Every year, TIME editors take a look at the past year’s coolest inventions. Last year, they picked 25 favorites. These inventions are making the world better, smarter and a little more fun. Here are some exciting ones. A See-through Truck
Too often people meet with car accidents because a large vehicle blocks their view. This is especially true in Argentina. The South American country is known for its winding and narrow roads. However, Samsung and ad agency Leo Burnett have come up with a creative solution: the Safety Truck. The system sends video footage (片段)in front of a truck to four screens on its back. It gives drivers a clear view of what’s ahead. A Virtual(虚拟的)Pencil and Paper
In the 450 years or so since its invention, a pencil has become so common. It’s easy to forget how great technology is. It writes darker words when you press it harder. Its marks can be erased(擦掉). It’s difficult to digitally copy the way it works. That’s what makes Apple’s latest effort so impressive. The Apple Pencil allows users to draw, paint, or write on a screen, just as they do on a piece of paper. The Apple Pencil goes for $99, and the iPad Pro is $799+. Easy-on Shoes
In 2012, Matthew Walzer, a high school student with a disability, sent a note to Nike. “My dream is to go to college,’’ he wrote, “without having to worry about someone coming to tie my shoes every day.” Nike appointed a design team to the challenge. This year, they came up with their solution: the Flyease. The basketball shoes can be fastened with one hand. A pair of Nike Flyease shoes sells for $130.
21. How does a See-through Truck help avoid the accidents? A. By putting a big block in front of a car.
B. By sending video footage in front of a truck to four screens on its back. C. By writing something on a screen, just as they do on a piece of paper. D. By having to worry about someone rushing out in front of the truck every time. 22. What makes Apple’s latest effort so impressive?
A. The Apple Pencil allows users to draw, paint, or write on a screen. B. The Apple Watch gives users exact time when people need to know it. C. The Apple Pencil goes for $99, and the iPad Air is $799+.
D. The Apple Pencil leaves darker marks on the screen and its marks can’t be erased.

23. Which of the following would Tom, a disabled boy with one hand, like to own? A. A See-through Truck. C. A Flying Bicycle.
B. A Virtual Pencil and Paper. D. Easy-on Shoes.

A solar plane on a round-the-world journey has reached the point of no return over the Pacific Ocean after departing Hawaii, and now it’s California or bust. The plane was cruising over the cold northern Pacific late Thursday at about 6,000 meters with a nearly-full battery as night descended(降临), according to the website that’s recording the journey of Solar Impulse 2.
After some uncertainty about winds, the plane took off from Hawaii and was on course to land in Mountain View, California, in about three days. The crew that helped it take off was clearing out of its Hawaiian hangar (飞机库)and headed for the mainland for the weekend arrival.
At one point the plane was passed by a Hawaiian Airlines jet whose passengers caught a glimpse of the Solar Impulse 2 before the powerful airliner left the slow-moving one behind.
The aircraft landed in Hawaii in July and was forced to stay in the islands after the plane’s battery system sustained heat damage on its trip from Japan.
The aircraft started its journey in March 2015 from Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, and made stops in Oman, Myanmar, China and Japan. It’s on the ninth leg of its circumnavigation(环行).
Pilot Bertrand Piccard, who is flying the latest leg of the trip, was confident on Thursday that things would go according to plan.
Piccard and his co-pilot Andre Borschberg were in charge of the mission. The team was delayed in Asia. When first attempting to fly from Nanjing to Hawaii, the crew had to divert to Japan because of unfavorable weather and a damaged wing.
A month later, when weather conditions were right, the plane departed from Nagoya in Japan for Hawaii.
24. What does the underlined phrase “California or bust” mean in the first paragraph? A. Success or failure. C. Damage or repair.
B. Return or California. D. Destination and success.
D. Solar Challenger.
25. What is the name of the solar plane?
A. Hawaiian Air Jet. B. Andre Borschberg.C. Solar Impulse 2. 26. Why did the solar plane stay in Japan for a month?
A. Because the plane’s battery system sustained heat damage on its trip. B. Because it was a slow-moving solar plane.
C. Because the weather was unfavorable and a wing was damaged. D. Because both of the pilots have no confidence about the solar plane. 27. What is the best title of the passage?
4
A. A Solar Plane Trip in AsiaB. The Round-the-world Trip C. Solar Plane Soars(高飞)from Hawaii to California D. A Pleasant Solar Plane Trip from Japan to California

