The past three decades have seen great progress in our knowledge of dealing with travel dangers. But our attention is easily drawn to the new, the fascinating and the challenging, and there has not been much effort to solve the_old_problem and change the way people behave in the sun.

We understand the harmful effects of strong sunlight. As with cigarettes and lung cancer, there’s no need for more research to tell

3

us what we should do.Nor is much research being carried out.Of the hundreds of papers presented at an international conference on travel illnesses, there was only a single paper on the sun.

Last month, a five-month-old baby almost died from sunburn — suffering burns to 40 percent of its skin surface while sleeping on the beach.

Sunburn is only one of the problems caused by strong sunlight and research results are shocking. In men, the death rate for malignant melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, has more than doubled in the past 30 years — from 1.5 per 100,000 population to 3.1 per 100,000, according to Cancer Research UK.It is no coincidence (巧合)that the same 30-year period has seen a rise in traveling. In older age groups, the death rate is much higher.Meanwhile, the number of new cases of melanoma has grown fivefold.More women are being diagnosed with melanoma but more men are dying from it — men are less likely to seek treatment in time.Other more treatable skin cancers are also on the rise, with an estimated 100,000 cases every year.

The underlying reason comes down to this: most pale-skinned people have a strong belief, deeply rooted in our culture, that they look better with browner skin. They will risk cancer and pain to support their goal, and medical education seems to make little difference.

Held in each August Bank Holiday since 1966, the Notting Hill Carnival is the largest festival celebration of its kind in Europe.Every year the streets of West London come alive, with the sounds and smells of Europe’s biggest street festival.Twenty miles of colourful costumes surround over 40 sound systems, hundreds of Caribbean food stalls (摊位), over 40,000 volunteers and over 1 million Notting Hill carnival revelers (狂欢者).

Starting its life as a local festival set up by the West Indian community of the Notting Hill area, it has now become a real Caribbean carnival, attracting millions of visitors from all over the globe. With many astonishing floats (彩车) and the sounds of the traditional steel drum bands, scores of sound systems plus the hundreds of stalls that line the streets of Notting Hill, the Notting Hill Carnival is arguably London’s most exciting annual event.

The Notting Hill Carnival used to get under way on the Saturday with the steel band competition.Sunday is Kids’ Day, when the costume prizes are awarded. On Bank Holiday Monday, the main parade takes place. It generally begins on Great Western Road, then winds its way along Chepstow Road, on to Westbourne Grove, and then Ladbroke Grove. In the evening, the floats leave the streets, and people continue to have fun at the many Notting-Hill-Carnival-after parties.

The Notting Hill Carnival dates for 2010 were August 29th and 30th.The proposed dates for Notting Hill Carnival 2011 are August 28th and 29th.

Seeing a volcano erupt is a wonderful experience, and you can really feel the beat by climbing to the summit (山顶) of Pacaya for a close-up view. There are guided tours every day up this highly active volcano from Antigua, giving travelers a chance to see Mother Nature at her most powerful.

Pacaya is an easy drive from Antigua, a beautiful city with many colorful houses along its old streets that are turned into art-works during its Holy Week festival. No matter when you come to Antigua, you won’t miss the Pacaya-tour companies.

But climbing Pacaya is no easy job: it is 2,560 metres high, and reaching the summit takes two to three hours of seemingly one-step-forward and two-step-back movements. As you climb, you hear the dull sounds of eruptions high above.Steaming hot remains from recent eruptions begin to line the path as you near the active summit — the McKenney Cone (火山锥).Just as though you were going to walk over to the edge of the cone, the road turns to the left and up to the relative safety of the old, inactive summit.

Many tours are timed so that you arrive at the cone of the volcano in plenty of time for sunset and the full contrast between the erupting red lava and the darkening sky.On a good day the view from the summit is extremely exciting. The active mouth boils, sending red lava over its sides, and once in a while shoots hot streams up to 100 metres into the air. There is a strong bad smell in the air even if you take care to be upwind of the cone.As evening turns deeper into the night, the burning lava quietly falls down to a side of the volcano. For you, too, it is time to get down.
