A One might compare the Hollywood of the 1930s and 1940s to an empire, and the great film producers to its rulers. We could like the studios and their chiefs to the Mogul Empire which lasted from the early 16th to the mid-19th century in India. The ruler, the Great Mogul, exercised tremendous power and lived in a great place of impressive beauty. The second mogul empire, ruled by the moguls of Hollywood, did not survive long, but the power exercised by the great studio heads could be almost as great as that of the Great Mogul. They enjoyed almost as much wealth, and their fame was certainly more widespread. The Great Mogul could boast of having thousands of slaves, but he could not claim to control the likes of the \slaves\of the Hollywood moguls: the film stars. And even though these \thousands, the public's impression was that studios like MGM had \heaven\
What kinds of lives did those stars of yesterday live? On the surface, they were lives of extraordinary glamour and excitement, but in fact the moguls controlled them to a large extent. The aim of each studio was to make rather ordinary men and women into America's screen idols. To do this, the studio chiefs told the stars that they must not smoke or drink, decided which other stars they should go out with, said that they ought to buy a large house and enormous car, and tried to ensure that in every way, they became what the moguls believed the public wanted.
How could the film moguls tell such stars as Clark Gable and Elizabeth Taylor what they must or must not do, how they should or should not behave? Why did the stars allow it? There were two reasons. Firstly, these stars were \were looked after and protected in every way. Secondly, they had signed seven-year contracts. These contracts gave the moguls absolute power over them. The moguls could insist that a star must act in a particular film. If the star refused, he or she could be suspended without pay, and the time he or she did not work was added to the seven-year contract.
The film stars were, in a very real way, the \of the studios. The Great Mogul maintained control over his people for the sake of his own power and glory. The film chiefs exercised control for the sake of profit. They bought acting talent -- or a pretty face and they sold dreams. It may sound inhuman, this trading in people's lives, but it gives a new meaning to the words of the song: \while it lasted, but business is what it was really about.
41. The writer compares the Hollywood of the 1930s and 1940s to the Mogul Empire because the head of each _______.
A. enjoyed almost as much power as the other one in the whole world B. enjoyed almost as much power, wealth and even fame as the other one C. had as many slaves as the other one D. was loved and respected by its members
42. It can be inferred from the passage that Hollywood stars in the 1930s and 1940s _______. A. lived an extraordinarily excited and carefree life B. didn't live as fascinating a life as the public believed
C. were the idols of every American
D. made sure they lived an independent life.
43. The speaker gave the example of Clark Gable and Elizabeth Taylor to illustrate _______. A. Hollywood stars were very well paid
B. Hollywood stars were given attention by their producers C. Hollywood stars had no insurance of income
D. How the Hollywood controlling system could have worked as it did 44. Why were the film stars the \
A. Because they were controlled to earn money, power, fame for the studio. B. Because they were bought and sold as slaves. C. Because they made Hollywood famous.
D. Because they were interested in doing business in Hollywood. 45. This passage mainly discusses ________.
A. film production in Hollywood in the 1930s and 1940s B. the similarities between the Mogul Empire and Hollywood C. the true life of Hollywood stars in the 1930s and 1940s D. why Hollywood could enjoy the fame as it did
B The American baby boom after the war made unconvincing U.S. advice to poor countries that they limit their births. However, there has hardly been a year since 1957 in which birth rates did not fall in the United States and other rich countries, and in 1976 the fall was especially sharp. Both East Germany and West Germany have fewer births than they have deaths, and the United States is only temporarily able to avoid this condition because the children of the baby boom are now an exceptionally large group of married couples.
It is true that Americans do not typically plan their births to set an example for developing nations. We are more affected by women's liberation: once women see interesting and well-paid jobs as careers available, they are less willing to provide free labor for child raising. From costing nothing, children suddenly come to seem impossibly expensive. And to the high cost of children are added the uncertainties, introduced by divorce; couples are increasing to subject children to the terrible experience of marriage breakdown and themselves to the difficulty of raising a child alone.
These circumstances-women working outside the home and the instability of marriage, trend to spread with industrial society and they will affect more and more countries during the remainder of this century. Along with them goes social mobility, ambition to rise in the urban world, a main factor in bringing down the births in Europe in the 19th century.
