Definition of SBS Now, there are two widespread and widely-accepted ways to define SBS. One definition made by WHO (World Health Organization) is that at least 20% of staff inside will show some symptoms and their complaints will last for more than two weeks. Moreover, their symptoms will be alleviated or disappear when they leave this building. Another one made by ASHRAE 62— 1989 is that acceptance of air inside will be judged by the unacceptable rates of the visitors(≤20%). 目前，有两种流传较广、较为人们所接受的SBS定义。一 种是世界卫生组织做出的定义，即至少有20% 以上的室 内人员表现出一定的症状，他们的投诉必须持续2周以上， 并且当人员离开这幢大楼后症状会有所减轻或消失。另一 种是美国供暖制冷空调工程师学会标准ASHRAE 62— 1989做出的定义，它是以来访者对室内空气的不接受率 (≤20%)来判断室内空气是否可接受。

SBS is the syndrome caused by long-term contact with dust,vapor,gas fungi,bacteria and other air contaminant accumulated in some structure inside the building. Besides, other causes of SBS are inappropriate lighting, uncomfortably hot environment and excessive noises. Generally speaking, their syndromes will disappear when sufferers leave these buildings. 病态建筑综合症(SBS)是指建筑物内人群由于长 期接触灰尘、蒸汽、气体真菌、细菌和其他室内 空气污染物(积攒于某一结构内)而产生反应的综 合症状。除此之外，还有不适宜的照明，不舒适 的热环境或过分噪声。一般来说，当受害人群离 开这些建筑物时，症状也就消失了。

Sick Building syndrome makes energyefficient buildings not efficient.

According to foreign official assessment in1989, SBS caused 1 billion medical c onsumption and 10 billion labor loss every year although there was no exact data of economic loss due to work inefficiency. It was assessed by EPA that the loss, caused by SBS, of absenteeism and production was 60 billion every year.
