W:The summer holiday is coming. Where will you go? M:To the beach with my kids. They like the sea.

W:So do mine. We've just bought a large car. Why not go together?

M: Good idea. Text 2

W:I'm going to take some night courses. M:Well, when are you going to get started? W:I'm going to start this fall.

M:Now you're sure. You got enough money?

W:I've talked to my parents and it's green light from them. M: Well, that's great. Text 3

M:What's going on? When you turn on the faucet, it's just drip, drip, drip. W:Well,it's the second day in a row. I guess the pipes are frozen again. M:Really?

W:Yeah. Yesterday the water even went off without a warning. I couldn't take a shower, nor could I wash the dishes.

M:Well, that's too bad. I will have someone to repair it. Text 4

M:Can you keep an eye on my bag, please? Nature's calling. W:Sure. Will you be long? The train is coming soon. M:No. I just want to use the bathroom. W:Go ahead. It'll be safe with me. Text 5

M: Why are you wearing your bathing suit around the house?

W:Yesterday I went swimming at my friend's house and I forgot to put my sunscreen on. M:That wasn't very brilliant.

W:Well, the sun didn't feel hot when I got in,but I guess I was wrong. I got burnt to a crisp! M:So why the suit?

W:I can't stand to wear anything else. Text 6

M:What happened to your eye?

W:Nothing really. I went to kiss my daughter on her stomach last night and she reached up to stop me. When she did that, her fingernails scrapped my eye.

M:That sounds painful.

W:It wasn't too bad at first, but the next morning it really hurt. M:What did the doctor say?

W:He said that it should be OK,but there might be a little scarring over my field of vision, so

my eyes may be blurry.

M:I'm sorry to hear that.

W:Thanks. Who knew that a poke in the eye would cause so much damage? Text 7

M:And is Kitty an indoor or an outdoor cat?

W:Both really. She stays in at night but she's out most of the day, playing with other cats. M: Right, walk along here, Kitty. Now, mm, you see? She's limping. Let's have another look at that front paw. Ah yes, see here——there's some swelling.

W: What happens?

M: I'm not sure exactly but it's likely she was in a fight, probably with another eat, or maybe she just stood on something sharp, like a piece of glass.

W:Will she be alright?

M:Oh yes. You just need to give her these antibiotics—twice a day for the next five days. W: Thanks very much.

M: Ah, it's a pleasure. Bye, Kitty! Text 8

W:Pardon me,officer. I want to go to Bums Park. Would you please tell me how to get there? M:Yes,Miss. Burns Park is about half a mile from here. Do you want to take a bus or walk? The bus stop is or the other side of the street if you want to take a bus.

W:Well,I'd like to walk if it's within walking distance.

M:All right. We are now on Main Street. Go this way along, until you come to First Street. W:I see.

M:Go along Main Street as far as First Street. Turn left onto First Street and walk another two blocks. Then you'll come to Lincoln Street.

W: Lincoln Street.

M:Yes, then turn right. Walk for a few minutes. Burns Park begins at the corner of Lincoln and Fifth.

W: Thank you very much, officer. M: You're welcome. Good-bye. Text 9

M:Let me see now. Which train do I need to get on? W:Excuse me. Do you need any help?

M:Yes. I want to go to Tokyo Tower, but I'm really lost. This is my first visit to Japan,so I have no idea on how to ride the trains.

W:First, you need to buy a ticket to your destination. From there,it's a hundred and thirty yen. M:A hundred and thirty yen. OK.

No one is sure how the ancient Egyptians built the pyramids near Cairo. But a new study suggests they used a little rock‘n’roll.Long-ago builders could have attached wooden poles to the stones and rolled them across the sand, the scientists say.

“Technically,I think what they're proposing is possible,” physicist Daniel Bonn said. People have long puzzled over how the Egyptians moved such huge rocks. And there's no obvious answer. On average, each of the two million big stones weighed about as much as a large pickup truck. The Egyptians somehow moved the stone blocks to the pyramid site from about one kilometer away.

The most popular view is that Egyptian workers slid the blocks along smooth paths. Many scientists suspect workers first would have put the blocks on sleds(滑板).Then they would have dragged them along paths. To make the work easier, workers may have __lubricated the paths either with wet clay or with the fat from cattle.Bonn has now tested this idea by building small sleds and dragging heavy objects over sand.

Evidence from the sand supports this idea.Researchers found small amounts of fat,as well as a large amount of stone and the remains of paths.

However, physicist Joseph West thinks there might have been a simpler way,who led the new study.West said,“I was inspired while watching a television program showing how sleds might have helped with pyramid construction.I thought,‘Why don't they just try rolling the things? ’” A square could be turned into a rough sort of wheel by attaching wooden poles to its sides,he realized. That,he notes, should make a block of stone “a lot easier to roll than a square”.

So he tried __it. He and his students tied some poles to each of four sides of a 30-kilogram stone block. That action turned the block into somewhat a wheel. Then they placed the block on the ground.

They wrapped one end of a rope around the block and pulled. The researchers found they could easily roll the block along different kinds of paths. They calculated that rolling the block required about as much force as moving it along a slippery(滑的)path.

West hasn't tested his idea on larger blocks, but he thinks rolling has clear advantages over sliding. At least, workers wouldn't have needed to carry cattle fat or water to smooth the paths.