Food shortage will happen again when the reserves resulting from the good harvests of 1976 and 1977 have been consumed. Urbanization is likely to continue, with the cities of the developing nations struggling under the weight of twice their present populations by the year 2000. The presently rich countries are approaching a stable population largely because of the changed place of women, and they incidentally are setting an example of restraint to the rest of the world. Industrial society will spread to the poor countries, and ambition will exceed resources. All this will lead to a population in the 21st century that is smaller than that was feared a few years ago. For those anxious to see world population brought under control, the news is encouraging. 46. During the years from 1957 to 1976, the birth rate of the United States _____. A. increased B. was reduced C. experiences both falls and rises D. high divorce rate
47. What influences the birth rate most in the United States is _____. A. highly paid jobs B. women's working for independence C. expenses of child raising D. high divorce rate
48. The sentence \implies that _____.
A. food and clothing for babies are becoming incredibly expensive B. prices are going up dramatically all the time
C. to raise children, women have to give up interesting and well-paid jobs D. social development has made child-raising inexpensive
49. A chief factor in bringing down the births in Europe in the 19th century is_____. A. birth control B. women’s strong desire for working C. the instability of marriage D. the changed place of women 50. The population in 21st century, according to the writer _____. A. will be smaller than a few year ago B. will not be as small as people expect C. will prove to be threat to the world
D. will not continue as serious a problem as expected
C Researchers in London and Bristol have found that men are particularly likely to give way to depression if their partners are also depressed.
The finding highlights the importance of paying attention to the partners of depressed mothers, as young children themselves vulnerable (容易受伤的) to social problems if both parents are depressed.
Researchers in London and at the University of Bristol launched their study to investigate whether family structure affects the likelihood of depression in men around the time their child is born. They looked at men from traditional families, men with children from a previous relationship, men whose partners had children by a former partner, and men who were not living with their partners.
All 7018 participants filled out a questionnaire on depression, and answered questions about their age, education level and employment status. Details about the quality of their relationships with their partners, networks of friends and previous life events were also recorded.
About 3.5 per cent of the men and 13 per cent of their partners suffered depression around the time their child was born. While men in step-families or who were not living with their partners were twice as likely to get depressed as those in traditional families, this could be explained by other factors that are more common in non-traditional families, such as poor education and relationship conflicts.
Even allowing for all these factors, however, the partners of women who were suffering from prenatal (产前的) depression were significantly more likely to become depressed themselves, the researchers report in an American Journal. Ten per cent of women who were depressed had depressed partners. For the healthy women, the figure was only 2.6 per cent.
Previous research suggests that families with two depressed parents may need special attention. A researcher in Atlanta has found that primary schoolchildren with two troubled parents have difficulty relating to their peers. \says.
51. What can we conclude from paragraphs one and two of this passage? A. Men often beat their children.
B. Depressed women often have depressed partners. C. All young children are vulnerable to social problems. D. Women with children often have depressed partners.
52. Why did researchers in London and Bristol carry out such and investigation? A. To see what kind of family environment is ideal for children to grow up in.
B. To study whether family structure affects depression in men when their child is born. C. To investigate why so many men get depressed when a child is born.
D. To see whether it is true that behind every depressed man there is a depressed woman. 53. What kind of men were NOT included as objects in the study? A. Men from traditional families.
B. Men with children from a previous relationship. C. Men who were not living with their partners. D. Men who have no children.
54. What kind of men are least likely to get depressed when their child was born? A. Men in stepfamilies.
B. Men who were not living with their partners. C. Men in traditional families. D. Men in nontraditional families.
55. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. Ten per cent of women who were depressed had depressed partners. B. 2.6 per cent of healthy women were depressed.
C. Special attention should be paid to families in which both the father and the mother were depressed.
D. Primary schoolchildren whose parents were both depressed couldn't get along well with their peers.

第二节 读写任务(共l小题,满分25分)
阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。
January 10, 2008 Dear Editor, I am writing this letter to reflect some problems I came across recently and appeal to the improvement of the service industry. This weekend I bought an English dictionary in a bookstore near my home since its cover is elaborately designed. But when I went home and carefully, I found that several pages of the dictionary have been cracked and befouled. What is worse, the misprints spread everywhere in the dictionary and seriously affect my comprehension. Since there was such damage and misprints to the dictionary, I went to the bookstore to require for a replace. But to my surprise, the staff of the bookstore turns down my request rudely and even denied the poor quality of the dictionary. Today’s fast-paced and market-oriented economy calls for much higher standard for service industry. However, to my regret, many of the commercials fail to achieve this standard and the quality of the staff needs to be improved. It’s self-evident that the poor quality of practitioners in the service industry will not only deeply disappoint customers but also hamper the development of our country’s economy. As a result, I expect your newspaper to appeal to the service industry to attach more importance to the service improvement.
Thank you for you attention! Sincerely yours Mary [写作内容]

读写任务: Dear Mary, Thank you for your letter, which the editor sent to me yesterday. In your letter, I know that you bought a dictionary with a lot of problems, and our workers in charge of the department were so rude to you, which brought me lots of trouble.
First of all, we are very sorry to have brought you so much trouble. It is our fault to give you this dictionary. If I were you, I would also complain about it. Now, we take it seriously. We will go to your house in person to make an apology for it and bring you a good dictionary if it is convenient to you.
Yes, we do need to improve our service, which is beneficial to our customers and our bookstore. We also really want a great success in our business field, so I would sincerely appreciate your advice.
If it is convenient to you, please give us some help or suggestions about our service. Thanks a lot!
Yours sincerely, John Harder The Manager
