Most of us grow up taking certain things for granted. We tend to assume that experts and religious leaders tell us ―the truth‖. We tend to believe that things advertised on television or in newspapers can’t be bad for us.

However, encouragement of critical thinking in students is one of the goals of most colleges and universities. Few professors require students to share the professors’ own beliefs. In general, professors are more concerned that students learn to question and critically examine the arguments of others, including some of their own beliefs or values. This does not mean that professors insist that you change your beliefs, either. I t does mean, however, that professors will usually ask you to support the views you express in class or in your writing.

If your premises (前提) are shaky, or if your arguments are not logical, professors personally point out the false reasoning in your arguments. Most professors want you to learn to recognize the premises of your arguments, to examine whether you really accept these premises, and to understand whether or not you draw logical conclusions. Put it this way: Professors don’t tell you what to think; they try to teach you how to think.

On the other hand, if you intend to disagree with your professors in class, you should be prepared to offer a strong argument in support of your ideas. Arguing just for the sake of arguing usually does not promote a critical examination of ideas. Many professors interpret it as rudeness. 36. In the first paragraph, the writer tries to tell us that people _______. A) easily accept certain things without a second thought B) grow up through learning certain things in life C) are forming their views during their growth

D) have strong beliefs in authorities while getting old

38. The word ―shaky‖ (Line 1, Para.3) most probably means ―___________‖.

A) creative B) firm C) false D) weak

A) choice of their premises

B) the way to think independently C) skills of drawing conclusions D) different kinds of arguments

40. According to the writer, the right way to argue is to _____________.

Last July, my 12-year-old car died on California's Santa Ana Freeway. It was an hour before sunset, and I was 25 miles from home. I couldn't reach anyone to pick me up, so I decided to take a bus. Not knowing the routes, I figured I'd just head east. A bus pulled up, and I asked the driver how far she was going. ―Four more lights,‖ she said. There was another bus I could take from there. This clearly was going to be a long night. She dropped me off at the end of her route and told me which bus to look for. After waiting 30 minutes, I began to think about a very expensive taxi ride home. Then a bus pulled up. There was no lighted number above its windshield (挡风玻璃). It was out of service. But the door opened, and I was surprised to find that it was the same driver. ―I just can't

leave you here,‖ she said. ―This isn't the nicest place. I'll give you a ride home.‖ ―You'll drive me home in the bus?‖ I asked, perplexed (困惑). ―No, I'll take you in my car,‖ she said. ―It's a long way,‖ I protested. ―Come on, ‖ she said. ―I have nothing else to do.‖ As we drove from the station in her car, she began telling me a story. A few days earlier, her brother had run out of gas. A good Samaritan picked him up, took him to a service station and then back to his car. ―I'm just passing the favor along, ‖ she said. When I offered her money as a thank-you, she wouldn't hear of it. ―That wouldn't make it a favor, ‖ she said. ―Just do something nice for somebody. Pass it along.‖

36. Why did the writer say that he would have a long night? A. He wondered how long he had to wait for the next bus. B. No driver would give him a ride. C. He didn't know the routes.

D. He perhaps would have to take a taxi.

37. Judging from its context, the place where the writer waited for the second bus was _______. A. very quiet and peaceful B. dark without street lights C. neither clean nor beautiful D. a little unsafe

38. Why did the writer change his mind after waiting for 30 minutes at the end of the route? A. No bus would come at the time.

B. A taxi ride would be more comfortable. C. He became impatient and a bit worried. D. He knew the driver would never return.

39. The bus driver drove the writer home later because ________. A. she happened to go in the same direction

B. she wanted to do something good for other people C. her brother told her to do so D. she wanted to earn more money

40. The bus driver hoped that the writer ________. A. would do as she did

B. would keep her in memory C. would give the money to others D. would do her a favor

Task 2

Directions: This task is the same as Task 1. The 5 questions or unfinished statements are numbered 41 through 45.

