第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)

第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

What makes one person have more accidents than another? Most people would say that it’s to do with taking risks. Take fewer risks and you’ll have fewer accidents. But is taking risks really a matter of choice?

Some experts believe that whether or not you take risks in life has a lot to do with your upbringing (养育,培养) and, some believe, with your birth order. Parents

3

are often stricter and more careful with their first child, and so first-born children tend to grow up taking fewer risks. Parents are often more relaxed with a second or third child, so these children tend to take more risks.

But why do children tend to have more accidents than adults? During childhood the body grows very quickly. There seem to be periods in these years when our brain and body are at different stages of development. Our arms are longer than the brain thinks they are, so we knock things over; our legs are longer than the brain believes, so we trip over easily.

Besides, the research suggests the more time a child spends watching TV, the less they are developing their physical co-ordination (协调) skills. It gives the child a false sense of how the world works and of how much danger it contains. If a child doesn’t run around a lot, they don’t begin to understand that the world is full of physical risks.

So, what about adults? Some studies have shown that life in this world is a little difficult for left-handed people. As we know, we live in a right-handed world. Everything --- from cars to door handles, from children’s toys to engineering tools and equipment --- is made by right-handed people. Therefore, left-handed children and adults are more likely to have accidents because the modern world is not designed for them.

21. Different from the first child, a second one tends to _______.

A. become ill more easily

B. have more accidents

C. learn more quickly

D. make more friends

22. By saying “Our arms are longer than the brain thinks they are”, the author means that ________.

A. it is very easy for children to take risks

B. our brain develops faster than the arms do

C. children often do more exercises than adults

D. it is important to give children a balanced diet

4

23. Which of the following may have more accidents?

A. Right-handed people.

B. Children who often run around.

C. Left-handed people.

D. Children who seldom watch TV.

B

Dear Sir / Madam,

It worried me a lot when I heard of the plan to cut down St John’s Wood to make a car park for shoppers. Although I agree that the town is short of car parks, this idea would be improper.

In the first place, the wood is an area of natural beauty. There are many ancient trees of an unusual kind. I often go there for a picnic or just to relax at weekends. The wood is, without doubt,a natural home for birds, animals and insects. If the trees were cut down, many species would be lost. Furthermore, the wood is right in the centre of a heavilypollutedpart of town. The treeshelp to make the air cleaner. The council (地方议会)says they are worried about global warming, yet they wish to cut down trees which help reduce the build-up of gases that lead to global warming because they feed on carbon dioxide. Besides, that area also suffers from high noise levels frompassing trucks and the railway line. The trees help reduce the noise levels and do a lot of good to the whole environment.

In my opinion, cutting down the wood would be stupid and pointless. A car park may well attract shoppers to the town and increase the shopkeepers’ trade. However, a beautiful part of our town would be destroyed. I would be very interested in hearing what your other readers think.

Yours faithfully,

Roland Chang

24. What has made Roland Chang feel worried?

A. That the town is short of car parks.

B. That shoppers park their cars badly.

5

C. That there are few parks in the town.

D. That a wood in the town might disappear.

25. Paragraph 2, Roland Chang mainly talks about .

A. the importance of the wood

B. the history of the town

C. the species in the wood

D. global warming

26 Roland Chang wrote the letter mainly to .

A. introduce a park

B. make a suggestion

C. express thankfulness

D. send his congratulations

27.To whom is Roland Chang probably writing?

A. A magazine.

B. A close friend.

C. The shopkeepers.

D. The town council.

As computers become all the more popular in China, Chinese people are increasingly relying on computer keyboards to input Chinese characters. But if they use the computer too much, they may end up forgetting the exact strokes(笔画)of each Chinese character when writing on paper. Experts suggest people, especially students, write by hand more.

Do you write by hand more or type more? In Beijing, students start using a computer as early as primary school. And computer dependence is more wide-spread among university students. Almost all their writings are typed on a computer.

All the students interviewed say they usually use a computer.

It’s faster and easier to correct if using a computer. And that’s why computers are being used more and more often to modern education. But when people are taking stock in computers increasingly, problems appear.

“When I’m writing with a pen, I find I often can’t remember how to write a character, though I feel I’m familiar with it.”

“I’m not in the mood to write when faced with a pen and paper.”

Many students don’t feel this is something to worry about. Now that it’s more convenient and efficient to write on a computer, why bother to handwrite?

Many educators think differently. Shi Liwei, the headmaster of a famous primary

6

school in the capital said “Chinese characters enjoy both practical and aesthetic(审美的) value. But those characters typed with computer keyboards only maintain their practical value. All the artistic beauty of the characters is lost. And handwriting contains the writer’s emotion. Through one’s handwriting, people can get to know one’s thinking and personality. Beautiful w riting will give people a better first impression of them.”

To encourage students to handwrite more, many primary schools in Beijing have made writing classes compulsory(必修的)and in universities, some professors are asking students to turn in their homework and essays written by hand.

28. Which of the following can BEST serve as the title of the passage?

A. The Importance of Handwriting and Typing

B. To Type or To Hand Write

C. Writing By Computer Will Replace Writing By Hand

D. Practical and Aesthetic Value of Chinese Characters

29. The students interviewed prefer to write using a computer mainly because .

A. they are usually asked to e-mail their homework and essays

B. computers have become a trend and fashion in China

C. they find it not easy to remember how to write a character

D. they can correct the mistakes they make quickly and conveniently

30. The underlined expression “taking stock in” in the fourth paragraph probably means .

A. becoming crazy about

B. getting bored with

C. getting dependent on

D. looking forward to

31. We can draw the conclusion from the passage that .

A. more and more students will give up writing on a computer

B. writing by hand will give way to typing by computer one day

C. more and more students will pay attention to handwriting

D. the typed article better expresses one’s emotion and quality

How to Improve Vocabulary Fast

Your vocabulary refers to the words in a language you are familiar with. We should learn some ways to expand it.

Read every day. 36 Choose reading material that is slightly above your level and keep a dictionary with you to look up words you do not know.

37 If you do not meet with an unfamiliar word in your daily reading, use your dictionary to search for one.

Learn the correct definition and pronunciation for each new word.Pronunciation is as important as definition because in order to add a word to your active vocabulary, you must be able to use it in speech.

Elaborate(详尽阐述)on the meaning of the word. Use imagery and personal expe rience. If you have just learned that the word “stubborn” , think about the neighbor who will not lend you his car. 38

Use your new word in speech and in writing. E-mail your sister about how your

9

cat is stubborn about sleeping on your pillow. 39 But the more you use it, the more fluent you will become in its use. Soon it will be a regular part of your active vocabulary.

Tell everyone you are trying to increase your vocabulary.Encourage them to ask you what your latest word is 40 The more you explain the meaning of a word to someone, the more likely you are to remember it.

A. Find a new word every day.

B. The vocabulary can be increased.

C. Your vocabulary contains the words you understand.

D. The more often you read, the faster your vocabulary can grow.

E. Or let them ask for the definition of a new word you have used.
