我十岁那年，突然要搬家，从我唯一熟悉的家搬走，心中痛苦万分。从出生的那一刻起，我整个的简短人生就是在那栋虽破旧然而宽敞的老屋里度过的。全家四代人苦也好，乐也好，相敬如宾地生活在一起。 当搬家的日子终于不可避免地来临的时候，我跑到老屋后面的小门廊，坐在那儿独自伤心地颤抖着，泪水从心底喷涌而出。突然，一只手放在我的肩头，抬起头，我看到了外公，“有点难受是不是？比利！”外公在我身边的台阶上坐下来，和蔼地说。

“外公，”我透过泪水说，“我如何向您和我的朋友们说再见呢？”

外公顿了顿，起身走向苹果树，“‘再见’是一个让人伤心的词儿，”他说，“说‘再见’好像太绝情、有太多的告别意味。我们似乎有许多不同的方式说再见，但它们都有一个共同之处，那就是令人感到悲伤。” 我迷惑的目光仍然停留在外公的脸上，他轻轻地拉起我，“跟我来，孩子。”外公低声说道。 他拉起我的手来到前院，外公最喜欢的地方长着一大丛红色的玫瑰，兀自傲然地开着。