Our quarrel with efficiency is not that it gets things done, but that it is a thief of time when it leaves us no leisure to enjoy ourselves, and that it strains our nerves when we try to get things done perfectly. In building bridges, American engineers calculate so finely and exactly as to make the two ends come together within one-tenth of an inch. But when two Chinese begin to dig a tunnel from both sides of a mountain both come out on the other side. --The Chinese’s firm belief is that it doesn’t matter so long as a tunnel is dug through, and if we have two instead of one, why,

we have a double track to boot.

The pace of modern industrial life forbids this kind of glorious and magnificent idling. But, worse than that, it imposes upon us a different conception of time as measured by the clock and eventually turns the human being into a clock himself. (This sort of thing is bound to come to China, as is evident, for instance, in the case of a factory of twenty thousand worker. The luxurious prospect of twenty thousand workers coming in at their own sweet pleasure at all hours is, of course, somewhat terrifying.)Nevertheless, such efficiency is what makes life so hard and full of excitement. A man who has to be punctually at a certain place at five o’clock has the whole afternoon from one to five ruined for him already. Every American adult is arranging his time on the pattern of the schoolboy - three o’clock for this, five o’clock for that, six-thirty for change of dress, six-fifty for entering the taxi, and seven o’clock for arriving at the destination. It just makes life not worth living.

42. The writer objects to efficiency mainly on the grounds that it ____. A) entitles us to too much leisure time B) urges us to get things done punctually C) deprives us of leisure time

D) imposes on us a perfect concept of time

43. In the eyes of the author, the introduction of industrial life gives rise to ____. A) the excitement of life B) magnificent idling of time C) more emphasis on efficiency D) terrifying schoolboy 44. The passage tells us ____.

A) Chinese workers come to work when it is convenient B) all Americans are forced to be efficient against their will C) Chinese engineers are on better terms with the management D) Americans ought not to work so hard for efficiency

45. The author believes that relaxing the rule of punctuality in factories would lead to ____. A) great confusion

B) increased production C) a hard and exciting life

D) successful completion of a tunnel

46. What is implied but NOT stated by the author is that ____.

A) every American is arranging his time in the pattern of a schoolboy B) every American is reluctant to be efficient

C) every one should have some time to spend as he pleases

D) being punctual is an undesirable habit which should not be formed

Task 3

Directions: After reading it, you should complete the information by filling in the blanks marked 46 through 50 in no more than 3 words in the table below.

Over a million people visit Hawaii(夏威夷)each year because of its beautiful weather and wonderful scenery(景色). The Hawaiian islands have very mild temperatures. For example, August, the hottest month, average 78.4oF, while February, the coldest month, averages 71.9oF. In addition, the rainfall in Hawaii is not very heavy because mountains on the north of each island stop incoming storms; for instance, Honolulu averages only 23 inches of rain per year. This beautiful weather helps tourists to enjoy Hawaii’s wonderful natural scenery, from mountain waterfalls to fields of flowers and fruits. And Hawaii’s beautiful beaches are everywhere — from the lovely Kona coast beaches on the large island of Hawaii to Waikiki Beach on Oahu. The trend towards globalization (全球化) began seriously in the early 1970s when the system of fixed exchange rates was removed. This meant that the value of currencies (货币) would now be determined by the markets instead of individual governments. Other factors contributing to the rise of globalization are new communication technologies and better transportation systems. These have enabled companies to grow into multinationals (跨国公司) — producing goods on one side of the planet and selling them on the other.

But what is really holding globalization back is the lack of labor mobility. Labor markets remain surprisingly national, even in areas like European Union (欧盟), where citizens can live and work in any EU country. The main reasons for this are language and cultural barriers; the lack of internationally- recognized qualifications; and, in some case, strict immigration controls.

This report is about the -46- .

Three factors that have contributed to the globalization are pointed out in the report. They are removal of the system of -47- , new -48- and better transportation systems. The lack of -49- prevents the globalization.
