There is a brown female Canadian duck that weighs only four hundred fifty grams. The duck had flown to the southern state of Florida for the winter. A hunter shot it on January

fifteenth and took it to his home in the city of Tallahassee. He put it in the refrigerator. Two days later the man's wife opened the refrigerator door. The duck lifted its head and looked at her. It was alive!
The family took the duck to a doctor who treats animals. The doctor gave the duck to the Goose Creek Animal Sanctuary. Animal sanctuaries provide homes for animals and teach people about their care.
The doctor said it was easy to understand why people thought the duck was dead. He said ducks generally do not move a lot, especially after being shot. And he said its low body temperature helped it survive in the refrgerator .
That was enough to make the duck famous around the world. The Tallahassee newspaper published the story that was re-printed in many different countries. But that was not the end of the story.
Workers at the wildlife sanctuary named the duck Perky. And they arranged for the doctor to perform an operation to repair the duck's damaged wing. During the operation, Perky stopped breathing——not just once but two times. The doctor tried to save Perky by giving her oxygen through a face mask. But he finally said the duck had died. A few seconds later, however, Perky began to move. Reports say the people in the operating room were so happy that they cried.
Workers at the wildlife sanctuary say Perky will not have any more operations, It seems she had a bad reaction to the drugs that were used. Perky is expected to live at the sanctuary. Bernard Jackson is a free man today, but he has many bitter memories. Jackson spent five years in prison after a jury wrongly convicted (宣判有罪) him of raping two women. At Jackson's trial, although two witnesses testified that Jackson was with them in another location at the times of the crimes, he was convicted anyway. Why? The jury believed the testimony (证词) of the two victims, who positively identified Jackson as the man who had attacked them. The court eventually freed Jackson after the police found the man who had really committed the crimes. Many factors influence the accuracy of eyewitness testimony. For instance, witnesses sometimes see pbotographs of several suspects before they try to identify the person they saw in a lineup of people. They can become confused by seeing many photographs of similar faces. The number of people in the lineup, and whether it is a live lineup or a photograph, may also affect a witness' decision. People sometimes have difficulty identifying people of other races. The questions the police ask witnesses also have an effect on them.
Many people believe that police officers are more reliable than ordinary people. Psychologists decided to test this idea, and they discovered that it is not true. Two psychologists showed a film of crimes to both police officers and civilians (百姓) .The psychologists found no difference between the police and the civilians in correctly remembering the details of the crimes.
Despite all the possibilities for inaccuracy, courts cannot refuse eyewitness testimony from a trial. American courts depend almost completely on eyewitness testimony to resolve court cases. Sometimes it is the only evidence to a crime, such as rape. Furthermore, eyewitness testimony is often correct. Although people do sometimes make mistakes, many times they really do identify individuals correctly.
American courts depend on the ability of the twelve jurors (陪审员), and not the judges, to determine the accuracy of the witness' testimony. It is their responsibility to decide if a certain witness could actually see, hear, and remember what occurred.
In a few cases the testimony of eyewitnesses has convicted innocent people. More importantly, it has rightly convicted a larger number of guilty people; consequently, it continues to be of great value in the American judicial system.
36. Bemard Jackson was found guilty by the jury because __________. A, the police discovered evidence leading to his guilt B. the eyewitnesses confirmed the victims' testimony C. the victims insisted that he was the attacker
D. the judge believed in the victims' identification
37. An eyewitness' testimony is sometimes inaccurate because _________. A. he lacks the professional help from the police B. he has a small number of suspects in the lineup C. he is of the same race as the suspect
D. he is shown photos of many similar faces
38. Eyewitness testimony is vital because ___________, A. it is sometimes the only way to rsolve court cases B. it can be relied on to detect criminals in all cases
C. it is sometimes the only clue for police investigation D. it is more reliable than physical evidences to a crime
39. An inaccurate eyewitness testimony may lead to _____________.
5
A. the disrespect for the eyewitness B. the conviction of an innocent person C. the refusal of the case D. the disbelief in the court
40. From the text we know that ____________.
A. crime victims often fail to give positive identification of the suspects B. the jury relies more on the judge than on the eyewitness for a decision C. police identification is more reliable than that of the ordinary people D. eyewitness testimony plays an essential part in the U. S. court trial
D
It is pretty much a one-way street . While it may be common for university researchers to try their luck in the commercial world, there is very little traffic in the opposite direction. Pay has always been the biggest deterrent, as people with families often feel they cannot afford the drop m salary when moving to a university job. For some industrial scientists, however, the attractions of academia (学术界) outweigh any financial considerations.
