. C. The beggars that like the Internet.

D. It’s a website which are controlled by some beggars. 49. Why are some beggars fond of Internet?

A. Because the places where the beggars are allowed to beg are becoming less and less. B. Because the Internet is safer and faster. C. Because the Internet is so developed.

D. Because the beggars are not allowed to leave home. 50. Which of the following is NOT TRUE?

参考答案:

一、单项填空

1. 【解析】选A。本题是在具体的语境中考查as much/many as,as long as,as soon as的

用法。“as much/many as”意为“多达??”;“as soon as” 意为“一??就??”;“as long as”引导条件状语从句,意为“只要”。而A项并非此意,因空格后跟一段时间, 指“(时间)长达??”,所以用“as long as”来表达。 2. 【解析】选D。从题干来看,“我”只能是被告知运动会可能推迟,因为tell动词后没有

宾语。从第二句“it all depends on the weather”的时态来看,第一句主句应用现在完成 时。

3. 【解析】选A。the way作was的定语,而且the way后接从句,可由in which,that引

导,也可以省去引导词。 4. 【解析】选A。“be used to doing”意为“习惯于做某事”,后接-ing形式,而do with与

what搭配,deal with与how搭配,而B项中deal with无宾语,不正确。 5. 【解析】选D。动词不定式修饰名词,作定语。“choose from?”意思是“从??里挑

选”。

6. 【解析】选D。“be used to doing”意为“习惯于??”,“be used to do”意为“被用来

做”,“used to do”意为“过去常常做??”。本句意为“和中国人不同,美国人习惯 用刀叉就餐。”

7. 【解析】选A。词组“be made up of?”意为“由??组成”;“make A(成品) of B(原料)”

意为“由??制成”;“make A(成品) from B(原料)”也表示“由??制成”;“make B(原

料) into A(成品)”意为“将??制成??”。

8. 【解析】选C。neither用语句首,要部分倒装,并且主语为any end,谓语用单数形式,

故选C。

9. 【解析】选D。定语从句中的关系代词应该代替的是the only one,故从句谓语用单数,

并且这是被动意思,应选D。

10. 【解析】选A。consider后也可接“疑问词+不定式”,表示“考虑做某事”。 11. 【解析】选D。此题考查way的用法,由way构成的短语很多,应特殊记忆。“on the way

(to)/on one’s way”意思是“在??路上”;“by the way”意为“顺便说一句”;“in a way” 意为“在某种程度上”;“(in)this way”意为“用这种方式”。

John plays football as well as David, if he doesn’t play better

than David.

I came to study in the United States a year ago .Yet I did not know the real American society until I was injured in a car accident because after the accident I had to see a doctor and go to court. After the accident .my roommate called a doctor for me. I was very grateful and determined to repay him one day. But the next day, he asked me to pay him $200 for what he had done. I was astonished. He had good reason to charge me, he said. And if I wanted to collect money from the person who was responsible for my injury, I’d have to have a good lawyer. And only a good doctor can help me get a good lawyer .Now that he had helped me find a good doctor, it was only fair that I should pay him.

But every day I went to see the doctor, I had to wait about 50 minutes. He would see two or three patients at the same time, and often stop treating one so as to see another. Yet he charged me $115 each time .The final examination report consisted of ten lines, and it cost me $215.

My lawyer was all smiles the first time we met. But after that he avoided seeing me at all. He knew very well the other party was responsible for the accident, yet he hardly did anything. He simply waited to collect his money. He was so irresponsible that I decided to dismiss him. And he made me pay him $770.

When I was about 12, I had an enemy, a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings(缺点). Week by week her list grew: I was very thin, I wasn’t a good student, I talked too much, I was too proud, and so on. I tried to hear all this as long as I could. At last, I became very angry. I ran to my father with tears in my eyes.

He listened to me quietly, thenhe asked. “Are the things she says true or not? Janet, didn’t you ever wonder what you’re really like? Well, you now have that girl’s opinion. Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay attention to the other things she said.”

I did as he told me. To my great surprise, I discovered that about half the things were true. Some of them I couldn’t change (like being very thin), but a good number I could—and suddenly I wanted to change. For the first time I go to fairly clear picture of myself.

I brought the list back to Daddy. He refused to take it.“That’s just for you,” he said.“You know

better than anyone else the truth about yourself. But you have to learn to listen, not just close your ears in anger and feeling hurt. When something said about you is true, you’ll find it will be of help to you. Our world is full of people who think they know your duty. Don’t shut your ears. Listen to them all, but hear the truth and do what you know is the right thing to do.”

Daddy’s advice has returned to me at many important moments. In my life, I’ve never had a better piece of advice.
