The book The Origin of Species by Charles Darwin is probably one o f the most famous books ever written by a scientist. Yet it is a boo k which the writer did not want to publish; he only agreed to make his theory known to the public when he was forced to by his friend s.

In 1831, the British Government sent a ship called Beagle to South America to make maps of the coast. At that time, Darwin was a yo

3

ung man in his twenties who had studied science in Edinburgh and Cambridge. Through a friend, he was offered the job of studying th e plants and animals of the different countries that the Beagle was to visit. Darwin‘s father told him not to go, and the captain of the Beagle said that he did not like the shape of Darwin‘s nose; but tha t did not stop him, and in December of that year, Darwin sailed for South America. He spent five years on the ship, collecting many sa mples and writing down his observations about the living things he f ound.

When he returned to England, he tried to work out a theory to expl ain what he had observed. It was clear that many species were con nected with each other in some way, without being exactly the sam e. Why was this? Two years after his return, he developed a theory: only the strongest or the cleverest could survive difficult conditions. Over time, the species changes slowly to fit the environment. Former Yugoslav leader Slobodan Milosevic was found dead last Sat urday in his cell at the Hague-based International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. The 64-year-old had been on trial there s ince February 2002.

Born in provincial Pozarevac in 1941, he was the second son of a p riest and a school teacher. Both of his parents died when he was st ill a young adult. The young Milosevic was ―untypical‖, says Slavolju b Djukic, his unofficial biographer. He was ―not interested in sports, and avoided excursions and used to come to school dressed in the old-fashioned way –white shirt and tie.‖ One of his friends said, h e could ―imagine him as a station-master or punctilious civil servan t‖.

Indeed that is exactly what he might have become, had he not mar ried Mira. She was widely believed to be his driving force.

At university and beyond he did well. He worked for various firms a nd was a communist party member. By 1986 he was head of Sebia‘s Committer. But still he had not yet really been noticed.

It was Kosovo that gave him his chance. An autonomous province o f Serbia, Kosovo was home to an Albanian majority and a Serbian minority. In 1989, he was sent there to calm fears of Serbians who felt they were discriminated against. But instead he played the nati onalist card and became their champion. In so doing, he changed in to a ruthless and determined man. At home with Mira he plotted th

Education is not an end, but a means to an end. In other words, w e do not educate children only for the purpose of educating them. Our purpose is to fit them for life.

In some modem countries it has for some time been fashionable to think that by free education for all —one can solve all the problem s of society and build a perfect nation. But we can already see that free education for all is not enough; we find in such countries a far larger number of people with university degree; they refuse to do what they think ―low‖ work; and, in fact, manual work is thought to be dirty and shameful in such countries. But we have only to think a moment to understand that the work of a completely uneducated farmer is far more important than that of a professor; we can live without education, but we die if we have no food. If no one cleaned our streets and took the rubbish away from our houses, we should get terrible diseases in our towns.

In fact, when we say that all of us must be educated to fit us for li fe, it means that we must be educated in such a way that, firstly, e ach of us can do whatever work suited to his brains and ability and, secondly, that we can realize that all jobs are necessary to society, and that is very bad to be ashamed of one‘s work. Only such a ty pe of education can be considered valuable to society. (17.5分)

After 10 seasons wearing the No. 8 on his back, Kobe Bryant will b ecome No 24 next season. The reason for the surprising decision by the Los Angeles Lakers super guard last week has become a hot to pic for debate.

Bryant wore No at when he was in early high school, but he change d to No 33 in his senior year. He switched to No 8 when he was se lected by the Lakers in 1996, and has been not changed since. Bryant has refused to explain the decision until the end of the play-offs. So guessing Bryant‘s motive has become a popular game amo ng NBA fans and newspaper columnists.

There are all kinds of speculations. Many say that Bryant wants to l eave the past behind and have a fresh start. He has often been crit

8

icized for playing to benefit himself and not the team as a whole. O thers say that he may be trying to compare himself to Michael Jord an. Jordan was famous for his No 23 jersey. Some, such as NBC Sp ort columnist Michael Ventre, argue that it is ―all about money‖. Bry ant will make more money by selling new jersey to his fans.

