If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?

According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brine power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter.

This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles.

The study also found the effect is greater the younger people learn a second language.

A team led by Dr Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.

Scans showed that grey matter density(密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference.

“Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changes by the experience of learning a second language,” said the scientists.

It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.

Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills.” Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible,” he said. “You are actually going beyond language and have understanding of different ideas.” The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the age of 2 and 34. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “ Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists.

B. prove that one needs more practice when he (she) is learning a language C. to show the importance of using the language when you learn the language D. make people believe language learning helps grey matter work well 38. We may know from the scientific findings that________.

A. the earlier you start to learn a second language, the higher the grey matter density is

B. there is no difference between a later second language learner and one who doesn’t know a second

language

C. the experience of learning a second language has effect on people’s brain D. the ability of learning a second language is changing all the time 39. In the last two paragraphs, the author wants to tell us that _________. A. learning a second language is the same as studying maths

B. early learning of a second language helps you a great deal in studying other subjects C. Italian is the best choice for you as a second language

D. you’d better choose the ages between 2 and 34 to learn a second language

Getting paid to talk about the World Cup is a great job. I' m not a football commentator (评论员), though --just an English teacher in Japan.

I came to Japan two years ago, and didn' t think I would stay, but Japan has that effect on you. People often end up living here longer than they planned. I think it' s best to teach, in a bigger city where there are other foreigners to mix with, rather than a small town where English teachers often complain of feeling like a goldfish in a bowl. Many people choose to live in Tokyo, of course, which is good for tile nightlife factor. But I' d say that for general quality of living, cities of neither too large nor too small, like Sapporo where I live, are better choices.

I teach English privately, which means I' m my own boss. If you want to devote yourself to private teaching, it's well worth doing a TEFL course first, because your lessons will be much better for it. The problem with private teaching is finding students; it took me a year to build up a full schedule (日程表) of private lessons, so I started out teaching in schools part-time.

Most of my foreign friends here work full-time for big English conversation schools. The salary is fine to live on, but whether you can save money depends on how much going out and traveling you do here.

The schools are reluctant to take time off -- even teachers with tickets for the England-Argentina game had trouble getting the day off.

40. From the passage we know in Japan the writer likes to live in ________. A. Tokyo B. a small town C. a city of middle size D. a big city

41. According to the writer, one had better ________ first to do private teaching better. A. take a TEFL course B. decide his or her own lessons C. find students D. build up a full schedule

42. The underlined sentence in the second paragraph implies that ________. A. there are many foreigners in Japan B. Japan is good for nightlife

C. they can teach English privately in Japan

D. Japan has something more attractive than expected

43. The underlined word \ A. kind B. unwilling C. free D. careless

There are two kinds of people in the world. Those of the first kind are born idlers(游手好闲者), taking interest in nothing. It seems what they live for is to pass time idly. They simply don't know why they have to do so, nor will they bother to ask. The other kind are those who take things seriously and never wish to idle away their life. But only a part of the second group are eager enough to make success. All the others fail to make enough effort to make their dreams come true.

Why do things so happen to them? What are the reasons?

I later find out that some people are determined. They are \light and heat. But that's not the case with others. They may be fuels but not igniters. As pieces of wood or coal, they need a match or a lighter to make them burn so that their energy can be released to give off light and heat. The majority of people need some igniter to light them. Thus igniter becomes a must for those people to succeed. Unless a suitable igniter comes their way, they will always remain idle like cold unused firewood or coal.

Fortunately, such an igniter is not difficult to meet. One may find it in an instructive book, a film story, a few words of a close friend, some advice of a good teacher, a pleasant journey, or an unexpected love. Any of these, coming at the right time, can serve as an igniter to start one's enthusiasm for learning or for a better career, to turn him from a passive state of waiting to an active state of pursuing, to lend him strength to go ahead bravely. In that case, what he has pre- pared for years will be quickly turned into fruitful reality. Such an igniter may turn up of itself, but most likely we have to find it ourselves. Never let a chance slide away, for it is the key to your success.

48. Who take things seriously but may not be able to succeed in this passage?

A. Idlers. B. Igniters. C. Fuels. D. Lighters. 49. What does the writer value most in order to succeed? A. Storing a lot of energy.

B. Great interest in everything.

C. An igniter coming at the right time. D. Wonderful dreams about a bright future.

50. What is the writer's purpose in writing this article? A. The writer describes two kinds of people.

B. The writer encourages people to find chances to succeed. C. The writer praises those who work hard. D. The writer tries to make fun of idlers.

51. What's the meaning of the underlined word \

A. Dreaming about success. B. Trying to achieve something. C. Preparing for the worst. D. Hoping to be a leader.

Our spiritual intelligence quotient(精神智商), or SQ, helps us understand ourselves, and live fuller, happier lives.

While we’re all born with SQ, most of us don’t even realize that we have it. Fortunately, you don’t have to sign up for classes to learn how to improve your SQ. Here are some simple steps that can lead you to this new level of understanding.

Sit Quietly. The process of developing spiritual intelligence begins with solitude(独处) and silence. To tune in to your spirit, you have to turn down the volume(强度) in your busy, noisy, complicated life and force yourself to do nothing at all. Start small by creating islands for silence in your day. In the car, instead of reading or doing something else, use the time to think. At work, shut the door to our office between meetings, take a few breaths and let them out very, very slowly. Enjoy the stillness in your home after the kids are finally in bed.

Step Outside. For many people, nature sets their spirit free. Go outside to watch a beautiful sunset. If you are walking with your dog, take the time to admire flowers in bloom; follow the flight of birds; watch clouds float overhead.

Ask Questions of Yourself. Ask open-ended questions, such as “What am I feeling?” “What are my choices?” or “Where am I heading?” But don’t expect an answer to arrive through some supernatural form or e-mail. “Rarely do I get an immediate answer to my question,” says Reverend Joan Carter, a Presbyterian minister in Sausalito, California. “But later that day I suddenly find myself thinking about a problem in a perspective(角度) I never considered before.”

Trust Your Spirit. While most of us rely on gut feeling(第六感觉) to realize danger, spiritual intelligence pushes us, not away from, but towards some action that will lead to a greater good.

52. The passage is mainly about ______. A. SQ can benefit your life B. SQ can be improved

C. the relationship between your SQ and your life D. advantages and disadvantages of SQ

53. In order to “tune in to your spirit”, what you can’t do? A. Keep to your working site. B. Show down your pace of life. C. Get you spirit relaxed. D. Keep seated quietly.

54. The author mentions the example of Reverend Joan Carter to show that _______. A. there are no immediate answers to your questions B. e-mail can’t keep working out a problem

C. the more questions you ask, the better answers you’ll get

D. changing your way of thinking might help you solve a problem

55. It can be inferred that we can know that the most important thing to improve your SQ is ______. A. a peaceful mind B. deep thought C. spare time and hobbies D. good spirits 词汇

书面表达:

Nowadays, more and more Chinese people can use English in their daily communication. Some people even speak Chinese mixed with English words. Recently, there is a discussion about the phenomenon in our class.

Some people think it ridiculous. In their opinion, it makes no sense in helping people learn English.

However, others are fond of this way. They think that it is of special help in expressing themselves when communicating with other people.

In my opinion, if you really want to improve your English, you’d better speak all in English, though not very fluently. You should read more, listen more and speak more. What’s more, you must remember more words because vocabulary is the basis. Only in this way can you freely communicate with people.
