Welcome to the Civic Art Museum’s Exhibit of West African Art, showing pieces

from our collections.

Background

The peoples of West Africa, including the Yoruba, the Dogon, have a long art tradition. Tribes (部落) in the area have developed different styles of art and architecture that are suited to the climate and available materials and based on their traditions.

Gallery A: Photographs of Traditional West African Architecture(建筑)

This section shows historical photos of traditional West African architecture. Of particular interest are the photos of the Dogon village. The design of the Dogon village is based on the human figure. Certain types of buildings are placed in particular areas according to the Dogon’s philosophical(哲学上的) tradition. For example, the men’s houses are placed in the “head” of the village, the leader’s house is in the “chest,” and the women’s houses are in the “hands.”

The art of mask making is well developed in West Africa. Masks are important to West African traditions and have clear social, political, and economic roles. However, most masks are worn only at particular times or on special occasions. For example, among the Dan and the Kota, certain people wear special masks to show their power when they act as judges and policemen within the community. Among the Bambara of Mali, headdresses are worn during planting and harvest celebrations.

Gallery C: West African Sculptures(雕塑)

West African sculptures are made from materials such as metal or wood. They are based on tribal traditions and quite different. The Dogon are especially known for making figures of ancestors. They believe their ancestors, called Nommo, came down from the sky at the beginning of time. Nommo figures are often shown with their hands reaching out to the sky. The collection contains several wonderful examples of Nommo sculptures.

Most people can’t live to 100. Those who do live so long can hardly walk, let alone take part in any activities. A few people, however, take part in dangerous activities even though they are more than 100 years old﹣They keep going and going! There is a great grandmother who likes challenging herself although she is 101 years old this year.

Mary Hardison believes that people should always be cheerful and more importantly, take on all kinds of adventures while they physically still can. So, instead of celebrating her 101st birthday with a boring party, she decided to go paragliding(滑翔跳伞)﹣an idea she got from her 75﹣year﹣old son who recently took it up as a hobby.

So on her birthday, cheered on by her big family, she tied herself up together with expert instructor Kevin Hintze, and jumped down fearlessly from the sky near her home in Ogden, Utah. And, it was not just a simple jump either. According to Kevin Hintze, the grandmother encouraged him to turn around, as they made their way down.

This is not the first time that Mary has done something “wild”and “crazy”. For her 90th birthday she rode all the adult rides at Disneyland. And, she is not done yet﹣For her 102nd birthday she hopes to go down the 3,000 feet Alpine Slide at Utah’s Park City Mountain Resort!

Not surprisingly, this great action has made Mary Hardison very famous and also earned her a place in the Guinness World Records where she broke a 2007 record set by

a 100﹣year﹣old British woman. What an amazing lady!

B. Supportive.

C. Doubtful.

D. Worried.

Your chair is your enemy.

It doesn’t matter if you go running every morning, or you’re a regular at the gym. If you spend most of the rest of the day sitting, you are putting yourself at increased chance of heart disease, cancers and an early death. In other words, even if you exercise energetically, sitting for long periods is bad for you.

So what’s wrong with sitting? One is that sitting is one of the most passive things you can do. You burn more energy by chewing gum than you do sitting still in a chair. Compared to sitting, standing in one place is hard work. To stand, you have to tense your leg muscles, and the muscles of your back and shoulders. While standing, you often change from leg to leg. All of this burns energy.

For many people, weight gain is a matter of slow increase. Thus, a little more time on your feet today and tomorrow can easily make the difference between remaining thin and getting fat. So part of the problem with sitting a lot is that you don’t use as much energy as those who spend more time on their feet. This makes it easier to gain weight, and makes you more likely to suffer from the health problems that fatness often brings.

Some people have advanced solutions: replace your sit-down desk with a stand-up desk. Make sure that your television can only operate if you are practicing

on an exercise bike. Replace your office chair with a therapy(治疗) ball: this uses more muscles and more energy than a normal chair, because you have to support your back and work to keep balanced. But whatever you choose, know this. It is clear: be careful of your chair.

28. The main purpose of writing this passage is to __________.

A. suggest sitting less.

B. advise exercising often.

C. avoid gaining weight.

D. escape standing more.

29. From this passage, we know that _________.

A. less exercise will reduce the chance of having disease.

B. taking exercise regularly but sitting more will do good.

C. standing burns nearly as much energy as sitting still does.

D. energy-burning activities may help you enjoy good health.

30. The underlined word “This” in Paragraph 4 refers to __________.

A. gaining weight.

B. burning energy.

C. sitting too much.

D. standing more.

31. A therapy ball is mentioned in the last paragraph to _________.

A. tell us to walk while working in the office.

B. suggest a way to settle the sitting problem.

C. support our back and keep us balanced.

D. provide a better cure for our backache.

D

Elephants have impressed us for centuries. They are big, clever, and sociable. But what if someone told you that they may also hold the key to fighting cancer (癌症)?

People have been wondering why elephants do not develop cancer, even though they have lifespans (寿命) that are similar to humans, living for around 50 to 70 years.

Now scientists believe they know why. A team at the University of Chicago, US has found that elephants carry a large number of genes that stop tumors (肿瘤) from developing. To be precise, they found 20 copies of an anti-tumor gene called TP53 in elephants. Most other species, including humans, only carry one copy.

According to the research, which was recently published on the online science

network, the extra copies of the gene improved the animal's sensitivity to DNA damage. This lets the cells quickly kill themselves when damaged before they can go on to form deadly tumors.

“An increased risk of developing cancer has stood in the way of the evolution of large body sizes in many animals,” study autho r Dr. Vincent told The Guardian. If every living cell (细胞) has the same chance of becoming cancerous, large creatures with long lifespans like whales and elephants should have a greater risk of developing cancer than humans and mice do. But across species, the risk of cancer does not show a connection with body mass.

This_phenomenon was found by Oxford University scientist Richard Peto in the 1970s and later named “Peto's paradox”. Evolutionary (进化的) biologists believe it results from larger animals using protection that many smaller animals do not. In the elephant's case, the making of TP53 is nature's way of keeping this species alive.

The study also found that when the same genes were brought to life in mice, they had the same cancer resistance (抵抗) as elephants. This means researchers could use the discovery to develop new treatments that can help stop cancers from spreading or even developing in the first place.

“Nature has already figured out how to prevent cancer, ” said Joshua Schiffman, an oncologist at the School of Medicine, University of Utah, US.

“It's up to us to learn how different animals tackle (处理) the problem so we can use those strategies to prevent cancer in people.”

32.Why are elephants unlikely to develop cancer?

A.They have a large body size.

B. Their genes suffer no DNA damage.

C. Certain genes in their body kill existing tumors.

D. They carry many genes that keep tumors from developing.

33. According to Dr. Vincent, what has been a risk in the evolution of large animals?

A. A risk of deadly tumors.

B. Human behavior.

C. Extreme weather.

D. Cells killing themselves.

34. What does the underlined expr ession “This phenomenon” in the sixth paragraph refer to?

A. Larger animals have protection from TP53.

B. The risk of cancer is not related to body size.

C. The larger animals are, the bigger risk of cancer they have.

D. Larger animals suffer the same risk of cancer as smaller ones do.

35. We can conclude from the last three paragraphs that ________.

A. humans are expected to stop cancer in the near future

B. depending on nature is not enough to fight against cancer

C. this new treatment is more effective than the present ones

D. the TP53 genes have proven useful in stopping cancer in mice
