Today I went to Sam’s school in the UK. It was really different from my school in China. Girls wore grey skirts and white shirts, boys wore grey trousers, and everyone wore the school tie.

Some of Sam’s lessons were a bit strange for me. We were reading Shakespeare in the English lesson, and there were quite some old words like ―thou‖ and ―thee‖ to mean ―you‖. In history we studied 20th Century China. It was strange hearing a foreign side of history—and hearing English people trying to say all our Chinese names!

Classes were also a lot more relaxed than in China. Teachers were called ―sir‖ or ―miss‖, everyone shouted answers and raised their hands in classes. It was more like a debate than a class. A bell rang at the end of each lesson and everyone jumped up to go to the next class.

At break we bought potato chips and cookies in the dining room. Lunch was later than in China—at 1 o’clock. We had big plates of pie with carrots. For dessert there was hot sweet rice called rice pudding.

It was good that I’d had an excellent lunch, because at Sam’s school Monday afternoons are taken up with sports.

I played my first game of netball—a bit like basketball, but with some differences. Luckily I’d had a quick look in the rule book before I tried to join in the game. Here's one very simple but lifechanging advice that I first heard from Brian Tracy. Cut down on the TV at night by just one hour. Instead, use that hour to read books that could improve your life.

If you're a salesman, google for the best and most useful books on improving your sales. This applies (适用) to all fields, not just the work-related (与工作相关的) ones. Maybe you want to improve your health, become a more energetic person. Or maybe you want to improve your study, your relations or perhaps do some personal development.

One hour a day is not much. But if you read for one hour a day on weekdays, that's about 260 hours a year. That's a large number of books and a lot of useful advice.

If you follow the ideas, who knows what great things and feelings could come into your life.

Also, all that information and advice will start to open up your mind. You will start to see more chances in your life.

Now, you might think something like this: 1. I really don't have the money...

Answer: Visit your public library or search the database (数据库). Or look for books that are used in places like amazon.com.

2. I really don't have the time...

Answer: Buy audiobooks and listen to them in the car while driving to and from work. Or copy them to your MP3-player and listen while riding your bike /bus to work or school. Recently selling audiobooks through MP3-downloads has become popular...

Shut off the TV a little earlier and start reading. 51. What is Brian Tracy’s lifechanging advice about? A. Watching TV.

In many British schools, the pupils usually wear their school uniforms to school on weekdays. However, recently the students at LVS Ascot Junior School in England wore something quite different. What they wore was what people wear when they go to bed — pyjamas (睡衣). They did this not only for fun, but for a local charity called Christopher’s Smile.

Christopher’s Smile was set up in 2008 by Karen & Kevin Capel whose only son Christopher died of cancer at a young age. The students of Grade 6 at LVS Ascot Junior School also wanted to do something for the sick children. It’s easier to agree than disagree. The following tips(建议) can help keep disagreements constructive (建设性的). Don’t make it personal.

If you get upset, it can help to remember that you’re mad at the person’s idea, not the person. Never criticize the other person’s idea.

Instead of saying ―That’s a stupid idea!‖, try:―I don’t agree, and here’s why.‖ Never shout loudly and you’ll have a much better chance of getting your idea across. Use “I” statements to communicate how you feel and what you think.

Using ―you‖ statements can sound argumentative For example, telling your mom ―You always remind me about my chores when I have a lot of homework‖ has a very different tone (语气) from ―I’m under pressure because I have a lot of homework tonight. Can I do those chores tomorrow?‖

Listen to the other point of view.

When the other person is talking, try to stop thinking about why you disagree or what you’ll say next. Instead, focus on what’s being said. When it’s your turn to talk, repeat any key points the other person made to show you have paid attention to what was said. Then calmly express why you disagree. Stay calm.

This is the most important thing you can do to keep a conversation go on well. 66. What does the underlined word ―focus ‖ mean in the third paragraph?

67. What should we do when the other person is talking according to the passage? A. Think about why we disagree. B. Pay attention to what he’s saying. C. Think about what we’ll say next. D. Expresses our own idea to him. 68. Which is the right way to show that you disagree with someone?

A. I’m afraid I disagree with you. B. Your idea sounds terrible. C. You always ask me many questions. D. Your idea is quite wrong.

