Last month, the Metropolitan Museum of Art reluctantly handed over 363 pieces of gold, silver, precious stones, paintings, and sculptures back to Turkey after a court case. Following increasing calls for the return of artistic objects that were removed decades or centuries ago, some of the world's leading museums have signed a declaration that they will not hand back the ancient artifacts to their countries of origin. They say people all over the world have only been able to fidly appreciate ancient civilizatious because these mnseums have provided access to these artistic objects. The ancient civilizations would not be so deeply admired today if these ancient artifacts were not so widely available to an international public in nmjor museums throughout Europe and America. For example, Egyptian culture would not have become so well-known ifthe museums had not put Egyptian mummies on show.

The British Museum has net singed the declaration, but says it fully supports it. Over the recent years, it has faced growing pressure to hand back the Elgin Marbles, sculptures taken from the Parthenon in Athens, Greece, in the 19m century. But the British Museum has said that the Museum is the best possible place for them. \continue to achieve its aim, which is to show the world to the world,\museum.

Vitamins are meant to improve people's immune systems, and with the spread of SARS many Chinese are taking vitamin A, C, and E every day.

But some US researchers say that vitamin supplements cannot correct a poor diet, and that multivitamins have not been shown to prevent any disease, tt is also easy for high doses of certain vitamins and minerals to actually increase the risk of disease.

Experts say they are no longer concerned about vitamin deficiencies. Those are almost unheard of today, even with the population eating fewer fruits and vegetables. Instead, the concern is with the dangers of vitamin excess (过量).

52知道远程教育网 www.52zhidao.com

Dr Benjamin Caballero, a member of the Food and Nutrition Board at the US National Academy of Sciences, said that for some supplements, including vitanfin A, the difference between the recommended dose that could lead to disease like osteoporosis (bone disease) was not large. Popular multivitamins, he added, often contain what could be risky dose.

英语试题 第5页 共10页

Similar questions are being raised about other vitamins and minerals, particularly iron and vitamin E and C. Researchers say the questions involve multivitamins taken by healthy people, not specific vitamins or minerals taken by groups with special needs.

Some elderly people, for example, may lack BI2 because they lose their ability to absorb it from foods.

People who spend little time outdoors may require vitamin D, which the skin makes when it is exposed to sunlight. Even when older people are in the sun, aging skin loses much of its ability to create the vitamin. \you eat junk food every day, vitamins are the least of your problems,\said Dr Caballero. \cannot replace a healthy diet. People are looking for the magic bullet which doesn't exist.\59. From the second paragraph, we can find that _____________.

Recently we have had a heated discussion on whether people should keep pets at home in cities.

Some students think it's a good idea to keep pets because many old people who live alone at home can get some comfort from pets. Besides, getting along well with animals will make our life interesting. On the contrary, the other students are against the idea. In their opinions, if too many people keep pets at home, it is had for the environment. What is worse, pets may make too much noise and even attack people.

I like animals, so I don't think it's bad to keep pets at home. But we must take some measures to prevent them from polluting our environment.
