(B) “Goodnight, John.” “Goodnight, Lynn.”

Lynn Millington kissed her boyfriend goodnight. He walked to his car and drove away. Lynn walked into her house. It was midnight. Her parents were asleep, and the house was quiet. Lynn sat down on the sofa. She had a problem, and she needed some time to think. Lynn’s boyfriend was John Biggin. John loved Lynn, and Lynn loved John. They were very happy together. What was the problem? Lynn wanted to get married. John wanted to get married, too, but he was afraid.

Sometimes Lynn and John talked about getting married. “Let’s get married in June,” Lynn said. “June is a beautiful month for a wedding(婚礼).”

“June?” John asked. “This June? Let’s not get married in June. Let’s wait a little longer.”

Lynn waited…and waited. She was very patient, but she wanted to get married. Lynn’s parents wanted her to get married, too; they liked John. John’s parents also wanted them to get married because they liked Lynn. Suddenly Lynn had an idea. “John’s parents will help me!” she thought.

The next morning Lynn telephoned John’s parents. “I need your help,” Lynn told them. “John wants to get married, but he’s afraid. Let’s plan a wedding for John and me. But don’t tell John about the wedding.”

Next, Lynn called Bob Raper, who was John’s best friend. “I need your help,” Lynn told Bob. “Tell John that you’re getting married this Saturday. Invite him to your wedding.” Bob wasn’t really getting married on Saturday. It was a trick. John and Lynn were getting married on Saturday, but John didn’t know it.

On Saturday morning John put on his best suit. Then he drove to the courthouse(法院)in Bridlington, England. He walked into the courthouse and looked around. He saw his friend Bob and his girlfriend Lynn.. Then he saw his parents, relatives, and friends. He saw Lynn’s family and friends. Suddenly John understood. This was not Bob’s wedding! It is sometimes reported that strange flying objects have been seen high up in the sky. People call these strange things UFOs. These UFOs caused a lot of interest. Some of the reports about them are difficult to believe. Some have been explained in scientific ways. Others have never been explained.

Here is a description of UFOs from a report.

Dennis Bardens, who wrote an article, tells us that he once saw a UFO himself. He was having dinner one night with a friend near Tripoli, Libya(利比亚),and after dinner the two men walked across a yard(院子)to his room to look at some papers. Bardens noticed that the moon looked strange that night. “It wasn’t the moon,” was the reply.

They watched the light and saw that it was moving. It seemed to be an object rather like a big plate. In some ways it looked like smoke with a light on it, but it wasn’t smoke because it didn’t change its shape. It was moving in a regular(规律的) way. That is to say, it didn’t go suddenly faster or more slowly, and it didn’t go higher or lower. So the two men were sure that there must be men in it.

When it came nearer to Libya, Bardens said that he felt eyes looking at him. He was being watched in the darkness.

When it was nearer, they noticed that the bottom parts were brighter than the top. The bottom was yellow and the top red. Then the object suddenly turned away and left Libya, moving very fast.

On a later day Bardens talked to other people about it, and he found some who had seen it. They all described it in the same way. Could they all be mistaken? Choose the best answer:

The weather! The weather! The weather! Don’t people talk about anything else? It is true that the weather is important to us. Our activities and moods(情绪) change with the weather. As the seasons change, our lives become easy or difficult. My family and I have lived in New Orleans for four years and we’ve visited other parts of the United States. New Orleans is different from some other parts of the United States. Here, we don’t really have four seasons. We have summer, and then there is the rest of the year!

Summertime is a hot and humid(潮湿) time. The hot weather lasts from May to October. Many people turn on their air conditioners and stay indoors. The sun shines, except when it rains. It rains often, but it becomes hot and humid again right after the rain. People carry umbrellas for the rain and the sun! Summertime is also a fun time, especially for young people. This summer, my brother, Roberto, and I have often gone with our friends to the Gulf Coast to spend the day on the beach. We usually take a picnic lunch and swim or sit in the sun. Since June, the beaches have been especially crowded on the weekends. In the evening sometimes, we have listened to music on the lakefront, gone out to eat with our girlfriends, or taken them to a movie. Summer nights in New Orleans are usually warm and romantic(浪漫). I love summer!

Fall, winter and spring are really one big season. It rains a little, but it never snows. In December and January, the temperature is cool, but it rarely freezes. When it doesn’t freeze, flowers bloom all year round. My mother loves that! She especially loves the month of April. That’s when the azaleas(杜鹃花) and camellias(山茶花)bloom. Everyone in our family is very busy in fall, winter, and spring. My brother and I work part time and study full time. My parents work long hours.

The weather is important to all of us. Our lives change with weather. Summer is the best season for my family and me. We can relax and take life a little easy. I don’t like the busy, busy times. Why can’t we have summer all year long? Answer the following questions: 90. Why is the weather important to us?
