Playing is serious business for children. In fact, it’s what they do best! Ask them why they do it, and kids will probably say, “Because it’s fun!” But it’s much more than that. It’s also good for them.

Scientists say that babies begin learning through playing. They use their five senses to get to know their new world. Touching allows them to discover how different things feel. Brightly coloured toys and clothing help develop a baby’s sense of sight.

When small children choose which toy to play with, they begin developing their abilities in making decisions.

Children love toys that allow them to use their imagination. Sometimes an empty box is

5

more fun than a high-tech(高科技的) toy. That’s because a box can become anything a child imagines it to be.

Crayons, paints and Play-Doh(彩色塑泥)are also good because they allow children to create. Traditional building blocks teach them important pre-math skills like problem-solving.

Playing doesn’t become any less important after children start school. Many valuable lessons about life are learned on the school playground. Kids learn how to share, take turns and play by the rules.

71. It is very good for children to play. 72. Babies learn nothing through playing.

73. Touching helps develop a baby’s sense of sight.

74. Small children begin developing their abilities in making decisions by choosing toys. 75. A high-tech toy is always more fun than an empty box for children. 76. Paints are also good for children because they allow children to create. 77. Playing is no longer important for children after they start school.

There are two official languages spoken in Canada: French and English. Many people can speak both English and French. More than 60% of Canadians speak English as their language. About 25% of Canadians speak French. In one province(省份)of Canada where French is the common language, the programmes on TV and radios as well as the teaching in schools are all done in French. As it is known to all, Canada has one–third of the world's supply of fresh water. It has many great lakes. There are five great lakes in the south, and there are many others, especially in the north. It is also rich in natural resources, such as coal, oil, natural gas of which Canadians make use to produce energy.

6

People of northern Canada are called Inuit(因纽特人), who came from Asia and settled in Canada about 4,000 years ago. They used to travel around from place to place with teams of dogs which pulled their baggage. Now they live in settlements. There are about 2,500 Inuit in all. Hello, everybody. I’m Linda. How happy I have moved to a new flat. Now the price of

the flat in Beijing has fallen down. I have looked for a suitable flat for one year, and at last I paid ¥2 million for it. How lucky I am! I think it is different from the one before. It has 3 bedrooms, 1 sitting room, and a big garden. My mother said she would plant some flowers in it. Behind it you will see a peaceful river. Every day you can enjoy the river views. You will not hear the noise because it is far away from the airport. But it is not very convenient for me to go shopping at weekends because there are not many department stores or shopping malls. I have a lot of friends and they helped me move the furniture on the removal day. Then, on National Day we had a party in my new flat. What a pleasant life I have now!