Some speculations are more about fun. For example, there is an opi nion that Kobe is actually just a dihard fan of the popular TV drama ―24‖.

All this talk has turned the number changed into a major issue. It s eems that there is a lot of fuss over something that should be prett y simple.

Jersey numbers have their own special significance in American spor ts, especially basketball. Players choose their number when they joi n a team and they usually stick with that number for the rest of th eir career. When a great player retires, his team will honor him by retiring his number.

To some extent, the jersey is the player, and the player is jersey. T hus, when you see the famous No 23 for the Chicago Bulls, you im mediately think about Michael Jordan. A No 32 Miami Heats jersey r ecalls the image of Shaquille O‘ Neal, and the Houston rockets‘ No 11 belongs only to Yao Ming.

Lots of stories are behind players‘ jersey number selections. Jordan said that he choose No 23 because it was roughly half of 45. Jorda n‘s elder brother wore the No 45 in college. Yao Ming once revealed that the No 11 stands for two people in love –meaning him and h is girlfriend Ye Li.(17.5分)

In the past 10 years, America‘s National Basketball Association (NBA) has grown increasingly dependent on the rest of the world to suppl y players.

When Michael Jordan and Larry Bird won gold in Barcelona in 1992, the Americans were praised for teaching the world how to play bas ketball. This season, however, 20 percent of NBA rosters (花名册) wi ll be filled by non-Americans. NBA commissioner David Stern happily embraces the trend. On a visit to Paris in October, Stern outlined his vision for the future, which is likely to see Europe hosting NBA games by 2010.

The NBA is now planning to take China by storm.

―Our experience in China has been that it is going to be explosive i n its growth,‖ said Stern. The strategy in China is TV. ―We‘v e made 14 deals in China with local and national networks on cable and sa tellite.‖ The success Chinese centre Yao Ming has paved the way for the NBA marketing blitz in China. The NBA, which is broadcasted in more than 200 countries in 42 languages, will put that to the test in October 2004 when the Houston Rockets play two pre-season ga mes against the Sacramento Kings in Beijing market to compensate for tough times on home soil.

Others, such as Houston Roc kets‘ Chinese centre Yao Ming—No.1 draft pick in 2002—and the De troit Pistons‘ 18-year-old Serb Darko Milicic—number two overall in t his year‘s draft—are icons (偶像) in waiting. The British psychoanalyst John Bowlby maintains that separation fro m the parents during the sensitive―attachment‖ period from birth to three may scar a child‘s personality and I predispose to emotional problems in later life. Some people have drawn the conclusion from Bowlby‘s work that children should not be subjected to day care bef

18

ore the age of three because of the parental separation it entails,a nd many people do believe this. But there are also arguments again st such a strong conclusion.Firstly, anthropologists point out that t he insulated love affair between children and parents;found in mode m societies does not usually exist in traditional societies. For exampl e,in some tribal societies, such as the Ngoni, the father and mothe r of a child did not rear their infant alone—far from it'.Secondly,co mmon sense tells US that day care would not be so widespread tod ay if parents care-takers found children had problems with it.Statist ical studies of this kind have not yet been carried out,and even if t hey were, the results would be certain to be complicated and contro versial.Thirdly.in the last decade there have been a number of car eful American studies of children in day care, and they have uniform ly reported that day care had a neural or slightly positive effect on children‘s developme nt.But tests that have had to be used to meas ure this development are not widely enough accepted to settle the i ssue.

But Bowlby‘s analysis raises the possibility that early day care has d elayed effects. The possibility that such care might lead to,say,mo re mental illness or crime 15 or 20 years later can only be explored by the use of statistics.Whatever the long—term effects, parents s ometimes find the immediate effects difficult to deal with。.Children under three are likely to protest at leaving their parents and show unhappiness. At the age of three or three and a half almost all chil dren find the transition to nursery easy, and this is undoubtedly why more and more parents make use of child care at this time. The m atter, then,is far from clear-cuff,though experience and available e vidence indicate that early care is reasonable for infants.(17.5分) 31). Which of the following statements would Bowlby support?(3.5分)

(A) Statistical studies should be carried out to assess the positive ef fect of day car