Helen Lee took a 70% cut in salary when she moved from a senior post in Abbott Laboratories to a medical department at the University of Cambridge. Her main reason for returning to academia mid-career was to take advantage of the greater freedom to choose research questions. Some areas of inquiry have few prospects(指望) of a commercial return, and Lee's is one of them.
The impact of a salary cut is probably less severe for a scientist in the early stages of a career. Guy Grant, now a research associate at the Unilever Centre for Molecular Infornmatics at the University of Cambridge, spent two years working for a plarmaceutical (制药的) company before returning to university as a post-doctoral researcher. He took a 30% salary cut but felt it worthwhile for the greater intellectual opportunities .
Higher up the ladder, where a pay cut is usualIy more significant, the demand for scientists with a wealth of experience in industry is forcing universities to make the transition (转换) to academia more attractive, according to Lee. Industrial scientists tend to receive training that academics do not, such as how to build a multidisciplinary (多学科的) team, manage budgets and negotiate contracts. They are also well placed to bring something extra to the teaching side of an academic role that will help students get a job when they graduate, says Lee, perhaps experience in manufacturing practice or product development. \
number of undergraduates will continue in an academic career. So someone leaving university who already has the skills needed to work in an industrial lab has far more potential in the job market than someone who has spent all their time on a narrow research project.\ 41. By \a one-way skeet\ (Para.1), the author means ____________. A. university researchers, know little about the commercial world B. there is little exchange between industry and academia
C. few university professors are willing to do industrial research D. few industrial scientists would quit to work in a university.
42. The word \ most probably refers to something that _________ A. attracts people's attention B. helps to move the traffic
C. keeps someone from taking action
6
D. brings someone a financial burden
43. What was Helen Lee's major consideration when she changed her job in the middle of her career?
A. Her research interests. B. Flexible work hours.
C. Her preference for the lifestyle on campus. D. Prospects of academic accomplishments.
44. Guy Grant chose to work as researcher at Cambridge in order to ___________ A. do financially more rewarding work B. exploit better intellectual opportunities C. enricb his experience in medical research D. raise his status in the academic world
45.What contribution can industrial scientists make when they come to teach in a university? A. Help it to obtain financial support from industry. B. Turn its research towards practical applications.
C. Increase its graduates' competitiveness in the job market.
D. Develop its students' potential in research.

阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。
Life is filled with challenges. As we get older we come to realize that those challenges are the very things that shape us and make us who we are, and that it is the same with the challenges that come with friendship.
When we are faced with a challenge, we usually have two choices. We can by to beat it off, or we can decide that the thing presenting the challenge isn't worth the trouble and call it quits.
8
Although there are certainly times when calling it quits is the right thing to do, in most cases all that is needed is commitment and communication .
When we are committed to something, it means that no matter how painful or how uncomfortable something is, we will always choose to face it and work through instead of running away from it. Communication is making a space for discussion and talking about how you feel as opposed to just saying what the other person did wrong. If you can say to a friend, \my feelings hurt\ rather than \ou hurt my feelings\you are going to be able to solve the problem much faster.
In dealing with many challenges that friendship will bring to you, try to see them for what they are: small hurdles you need to jump or get through on your way through life. Nothing is so big that it is impossible to get over, and hurt only serves to make us stronger. It' s all part of growing up. It happens to everyone and some day you will look back on all of this and say, \ it made me who I am today. And that' s a good thing.\【写作内容】
