When I was a chaplain intern(实习牧师) at UCLA Medical Center, I entered the lives of strangers at the worst possible moments. In those dark hours, when a patient was dying, I would show up, a stranger, an unfamiliar face and voice and touch. In the beginning, I dreaded those visits, viewing myself as a poor substitute for the comforting intimacy(亲密) of family and friends. I felt helpless to help.

Then I learned an important spiritual lesson from one of those strangers and never looked at life the same way again. She was dying of kidney failure, and her only hope was a transplant. Every day, 18 people in this country die waiting for an organ donation. I waited with her, and prayed with her, and finally said with a sigh, “I wish I could do something more than this.”

“You can,” she said. “You can do so much more.” At her deathbed, I made a promise that I would be a living kidney(肾) donor, as soon as time and circumstances would permit.

Over a decade later, when my children were grown, I made good on that promise. I went back to UCLA and offered my kidney to whoever needed it the most. “A stranger?” people said to me. “You would do this for a stranger?” I never understood why the same act made sense if it helped someone I knew but was shocking if it helped someone I’d never met.

“What do you know about this person who is getting your kidney?” people asked. “That he will die without it,” I answered. It was all I needed to know.

On November 5, 2010, my kidney flew on its first trip without me, nestled in the pilot’s cabin, front row seat, on its own journey. I spent less than 24 hours in the hospital, and the after-pain was sweetly familiar; it was the same pain I’d felt after my children were born by cesarean(剖腹产). My kidney was taken through that faded scar, once again granting me the privilege of giving life, in my late 50s!

I met the man who got my kidney many months later, on a bright, sunny California day when he was well enough to travel. Although we had never exchanged photos, we immediately recognized each other in the crowded restaurant. I went toward his open arms, both of us laughing and crying at the same time as we connect with life: my life, his life, all life. I will carry that feeling with me every moment that I continue to breathe, knowing it will hold me up during my own dark hours, this priceless gift that a stranger gave me in her last moments on earth. 66. It's the beginning of prime season for mosquitoes—and the transmission of West Nile virus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers advice for how to avoid getting bitten by the insects. The best way to avoid mosquito bites is to put insect repellents on exposed skin. The CDC recommends four ingredients: DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus (or PMD), and IR3535 (its latest addition to the list, sold by Avon). In addition, permethrin—which can be used on clothing, shoes, camping gear, and bed nets, but not skin—is an option. Directions on insect repellants should indicate how often they should be reapplied and for which age groups they're appropriate. Consider wearing long pants and long sleeves when weather allows it, or simply stay indoors at or near dawn and dusk, when West Nile infections tend to occur. \and avoid mosquito bites at these times,\Division of Vector-Borne Infectious Diseases. Eliminate mosquito breeding(繁殖) sites around your home. These include small pools of water such as a birdbath that's not cleaned out, water at the bottom of a flowerpot, and old buckets or tires with standing water. \breed mosquitoes,\Petersen says. Emptying such containers once or twice a week should do the trick. Put screens on your windows and doors—and repair the screens if they have holes in them. We already know that human beings and apes have much in common—not least our interest in tablet computers—but a new study by a team of international researchers published this week shows that we are far more alike than we ever thought. Apes, you see, also suffer from midlife crises.

The scientists observed 508 great apes in cages. They found that similar to humans, the apes experienced a high level of well-being in youth which fell to a bottom in midlife, before rising again in old age.

The midlife crisis usually occurs somewhere between the mid-thirties and late fifties in human beings, marked by a sense of ennui(倦怠) and ambivalence(矛盾) about what lies ahead in life. Symptoms include buying flashy cars, leaving their partners for a much younger model, or a change in career. Some regard it as a cliché of modern life, yet social scientists have not been able to explain why we experience it, and why it is such a universal phenomenon.

Until now, studies into well-being have focused solely on human beings, resulting in what the researchers call a “strictly human-centered and socioeconomic explanation” for the mid-life dip. Given that the apes feel it too, the answers may have a biological explanation rather than socioeconomic.

Using a questionnaire(问卷) adapted for non-human primates(灵长目动物), the researchers

第 7 页 共 10 页

asked zoo keepers and others who worked closely with the primates questions such as “how successful do you think the subject (the ape) is in achieving its goals?” and “how happy would (you) be if (you) were the subject for a week?”

Explaining the findings to BBC Nature, lead author Alexander Weiss of the University of Edinburgh said: “You don’t have the chimpanzee hitting mid-life and suddenly they want a bright red sports car. But there may be other things that they want like mating with more females or gaining access to more resources.”

Frans de Waal, a primatologist from USA explained to Nature that while it may have been better for the researchers to include more concrete indicators such as stress hormone(荷尔蒙) levels, the conclusions of the study could help all primates. “It may well be that certain physical characteristics, hormone levels or emotion-regulation skills play a role,” he said.

While we may be closer, then, to figuring out the causes of the mid-life crisis, speculation(推测) remains open about why anyone has it at all. The researchers suggest its causes could be anything from an evolutionary need to get better at setting more achievable goals as we age, to the unhappy possibility that unhappy primates are more likely to die sooner.

74. The study by a team of international researchers shows that apes __________. A. are crazy about tablet computers . B. resemble humans more than previously thought C. are caged in zoos around the world D. experience happiness and upsets 75. Which of the following is NOT true about mid-life crisis in mankind? A. It is usually accompanied with little interest in life and work. B. It is often taken for granted, very common in nowadays society. C. it can be studied and interpreted biologically. D. it is usually characterized by job-hopping 76. What can be learned from the passage?

A. Zoo keepers replied the questions instead of the apes.

B. Chimpanzees tend to dominate more females when in midlife.

C. Researchers, specifically, have found emotion-regulation skills in midlife apes. D. The causes of midlife crisis have been comprehended thoroughly. 77. What is mainly about this passage?

The newest generation of American teenagers has been raised on a diet of YouTube, Facebook and American Idol. These inventions are harmless but when combined they have created a culture where teenagers want to be rich and famous and believe everyone should know everything about their lives.

The spokesperson for this fame-hungry, talent-less generation is Britney Spears.

At a young age, Spears seemed to have it all. She was starring on the Mickey Mouse Club TV show when she was 11. At 18, Spears released her album Baby One More Time. The album instantly made Spears a pop icon(偶像). She had millions of dollars and was on top of the world. But as the saying goes, “the higher you are, the harder you fall.”

With fame came an obsession(困扰) into Spears' personal life. Photographers followed her

everywhere she went. Eventually, she couldn't take it anymore and she made a series of bad decisions. First, she married a high school friend. But the marriage only lasted a matter of hours. Then she married her back-up dancer, Kevin Federline, who was a known playboy. Then she shaved her head and suffered a big breakdown. She did all of this with the world watching.

But then her father, Jamie, stepped in and took control. Spears took some time away from the spotlight to get things in order. Now she is promoting her new album, Circus, which is a good word to describe her life. The CD is currently No 1 in America.

It has been a crazy ride for Spears but when judging her, remember that she was once a sweet, young girl whom a lot of people thought they could make money off. Even with all she's been through, she's only 27 years old.

So for any young person out there, who is posting videos on YouTube and dreaming about becoming famous, remember to be careful what you wish for. You might just get it.
