When we do the same movements with our bodies over and over again, we overuse some muscles. And that

overuse can lead to strain (劳损) and injury. Sometimes those problems can come from doing sports. But there is another cause for muscle problems: hand-held technology devices.

Staring down at your phone or tablet for long periods of time puts great tension on your neck. Experts say this posture puts strain on the entire upper body. Muscle strain linked to hand-held technology has become such a common condition that it now has a name: tech neck.

Common symptoms of tech neck are neck pain, loss of feeling in your hands and fingers, headaches -- both mild and severe -- and poor posture. In the worst cases of tech neck, you can lose the strength in your hands and fingers.

You can take simple steps to improve tech neck. Take breaks from using your technology. Stand up and stretch your legs often. Also, give your eyes a break by closing them throughout the day. Do neck exercises. Experts at the website Spine Universe recommend these three neck stretches.

Chin (下巴) Stretch

Move your chin towards your chest. Hold for 5 seconds. The stretch should feel comfortable from your neck to the base of your skull. Repeat 10 times.

Side Lean (倾斜)

Lean your head to the right. Bring your ear close to the shoulder. Hold for 20 seconds. Bring your head back to center, and then tilt it to the left, again holding for 20 seconds. Repeat 3-5 times on each side.

Side-to-Side Head Turning

Turn your chin towards your right shoulder. Hold for 20 seconds. Bring your head back to the center, and then turn it to the left, again holding for 20 seconds. Repeat 3-5 times on each side.

And if your tech neck symptoms get worse, see a health care professional.

8. What does the underlined phrase “tech neck” in paragraph 2 mean?

A. Neck pain caused by sports.

B. Neck care done with technology devices.

C. Protection for problems with certain devices.

D. Neck problems caused by using technology devices.

9. What is the possible result of tech neck?

A. Weak fingers.

B. Poor eyesight.

C. Overuse of muscles.

D. Stronger neck.

10. Which of the following shows the correct gesture of “Side Lean”?

A. B.

C. D.

11. What do the first and third neck exercises have in common?

A. Shaking the head.

B. Touching the chest.

C. Moving the chin.

D. Turning in the same direction.

Driverless technology will soon enter another major global industry: shipping. Several companies recently announced plans to launch self-sailing ships to improve safety and efficiency.

One of them is the Norwegian chemical company Yara International. Yara has teamed up with another Norwegian company, Kongsberg, to build an autonomous goods ship expected to be launched next year. Kongsberg developed the ship’s electrical technology and autonomous control systems. The ship is fully ele ctric to reduce air pollution. It is designed to carry goods containers normally transported by truck. This means the ship will also improve road safety by replacing about 40,000 truck trips a year. The company plans to operate the ships by far-away contro l beginning sometime next year. By 2020, the ships should be loading and sailing themselves. While Yara’s ships will be limited to Norway at first, the company plans to greatly expand its autonomous shipping operations in the coming years.

Another company putting a high priority (优先) to self-sailing ships is the world’s largest mining company, Australia’s BHP Billiton. The company’s Vice President of Freight, Rashpal Bhatti, recently spoke about the technology in a website post. Bhatti believes automation will be one of the biggest changes for shipping in the future. He said, “Autonomous ships offer important opportunities to improve safety and provide more effective results to the supply chain of the sea.” He added that self-sailing ships could become a reality within the next decade.

Rolls-Royce, the British automobile and engine manufacturer (制造商), is also developing unmanned (无人驾驶的) shipping technologies. Oskar Levander is the company’s head of operations at sea. He said in a conference last year, “This is happening. It’s not if, it’s when.”

Levander said these autonomous ships could be controlled by far-away operators from anywhere. He added,

“Because these ships will be designed to be unmanned, they can be built smaller, more efficient and environmentall y friendly.”

12. Why have several countries announced plans to produce self-sailing ships?

A. To save money.

B. To develop electrical technology in ships.

C. To compete in autonomous control systems.

D. To make shipping more effective and less risky.

13. How will the Norwegian autonomous ship be developed?

A. On the basis of Rolls-Royce.

B. By a single company independently.

C. By two native companies working together.

D. By taking electrical technology from Australia.

14. What do Oskar Levander’s words suggest in Paragraph 4?

A. It is too early to make autonomous ships.

B. The supply chain of the sea will be busier.

C. People are more concerned about autonomous ships.

D. Unmanned shipping technologies are becoming more mature.

15. What would be the best title for the text?

A. Automation under Sail

B. Self-sailing Ships in Use

C. Automation in Some Fields

D. Automation in Imagination

Dear Betty,

How time flies! I’ve been in Britain for nearly three months. And I’ve met with some trouble either in life and study recently. I’m writing to you for help.

First of all I’m feeling exhausting and lonely. I am a totally stranger here. Beside, the western diet doesn’t agree for me at all! To make matters worse, I still found it hard to follow the native speakers though I have exposed to English for nine years. Meanwhile, I am afraid to answer questions in class for the lack of confidence. I wonder how to deal with the problems. I’d appreciate it that you could be so kind to give me some useful advices.

Looking forward to your reply. Yours, 的,

Li Hua