69. How many tips does the writer list in the passage?

A. Three. B. Four. C. Five. D. Six. 70. What does the passage mainly talk about? A. Discussion about disagreements. B. Attitude towards disagreements.

C. Opinions about disagreements. D. Tips to show disagreements. 【

―All right then — just one more piece…‖ Words every girl has said when they are faced with the delicious cheesecake. Of course, many of us know we may eat the whole thing in the end.

It isn’t just girls. Most of us find it hard to say ―no‖ to something attractive. However, scientists now say that willpower is very important to success and a happy life.

Scientists in different countries have been studying the effects of willpower on people’s lives for a long time. The results are similar, according to an article on February 7 in the Guardian, a famous British newspaper.

In one experiment, scientists told young children that they could either have a marshmallow (圆形软糖) now, or two marshmallows in 15 minutes. Waiting obviously needed more willpower. Scientists then continued studying the children as they grew up. They wanted to see if some children always had stronger willpower. They also wanted to see how having stronger willpower affected their lives.

Years later, scientists found that the children who had waited for two marshmallows were all healthier, happier and richer adults. Oppositely, the children who had shown weaker willpower at that young age were more likely to be in low-paid jobs, to be overweight, to have social problems.

But there is hope, Roy F Baumeister, an American social psychology (心理学) professor (教授) told the Guardian. Baumeister says we can train our willpower just like we train our muscles. Even a little practice can strengthen our overall self-control if we do it regularly.

You could start by making yourself stand up straight, speaking in complete sentences, or using a computer mouse with the other hand. Scientists have found that people who manage to change little habits often perform much better in laboratory willpower tests.

Like muscles, willpower can ―get tired‖. Don’t try to do too many things at the same time, or when you don’t have enough energy, for example when you are ill. If you already feel tired, you can try to recharge (恢复) your willpower with a good night’s sleep and by eating well. 30. The example of a girl eating cheesecake is used to ______. A. prove that girls have weak willpower

B. introduce the topic of willpower to the readers

C. show that cheesecake is especially attractive to girls D. show the connection between willpower and success 31. What can we infer from the experiment?

A. The scientists had already known the results before the experiment.

B. It showed that willpower is the most important to success and a happy life. C. The children who chose to wait were more likely to be successful in their lives. D. The children who chose only one marshmallow at first had stronger willpower. 32. Which of the following is NOT mentioned about the training of willpower? A. you should have a goal every day. B. Good rest and proper diet can help.

C. Willpower needs to be exercised regularly. D. Keep willpower from being used too much. 33. What is the article mainly about?

A. How willpower and muscles are similar and how they can be trained. B. How willpower affects people’s lives and how it is similar to muscles. C. How willpower is important to success and how we can make it stronger. D. How willpower is connected with success and how they affect each other.

Almost every Chinese person can recite the two lines of the famous poem. ― Every grain on the plate comes from hard work (谁知盘中餐粒粒皆辛苦)‖. But sadly, many of us don’t actually get the real meaning of these lines: Don’t waste food.

A CCTV program, News One Plus One, reported that food Chinese people throw away every year is enough to feed 200 million people for a year.

Do we have too much food? No, According to the UN World Food Program, there were 925 million hungry people around the world in 2010. especially in developing countries. Six million children die of hunger every year.

Chinese people are well known for being generous (慷慨的). Many even feel that they lose face if their guests have eaten all the food on the table.

Luckily, a number of people have realized the importance of saving food. Last November, Li Hong, a waitress in a restaurant in Nanjing, got fired (开除) because she took some leftover (剩余的) food home for her son. Many people stood by her side and agreed that it was not right to waste food.

What should we do in our daily lives to waste less food. Here are some tips:

1. Do not order(定购) too much in a restaurant. Only order what you want to eat. If you cannot eat all the food you ordered, take the rest of it home.

2. Don’t be too picky(挑剔的)about food. Some food may not taste great. But your body needs it.

3. Keep an eye on what food you have at home. Don’t buy too much, especially for vegetables and fruit.

61. According to News One Plus One, Chinese people __________. A. save food enough to feed 200 million people for a year. B. throw away lots of food every year.

