England is not a big country: from north to south and from east to west it is only about three hundred miles across. (76) But for a small country it has a surprising range of climate. People who have never visited England, or who have visited only one part of it, often make the mistake of thinking that it is a cold and wet country. Except for the summer months of June to September, this is probably true of the north of England and the Midlands. In the south, however, the climate
is much more pleasant. One result is that when people retire from a job in the north they often prefer to move down to the milder south.
Perhaps the warmest part of the country is the southwest, which consists of the counties of Devon and Cornwall. The warm Gulf Stream flows across the North Atlantic Ocean from the Gulf of Mexico and makes the coastal regions of the southwest quite warm. Palm trees, bamboo (竹)and many semi-tropical (亚热带的 ) plants grow well in the southwest of England. Flowers and vegetables ripen(成熟) as much as a month earlier than those elsewhere. Farmers in the area obtain a higher price for their vegetables and flowers because they are ready earlier. (77) In winter there may be several feet of snow in other parts of England but there will probably be no snow at all in the southwest. This may be one of the reasons why the southwest is one of England' s most popular holiday areas.
The distance from the center of England to the south coast is about__________. A.one hundred miles B.three hundred miles
C.one hundred and fifty miles D.six hundred miles
17、 England is a country__________. A.with a cold and wet climate B.with a surprising climate C.with a pleasant climate D.with a variety of climates

A.flowers and vegetables from Devon are on the market one month earlier
B.farmers in the southwest grow as many vegetables and flowers as farmers elsewhere C.people in the southwest have to pay a higher price for vegetables and flowers D.vegetables in Cornwall ripen as much as a month earlier than flowers
19、 In the north of England and the Midlands,__________. A.it is cold and wet all the year round B.the climate is pleasant as a whole C.it is warm most of the time in a year D.only the summer is not cold or wet
20、 In winter, people in Devon and Cornwall__________. A.seldom see snow B.never see any snow
C.may have several feet of snow
D.often see snow

To swim across the English Channel takes at least nine hours. It' s a hard work and it makes you short of breath. To fly over the Channel takes only twenty minutes ( as long as you' re not held up at the airport), but it' s an expensive way to travel. You can travel by hovercraft if you don' t mind the noise, and that takes forty minutes. Otherwise you can go by boat, if you forget your sea-sickness ills. All these means of transport have their problems and the weary( 不耐烦的)travel-er often dreams of being able to drive to France in his own car. \Well,wait a minute. People are once again considering the idea of a Channel tunnel or bridge. This time, the Greater London Council is looking into the possibility of building a Channel link straight to London. (79) A bridge would cost far more than a tunnel, but you would be able to go by rail or by car on a bridge, whereas a tunnel would provide a rail link only.
Why is this idea being discussed again? Is Britain becoming more conscious of the need for links with Europe as a result of joining the EEC( 欧共体) ? Well, perhaps. The main reason, though, is that a tunnel or bridge would reach the twenty square kilometers of London' s disused dockland(船坞地) ~ A link from London to the continent would stimulate trade and re-vitalize(使…重新有活力) the port, and would make London a main trading center in Europe. (80)With a link over the Channel, you could buy your fish and chips in England, and be able to eat them in France while they were still warm!
Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.Swimming across the Channel takes less than four hours. B.The idea of a Channel tunnel or bridge is a very new one.
C.It is considered to be more difficult to swim across the channel than any other means. D.A tunnel or bridge would only reach as far as the coast.
22、 A tunnel would be__________.

23、 If they built a Channel tunnel, you would__________. A.neither take a train nor go by car B.only take a train

Some psychologists(心理学家) maintain that mental acts such as thinking are not performed in the brain alone, but that one' s muscles also participate. (76)It may be said that we think with our muscles in somewhat the same way that we listen to music with our bodies.
You surely are not surprised to be told that you usually listen to music not only with your ears but with your whole body. Few people can listen to music without moving their body or, more spe-cifically, some part of their body. Often when one listens to a symphonic concert on the radio, he is attracted to direct the orchestra (乐队) even though he knows there is a good conductor on the job.
Strange as this behavior may be, there is a very good reason for it. One cannot derive all pos-sible enjoyment from music unless he participates, so to speak, in its performance. The listener \himself into the music with more or less noticeable motions of his body.
( 77 ) The muscles of the body actually participate in the mental process of thinking in the same way, but this participation is less obvious because it is less noticeable.
