Many of us like spicy food. It is known that people in some provinces in China, such as Sichuan and Hunan, generally believe chili makes their food taste better. Some go to such an extreme that they even can not survive without spicy food. While a moderate amount of chili can make our tongues burn, our mouths wide open, and our bodies sweat, this is nothing compared with the “ghost chili”, which got its name as the world’s hottest in the Guinness World Records in 2006.

“Ghost chili” got its name because it is supposedly so hot that it can scare away ghosts. Autumn is peak season for what the Los Angeles Times writer Mark Magnier described as the “innocent-looking, thumb-sized devil (魔鬼)”. Every year there are competitions in which “ghost chili” beats other members in its family and wins the world title as the hottest.

So just how hot is this powerful pepper? “It creates a ribbon of fire from lips to tongue to newly upset stomach. The discomfort lasts several hours,” Magnier wrote in his report about the magic power of “ghost chili”.

Thoudam Anand is an Indian government worker who grows “ghost chili” peppers in his garden. He told Magnier about the first time he ate “ghost chili” – when his friends secretly put some into his food. “Unbearable pain, panic … and teeth gnashing followed,” Anand said. An elderly neighbor suggested a local remedy (疗法): go and eat mud. He did – he ran to the nearest pond. “I would’ve swallowed anything to cool down,” he said. “And since I had no taste buds left, the mud tasted just fine.”

In fact, “ghost chili” is so hot that it is often not even described as “food”. Local Indian airport authorities will confiscate (没收) souvenir “ghost chili” peppers as they are listed as potential hijacking weapons. According to AFP, researchers in the country are testing grenades, sprays and gas made from “ghost chili” to fight terrorists and help women defend themselves. “It’s all-natural,” said Lokendra Singh, director of the Defense Research and Development Organization’s lab in northeast India.

50. From the passage above we can learn that the “ghost chili” ________. A. is very powerful mainly because of its small size B. looks quite ordinary and normal like other chilies C. can be used to help people scare the ghosts away D. often makes people unable to survive without it

51. The example of Anand is given in paragraph 4 to tell us ________. A. it’s quite fun to taste the “ghost chili” B. it’s dangerous to grow the “ghost chili” C. mud tastes better than the “ghost chili” D. the “ghost chili” tastes extremely hot

52. Saying “I would’ve swallowed anything to cool down,” Anand meant ________. A. he would try anything to get better B. he preferred chilies to anything else C. he regretted eating the “ghost chili” D. he was not very particular about food