C. get enough food to feed millions of people every year. D. have to feed 200 million hungry people every year. 62. In the third paragraph, we know that _________.

A. we have too much food to feed people in the world. B. there were 925 million people in developing countries. C. because of hunger, six million children die every year. D. there are only a few people getting hungry every year.

63. In the fourth and fifth paragraphs, we can conclude (得出结论) that _________.

A. all Chinese people are generous. B. Chinese people always waste food.

C. Li Hong got fired because she wasted food.

D. everyone should get into the habit of saving food. 64. What should we do to save food in our daily lives?

A. When we order too much food in a restaurant, just take the leftover food home. B. Eat more food that doesn’t taste great. C. We should not buy vegetables and fruit.

D. We should keep an eye on the food we like. 65. What’s the main topic of the passage?

A CCTV program, News One Plus One, reported that food Chinese people throw away every year is enough to feed 200 million people for a year.

Six million children die of hunger every year. Chinese people are well known for being generous (慷慨的). Many even feel that they lose face if their guests have eaten all the food on the table. 64.【解析】选A。 If you cannot eat all the food you ordered, take the rest of it home.

65.【解析】选A。

Parents often believe that they have a good relationship(关系) with their teenagers. But during the summer vacation in 2011, Joanna and Henry noticed a change in their son: suddenly he seemed to be talking far more to his friends than to his parents. ―the door to his room is always shut,‖ Joanna noted.

Tina and Mark noticed similar changes in their 14-year-old daughter. ―She used to sit with me on the sofa and talk,‖ said Mark. ―Now we joke that she does this only when she wants something. Sometimes she wants to be treated like a little girl and sometimes like a young lady. The problem is finding out which time is which.‖

Before age 11, children like to tell their parents what’s on their minds. ―In fact, parents are first on the list,‖ said Michael Riera, writer of Uncommon Sense for Parents with Teenagers. ―This completely changes during the ten years,‖ Riera explained. ―They talk to their friends first, then maybe their teachers, and their parents last.‖

Parents who know what’s going on in their teenagers’ lives are in the best position to help them. To break down the wall of silence, parents should create chance to understand what their children want to say, and try to find ways to talk and write to them. And they must give their children a mental(心灵) break, for children also need freedom, though young. All the wisdom of the times, all the stories that have delighted mankind for centuries, are easily and cheaply available to all of us in books, but we must know how to make use of this treasure. The unluckiest people in the world are those who have never discovered how satisfying it is to read good books.

I’m very interested in people and finding out about them. Some of the most amazing people I’ve met could only be found in a writer’s imagination, then in this book, and then, again, in my imagination. I’ve found in books new friends and new worlds.

Reading is fun, not because the writer is telling you something, but because it makes your mind work. Your own imagination works along with the writer’s or even goes beyond his. Your experience, compared with his, brings you to the same or different conclusions, and your ideas develop as you understand his.

Every book stands by itself, like a one-family house, but books in a library are like houses in a city. Although they are separate (分开的),in some way they are connected with each other. The same ideas, or related (相关的) ones, appear in different places; the human problems that repeat themselves in life repeat themselves in books, but with different solutions (解决方法) according to different times. Books influence each other. They connect the past, the present and the future and have their own generations (age groups), like families. Wherever you start reading, you connect yourself with one of the families of ideas, and in the end, you not only find out about the world and the people in it, you find out yourself, too.

Reading can only be fun if you expect it to be. If you concentrate on (专注于) books somebody tells you ―ought‖ to read, you probably won’t have fun. But if you put down a book you don’t like and try another till you find one that means something to you, and then relax with it ,you will almost certainly have a good time — and if you become, as a result of reading, better, wiser, kinder, or more gentle, you won’t suffer during the process.

27. Which of the following ideas may the writer of this article agree with? A. You will never meet amazing people in your life unless you read.

B. You think actively instead of getting facts passively when reading. C. You will get much delight from any book that you are told to read. D. You can relax yourself by reading because it involves little thinking. 28. What can we learn from Paragraph 4?

A. We can often find something connected with ourselves in books. B. Different writing at different things share the same characteristics.

C. The same problems-will appear in different books with similar solution. D. Reading books which are written for your generation is more helpful to you. 29. What’s the writer’s purpose of writing this article? A. To advise us to enjoy ourselves by reading. B. To encourage us to make full use of libraries. C. To encourage us to find solutions in books.

