(2013·南京模拟)

He may not have learned to read and write until he was 91, but Jim Henry is becoming a literary star.

Since the 98-year-old Academy Point resident published his first book, In a Fisherman’s Language, in Nov. , 2011, he and his family have been in a world of book printings, agents, publicity, and film rights.

The book’s first printing of 780 copies were sold out in just two weeks and 1, 000 more arrived last week. A New York City film producer has contacted Henry and his family. A German television station and a Greek newspaper are doing stories about him. There’s an offer for an audio book. And people from not just around the country but the world have called and emailed wanting a book.

When he was a third-grade student, his father made him and his brother quit school so they could work odd jobs. Over the years, he hid his illiteracy(无学识)from friends and relatives by employing a variety of tricks, such as ordering what he heard someone else asked for when he went to a restaurant.

Then, seven years ago, at 91, Henry was inspired after learning about the story of George Dawson, the grandson of a slave who wanted to earn his high school diploma by learning how to read and write at 98. Dawson went on to write the book Life Is So Good.

Henry began by reading books designed for first-graders and spent countless

It looks like a cross between Noah’s Ark and something out of a 1970s science-fiction film. The futuristic Ark Hotel has been designed to withstand floods caused by rising sea levels.

- 13 -

圆学子梦想 铸金字品牌

The floating behemoth(庞然大物)is a “biosphere” regarded as a safe, self-contained shelter in case of disaster. Boasting a green, self-sustaining environment for guests, the shell-shaped hotel would withstand tidal waves and other natural disasters.

Architects say the Ark’s shell-like construction of arches and cables evenly distribute weight so it is also invulnerable(不会受伤害的)to earthquakes. The design uses solar panels and a rainwater collection system to provide inhabitants with power and water. The greenhouse-like environment also provides for thick vegetation to help with air quality and provide food sources.

Because of the see-through structure enough daylight is filtered through internal rooms to reduce the need for lighting. And to ensure quality of light, the frame is protected with a self-cleaning layer.

The Ark has been designed by Russian firm Remistudio with the assistance of the International Union of Architects’ program Architecture For Disaster Relief. Alexander Remizov, of Remistudio, said, “For architecture there are two major concerns. The first is maintenance of safety and precautions(预防措施)against extreme environmental conditions and climate changes. The second one is protection of natural environment from human activities. The Ark is an attempt to answer the challenges of our time. Provision is made for an independent life support system. All the plants are chosen according to compatibility, illumination(采光)and efficiency of oxygen producing, and with the aim of creating an attractive and comfort space. Through the crystal roof there is enough light for plants and for illuminating the inner rooms. ”

We have all heard of the smartphone and most of us will have one. Not far behind: the smart home. In the latest issue of Journal Science, Washington State University’s Diane Cook says it won’t be long before our homes act as “intelligent agents” to predict our needs and deal with tasks that improve our health, energy efficiency, even social media.

“Many homes are already halfway there, with computer chips helping

- 15 -

圆学子梦想 铸金字品牌

microwave food, record TV shows, and turn on coffee makers. What we’re trying to do is get the home to think about what you need as a whole and use different parts to do the right things. ”she says.

Cook has been working on smart homes since 2006. Some test homes in Seattle already show that the technology can help monitor the elderly and remind them to complete ordinary activities like rising, eating and taking medicine.

Similarly, the home can itself control energy use. Smart home technologies can run washers at off-peak times, turn off unneeded appliances(家用电器)and put out lights in empty rooms. Many communities, including Pullman, are testing the concept of the smart home.

While the smartphone lets people take their social media with them, the home could act like a car’s Bluetooth, making hands-free conversation from any room a reality and cameras will let the people “talk face to face from anywhere”.

Although the technology is available, technologies like in-home cameras raise privacy concerns. The technologies, like many others, face a challenge of being accepted and adopted, says Cook. She has seen that in particular with the elderly participants in her studies.

“People will soon understand what these technologies do and see how user-friendly they are. I bet some technologies will develop fast once they’re starting to be used. ”

66. According to the passage, all of the following statements about the smart home technology are TRUE except that . A. it is a completely new concept

D. the senior people who need taking care for

68. According to Paragraph 4, the smart home technology will help people . A. make more money B. use a new form of energy C. improve the energy efficiency D. develop the sense of saving

69. One of the obstacles that prevent the smart home technology from being accepted is .

A. the concern about people’s privacy B. the concern about the cost from it C. the concern about the loss of tradition D. the concern about elderly people

70. What does Cook think of the smart home technology? A. Useful but much too costly. B. Challenging but promising. C. Convenient and affordable.

Text 10

M: Attention please, ladies and gentlemen. Our bus is getting close to Cambridge, where we’ll be stopping to eat.?We’ll have our lunch in the garden of a restaurant overlooking a small park that reminds people of a very famous tree. It’s said that General George Washington took command of the army in 1775 under its very branches. It was almost 100 years later, in 1864, that the city of Cambridge celebrated the event and from that moment on, the tree was called the Washington Elm. Later the tree was attacked by insects and finally destroyed in a storm. The remains of the tree were cut down and the growth rings were counted to find out how old the tree was. Well, it seems that if Washington had accepted the command of his army under this tree he must have done so on his knees. This particular elm couldn’t have been over 3 or 4 years old in 1775. ??It is a well-known fact that Washington took command under an elm tree, but unfortunately it couldn’t have been the famous

Seen from the top of the hill(= When it is seen from the top of the hill), the city looks more beautiful.

2. 作条件状语时, 相当于if, unless引导的从句, 一般放在句首。例如: Given more attention(= If it is given more attention), the accident could have been avoided.

6. 过去分词(短语)作状语时, 有时为了强调, 前面可带连词when, while, if, though, as if, unless, until等, 以使句意更清楚。例如: If given more time, they would have done it better.

university admission, development in wisdom, emotion, health, and life attitude should never be ignored. There are many examples around us. Some top students in school have turned out not to be as successful in society as they are expected. The reason is often that the pressure from their parents allows them almost no time for other activities. Besides, punishment is by no means a wise choice to help them grow up mentally and physically.

So I suggest that you take your friends’ advice. More importantly, let her live like a lovely girl; let her have more friends and social activities; and let her make mistakes of her own as the teenagers often do.
