China news, Nanjing, Nov. 14 --- “People who suffer from mental illness are able to draw. Actually, they can draw very well,” said Guo Haiping, a contemporary artist in Nanjing.

“In China, no one believes that they can draw paintings. We have so many prejudices against this group of people and we really don’t know anything about their mysterious mental world,” Guo said.

At Nanjing Zu Tang Shan Psychiatric Hospital, Guo let the mentally retarded people see some paintings and gave them water color brushes, color pencils, oil chalk and clay. He told them they could do whatever they wanted with these materials. He didn’t teach them how to draw. He just encouraged them to pick up some of these materials and draw something. The other day, my friend Jane was invited to a 40th birthday party. The time printed on the invitation was 7:30 pm. Jane went off with her husband, expecting a merry evening of wine, food, and song.

ATLANTA, Georgia--- Alternative medicine --- including yoga, meditation, herbs（草药）and the Atkins diet（艾特金斯饮食法）---appears to be growing in popularity in the United States, perhaps because of dissatisfaction with conventional（传统的）care, the government said Thursday.

More than a third of American adults used such practices in 2002, according to the government survey of 31,000 people, the largest study on non-conventional medical approaches in the United States. If prayer is included, about 62 percent of U. S. adults used some form of alternative medicine.

The results seem to indicate more people are turning to alternative medicine, though the 2002 survey could not be directly compared to previous studies because of differences in size and survey methods, health officials said.

The top alternative therapies（疗法）included prayer (43 percent of adults) , natural products（19 percent）, meditation（8 percent）and diets such as Atkins, Ornish, or the Zone （4 percent）. More people also are using natural products such as herbs or enzymes（酶）to treat chronic or recurring pain（慢性或经常性疼痛）, said Richard Nahin of the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, part of the National Institutes of Health.

“Many conditions are not easily treated with conventional medicine,” Nahin said. “It may

“People are making individual decisions to neglect those therapies and we have concerns about those choices,” he said.

Health officials said they were concerned that 13 percent of those surveyed said they turned to alternative medicine because regular medicine is too expensive.

“It needs to be explored ---we need to find out whether they were insured or not” Nahin said.

Health officials also were surprised that 6.6 percent of those surveyed used the supplement kava kava（卡瓦提取物）, which has been associated with liver disease.

When Huizenga returned at Christmas, Moreland recalls, “I had so much to tell her, but she never called.”

Sociologists Rebecca Adams Rosemary and Blieszner interviewed 53 adults who each had many friendships lasting decades. “We were curious how these people managed to sustain strong friendships for so long,” says Blieszner. Tolerance is key, the researchers learned.” It’s surprising how often a dispute results from a simple misunderstanding,” adds psychotherapist Anne Frenkel.

Accept that friendships change. “Friendships change as our needs and lifestyles change,” Wilmot observes.

In my spoken English class, I asked the students about their impressions of their university life. To my surprise, many of them expressed disappointment. After their highly controlled high school lives, they were having difficulty adjusting to the free time in the university. When I asked them to describe their high school lives, many of them told me they got up at six in the morning and studied until ten at night. Most of this time was spent at school, doing piles of homework to help them prepare for the university entrance exams.

Once they entered the university, in my opinion, the students are not expected to devote all their waiting hours to studying, they should also take an active part in social activities. Therefore, they should learn to divide their time outside of the class between sports and clubs. What’s more, they should spend some time watching TV and chatting with their roommates. These activities are useful in helping them prepare for their future. But what struck me most was that many of them did not seem particularly happy about their new found freedom. As they had so many choices, they felt that no matter what they were doing, they should be doing something else. That’s why they were not happy.

To those students, my advice was, get used to it and learn to make decisions for yourselves.