Heart transplant surgery is a common medical treatment in the United States. Some doctors are skilled at removing the heart from someone who has just died, and then preparing it for another person who needs a new heart. Nationwide, about 4,000 new patients a year are listed for a heart transplant. But only about 2,500 are able to have the operation.
The reason is that there is a shortage of organ donors. Some people do not want to donate their organs or those of a loved one. But also, some donated organs do not make it to the surgery room in the right condition for transplant. Once the organ is removed from the donor, there is only a short time to get the organ to the person who needs it. The average length is four to six hours. After that, the organ begins to fail. This can be a problem if the donor died far away from the recipient (接受者).
Traditionally, the donated hearts are transported in an ice box. Keeping the organ on ice has been the best way to preserve it. Medical workers sometimes carry the box on a helicopter or airplane. Now, a new travel box contains equipment that keeps the heart beating during transport. The only time it stops beating is for a few minutes — just before it is placed into the chest of the person receiving it.
For more than a year, the Organ Care System has been tested in the United States. The system, also known as “heart in a box”, has an American manufacturer, a company called TransMedics. TransMedics develops a transport pump to preserve the heart function, which allows doctors to better match the hearts to the recipients so that more of the hearts that are being donated can actually be used and implanted into recipients.
The equipment has been tested on flights up to 11 hours long. The machine pumps donated blood through the organ, so it can work as it does inside a body.
Doctors say the new technology alone will not end the need for more donated hearts. They are urging Americans to register to become an organ donor.
28. What makes the heart transplant patients difficult to get a new heart? A. Some doctors are skilled at removing the heart from a donator in the US. B. The number of new patients a year listed for a heart transplant is about 4,000. C. The number of heart donators a year is not enough for the operations. D. Only about 2,500 are able to have the heart transplant operation. 29. What might be a problem for the heart transplant operation?
A. Some donated organs make it to the surgery room in the right condition for transplant. B. There is only a short time to get the organ to the person who needs it. C. The average length of keeping removed hearts is four to six hours. D. The donated heart has a long way to go to reach the patient who needs it.

30. How does the Organ Care System work during a long travel for the donated heart? A. It allows doctors to better match the hearts to the recipients. B. It contains a pump that keeps the heart beating during transport. C. It has been tested in the United States for more than a year.
D. It pumps donated blood through the organ, just as it does outside a body. 31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. More Americans are eager to donate their hearts after their death. B. The need for more donated hearts is still a problem at present in the US. C. Doctors are urging Americans to register to become an organ donor. D. The new technology alone can provide more chances for the heart recipients.

I stand in the playroom holding an empty suitcase. We are moving from Switzerland to Singapore and can only pack a few toys to keep us going until the rest arrive by ship months later.
In go the story cubes — imaginative picture dice(骰子)that inspire stories and drawings. Both kids like working with their hands, so in go pom-poms, pipe cleaners and paper punches(纸打孔机). Next, a kingdom of small animal statues marches two-by-two into the case. They have been my children’s favorites in the past month.
But the rest have hardly been touched — and the shelves are still packed with various toys. So why do we have so many toys?
Psychologist Oliver James, author of the parenting book Love Bombing says, “Most children need a transition object, for example, their first teddy bear that they take everywhere. But everything else is a socially generated want.”
Yet, it seems we are keen to generate our children’s wants — the Toy Retailers Association reports that the British alone spend £3bn each year on toys.
Those who advocate fewer toys say children will seem to fight less if they have a wide choice of toys, but, at the same time, they may learn to think of nobody but themselves.
Joshua Becker, a father of two who writes about how to simplify both home and lifestyle, says, “People co-operate better and share when resources are limited, and the same is true for children.” This minimalism (极简主义)affects the whole Becker family, with the kids given a limited space to store their toys, forcing them to adopt a “one in, one out” policy.
He sees his kids “filling their time with creativity” — taking their cycles to the park, inviting friends over to play with dolls, and doing art projects. In addition, he says, they can focus for a longer time, take better care of their possessions and grow more resourceful.
Now Swiss cold will be replaced by Singaporean rains. The change forces me to consider minimalism. Maybe the kids don’t need them — in fact, we’re not short of ways to play more with less.
32. What’s the main reason that the author only brings several toys? A. She can’t carry too many toys with her.