D. To advise us to discuss books with other people.

The unluckiest people in the world are those who have never discovered how satisfying it is to read good books.

29. 【解析】选A。

What do people do with their old, out-of-date but still useful computers? Most people don’t know what to do with them. Many old computers are put away in homes. Many more are simply thrown out with the rubbish.

At last, some companies are thinking of ways to bring down the number of old computers. Sony has agreed to help recycle old Sony products. Dell, Hewlett- Packard and other companies now also take back some old computers.

In some countries, laws are being passed, too. Computer companies will have to collect and recycle their old products. And 70% of computer waste must be recycled. The idea behind the laws is that computer companies themselves should pay for it. That will encourage them to make computers that are cheaper to repair and upgrade (升级).

Yet while many people are throwing away good computers, others can’t afford them at all.

Thousands of organizations are working to solve this problem. They collect and repair old computers. Some also teach others how to repair computers.

Space travel is nothing new. The first spacecraft with a human was sent up into space in 1961. Since then, people have not only traveled to space, but many of them have also lived there in space stations for some time.

The Soviet Union (前苏联) sent to first space station into space in 1971. This space station was called Salyut 1. Salyut 1 was designed as a place where people could live while they observed space and did experiments. The first group of astronauts lived there for 23 days. The Soviet Union went on to make seven more Salyut space stations. At about the same time, the United States built its own space station, called Skylab.

Astronauts visited and often lived in these space stations for a short time. However, it wasn’t until the late 1980s when the Soviet Union sent the Mir space station that people began to live in space for a longer time. Mir stayed in space from 1989 until 2001, when it was decided that the space station was too old and no longer safe to live in.

Living in space stations seems to be fun, but astronauts face many problems. One of them is food. All the meals on space stations are put together on Earth and sent there by space shuttle. Because the food has to last a long time (sometimes up to three months), a lot of it has to be stored in cans. The space station does not have a fridge, but it has a cool room to keep fruit and vegetables fresh. Astronauts also eat many other foods such as dried meat that do not need special care.

Without the help of gravity, sitting down to eat can be tough. Astronauts sometimes have to fix themselves to the wall while eating. They also have to be very careful so that food does not float away.

31. Which of the following has the closet meaning to the underlined word ― observed ‖ in Paragraph 2?

A. Discovered. B. Checked. C. Watched. D. Fixed. 32. What can we infer (推断) from the passage?

A. Astronauts can never have a chance to eat fresh food when they live in space stations. B. The Soviet Union sent a total of 9 space stations into space in the 1970s and 1980s. C. Astronauts could live in the Mir space station for no more than three weeks. D. Space travel has quite a long history of more than 60 years. 33. What is the best title of this passage? A. Exploring Space. B. Space Travel C. Living in Space. D. Space Stations.

During the 1800s, African Americans worked long days in the fields of the American South. They sang songs that they had brought from Africa while working. One person sang a line. Then a

group of workers repeated it. The songs’ words told of the hardships (艰苦) that people suffered. They clapped their hands and stomped (跺) their feet to the music.

In the 1860s, the music changed greatly. African American music took new forms. It was also influenced by dance music, which had great rhythm (节奏). Banjos (班卓琴) became popular. A blues singer usually sang a line and then played the banjo in reply. By the early 1900s, the guitar had taken the place of the banjo in blues music.

The blues music has many obvious characteristics. One of them is that the musical notes (音调) are often ―bent‖. That is, they are changed slightly to give a song more strength.

Lyrics are the words of a song. Blues lyrics describe every day life. The lyrics are often about the relationships between men and women. They tell about sadness and overwork. They tell about finding and losing live, having money or being poor, being happy or sad and lonely. They almost always use the rhythms of everyday speech. A group of blues lyrics usually has three lines. The second line repeats the first line. The third line has different words.

By the 1940s, large numbers of African Americans moved to Chicago. There, a new kind of ―Chicago‖ blues began. The new music was excellent dance music. Chicago blues led to the birth of a new music style — rock and roll.

