It was the last day of the final examination in a college. On the steps of a building, a group of engineering students were waiting for the last exam. On their faces was confidence.

They knew the exam would be easy. The professor (a teacher at a college) had said they could bring any books or notes during the test.

Right after they came into the classroom. The professor handed out the papers. There were only five questions on it.

Three hours passed. Then the professor began to collect the papers. The students no longer looked confident. On their faces was nervous expression. The professor watched the worried faces before him, and then asked, “How many of you have completed all five questions?” No hand was raised. “How many of you have answered four?” Still no hands. “Three? Two?” The students moved restlessly in their seats. “One, then? Certainly somebody has finished one.” But the class kept silent. The professor said, “That is exactly what I expected. I just want to make you know clearly that even though you have completed four years of engineering. There are still many things about the subject you don’t know. These questions you could not answer are common in everyday practice.” Then, smiling, he added, “You will all pass this course, your education has just begun.”

The years have obscured the name of this professor, but not the lesson he taught.

Many Chinese students think American students enjoy more freedom than them at school. But American schools also have their rules. If the students break the rules, they will get punishment, too.

On the first day of a new term, 128 students of Morton High School were sent home for not wearing the wrong clothes. There are altogether 1,200 students in the school. Usually only 20 students break the school dress rule every day. So the headmaster Theresa Mayerik said it was the worst new term she had ever seen.

At Morton High School, students’ favorite clothing such as baggy(宽大的)trousers, low-necked shirts and tank tops(紧身短背心)are not allowed in classrooms. Some students think they have the right to choose what the clothes they want to wear, but the headmaster doesn’t think so. “I’d be supportive if half the school was sent home, because 99% will get the message that our school are for education.” “Freedom” does not mean “free of restrictions(约束)”. That is to say there is no total freedom in the world, no matter in the US or in China.

“No man is an island” is wel l-known from John Donne’s Devotion, written more than three hundred years ago. Even now people still agree with him. No one can live a completely isolated life. Without other people, life becomes empty and sad. We all need to have friends.

For some of us, making friends is not difficult. However, feeling sheepish (窘迫的, 难为情的), we may not want to make the first move. And it is difficult at times to keep the friends we already have.

There are many books about friendship, but Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People, written in 1936, is the most famous. This book is about getting along with other people became a best seller. It was later put into 28 languages.

2. Go out of your way to be nice. Find time to do some special things for other people. Making some soup for a sick neighbor may seem like a small thing to you, but it will make your neighbor feel much better.

3. Remember names. It says that the sweetest music to a person’s ears is the soun d of his or her own name.

4. Be open-minded.Try to understand other people’s ways and ideas, and learn something from them.

5. Listen patiently. When someone is talking to you, look at him or her. Listen carefully and say something when necessary.