34. This passage is mainly about . A. the blues music B. the life of African Americans C. the blues lyrics D. the rhythms of different music 35. What information does the passage NOT provide? A. How the blues music developed as time went by. B. What the blues lyrics are mostly about.

C. When African Americans moved to the American South. D. How long the banjo was popular in the blues history.

36.Which of the following is the most likely taken from a blues song? A. You have to help me. I’ll die if you don’t. You have to help me. B. You have to help me. You have to help me. I’ll die if you don’t. C. I’ll die if you don’t. You have to help me. You have to help me. D. I’ll die if you don’t help me. You have to help me. Please help me. 37. What fact does the passage lead you to believe?

A. African Americans sang songs after a long day’s work to relax in the 1800s. B. The blues singers in the 1860s usually played the guitar while singing songs. C. It is not difficult to tell the blues music from others from its musical notes. D. Rock and roll was the most popular blues music in Chicago in the 1950s.

Started in 1636, Harvard(哈佛) University is the oldest of all the colleges and universities in the United States. Yale, Princeton Columbia and Dartmouth were opened soon after Harvard. In the earlier years these schools were nearly the same. Only young men went to college. All the students studied the same subjects, and everyone learned Latin and Greek. Little was known about science. And few people knew that one kind of school could teach everything that was known about the world. When the students graduated, most of them became ministers or teachers. In 1782, Harvard started a medical school for young men who wanted to become doctors. Some people think only school children do not agree with their parents, however, it is not true. Communication(沟通) is a problem for parents and children of all ages. If it's hard for you to communicate with your parents, don't worry about it. Here are some suggestions for you to bridge generation gap(代沟).

Don't argue with your parents. Don’t get to your parents when you are angry. Your parents probably won’t consider your ideas if you are shouting at them. You can’t express yourself well if you are angry. Go to someplace to cool off. Make sure you understand why you are unhappy. Then think about what you want to say to your parents. If you don’t think you can speak to them at the moment, try writing a letter.

Try to reach a compromise(和解). Perhaps you and your parents disagree on something. You can keep your disagreement and try your best to accept each other. Michael's mother didn’t agree with him about buying a car. They argued over it, but finally they came to a compromise. Michael bought the car, but only drove it on certain days.

Of course your parents might refuse to compromise on something. In these situations, it is especially important to show love and respect(尊敬) to them. Showing respect will keep your relationship strong.

Talk about your values. The values of your parents are probably different from those of your own. Tell your parents what you care about, and why. Understanding your values might help them see your purposes in life.

A good relationship with your parents can make you a better and happier person. It is worth having a try.

46. From the passage we know ______ have a communication problem. A. parents and children of all ages B. children and other people C. parents and their school children D. teachers and their students 47. Your parents probably will consider your ideas if you________. A. don’t express yourself well B. speak to them politely C. don’t write a letter to them D. don’t talk to them

48. The underlined phrase ―cool off‖ in the passage means ________. A. make yourself happy

B. make yourself' quiet and relaxed C. become angry D. go away

49. If you and your parents have a generation gap, you’d better _______. A. keep away from them

B. agree with them all the time

C. have a talk with them and make your values known to them D. argue with them

50. Most of the passage tells us that _________. A. there are serious problems in families today B. parents should love their children

通读全文,不难看出,从第二段开始就是讲述的“Here are some suggestions for you to bridge generation gap(代沟).”

由文中的第二句“In China you must never give a clock to a Chinese person, because the sound of the word for ―clock‖ is similar to the sound of ―death‖.” 短文的第一段讲述了中国的礼品赠送风俗,第一段的第三句“Also, don’t wrap a present in white, black, or blue paper”,即讲述了在中国不能用白,黑和蓝三个颜色包裹礼物。短文的第三段,讲述了德国的赠送风俗,最后一句“Don’t wrap your presents in white, brown, or black paper. ”,可见,在德国也是不能用白,黑和蓝三个颜色包裹礼物。所以选择C。 33. 【解析】选B。词义猜测题。因为讲述俄罗斯的风俗时,提到“give an odd number of them (one. three, five, etc.)”,而且所列举的例子one. three, five, etc.

第一个就是“don’t take her red roses because it means you are in love with her.”,可见不能带红色玫瑰去女主人家参加聚会,因为那代表着爱上了女主人。
