Although it is a common belief that sleeping for at least eight hours a night is vital for health and well—being. The six year study involving more than 1.1 million Americans older than 30 found that those who slept for 1ess than eight hours were far from doing themselves any long-term harm.

Dr.Kripke said.―We don’t know if long sleep periods lead to death. Additional studies are needed to determine if setting your alarm clock earlier will actually improve your health.‖

Those who slept for eight hours were 12 per cent more likely to die during the six—year period of the study, when other factors such as diet and smoking were taken into account.

Even those who spent a mere five hours a night in bed lived longer than those who slept eight or more hours. However, an increasing death rate was found among those who slept for less than five hours.

Dr.Kripke said.―Previous sleep studies have indicated that both short-and long-duration(持续时间)sleep had higher mortality rates. However, none of those studies were large enough to distinguish the difference between seven and eight hours a night, until now.‖

Einstein Named ―Person of the Century‖

Albert Einstein, whose theories on space time and matter helped unravel the secrets of the atom and of the universe, was chosen as ―Person of the Century‖ by Time magazine on Sunday.

A man whose very name is synonymous with scientific genius, Einstein has come to represent more than any other person the flowering of 20th century scientific though that set the stage for the age of technology.

―The world has changed far more in the past 100 years than in any other century in history. The reason is not political or economic, but technological—technologies that flowed directly from advances in basic science,‖ wrote theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking in a Time essay explaining Einstein’s significance. _____ (1) _____.

7

Identity Theft

College students have a lot to worry about: tests, quizzes, homework, organizations, and jobs. One thing they might not think they should worry about is identity theft. Identity theft is actually a big problem on college campuses and students are easy targets. Knowing who to protect yourself against identity theft is the first thing you need to do for yourself. One of the major reasons why students are targets is because they are na?ve. Many students don’t know or don’t realize the dangers of giving out their personal information unless they have already been through it or they are older. A majority of the time, students get sucked into getting free stuff just for applying for a credit card. Students are one of the easiest targets for scammers(骗子). In order to protect yourself from having your identity stolen, you need to understand how scammers get your personal information. For students, being frugal is just about a must. One of the costs they may skimp on is paying their own Internet. Instead, they will log on to someone else’s WiFi or an unsecured network. While this may cut down on costs while you are in college, there is a chance that someone will be able to get your personal information. These unsecured networks may be full of people who are simply sitting and waiting for you to log on to your bank account, shop account, shop online, apply for a job online, or apply for a credit card online. If you are going to shop online or do any of the previously mentioned activities, make sure you are on a secured network that has the proper privacy settings.

Something that students may not think about is shredding(撕碎)their documents. It is very easy for anyone to have their identity stolen if they don’t shred important documents, bills, or even credit card offers. You should always shred anything that has any type of personal information, especially those with account numbers, your social security number or even your birthday. If you get a credit card offer saying you are pre-approved, so on and so forth, you need to shred it before throwing it away. Some people go through others’trash and take the pre-approved cards. They can then use it to open a credit card under your name, stealing your identity. While you have many things to think about while in college, you should always think about the information you are giving out. Remember never to give out your bank account information or PIN (personal identification number), even to a friend. Also, watch out for scams(骗局)like signing up for a credit card to get a free shirt; your identity may not be stolen right away, but that information could be used in the future. Shred any and all personal documentation before throwing it away. Moreover, when you do shred your documentation, make sure it can’t be put back together.

1. What you need to do first for yourself is _____.

2. The dangers of releasing personal information are unknown to many students _____. 3. A good chance stands that your personal information will be stolen _____. 4. If a credit card offer is said to be pre-approved, you need to _____. 5. When you do shred your documentation, make sure _____.

9

A. it can’t be put back together

B. knowing how to protect yourself against identity theft C. unless they have already been through it or they are older D. because college students aren’t experienced E. shred it before throwing it away

F. while you log on to someone else’s WiFi or an unsecured network

No one in my family could believe Allegra had any disability, much less one as severe as hers. To them a disability was physical, something you could see. They knew her as a happy, normal child. That’s how it is with a learning disability – you don’t see obvious physical symptoms. But as she grew out of preschool. She would pretend to read – I knew she was pretending because the book was upside down. She withdrew into her own world where she could fantasize about being a ballet dancer, a Broadway actress or a figure skater. In the real world, ballet classes and music lessons led only to confusion, frustration and, ultimately, disappointment. As for school, there was no way she could be included in a mainstream classroom. I went through every special school in New York, only to be told over and over: ―She doesn’t belong here.‖ The last blow came a few months after the diagnosis, when I was at a pay phone on 72nd Street, waiting for an answer from the very last school on my list. Finally a cold voice came on – I can still hear it – and said: ―I’m sorry, but we feel this isn’t the place for her.‖ I hung up and stared at the phone in tears. I had lived my life as the daughter of Henry Ford II, and for the first time in my life I faced a problem that neither money nor position could solve. I nearly gave up, but I knew I couldn’t. Without me, my daughter stood no chance of making it.

D. she was living in her dreams in conflict with the real world 3. The expression ―a mainstream classroom‖ (para. 3) refers to _____.

A. the last blow B. the last school C. special schools D. normal education

10

4. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that _____. A. the author would ask Henry Ford II for help B. the author would continue to help her daughter

C. the author would leave New York for the sake of her daughter D. the author had to use money or position to deal with the problem 5. The phrase ―making it‖ (para. 4) probably means ____.

Most of these damaging earthquakes occur either in a narrow belt which surrounds the Pacific Ocean or in a line which extends from Burma to the Alps in Europe. Some of the destruction is directly caused by the quake itself. An example of this is the collapse of buildings as a result of the quake itself. Other damage results from landslides or major fires which are initiated by the quake. There are about a million quakes a year. Fortunately, however, not all of them are destructive. The intensity of an earthquake is measured on the Richter Scale, which goes from 0 upward. The highest scale recorded to date is 8.9. Major damage generally occurs from quakes ranging upwards from 6.0. The actual cause of the quake itself is the breaking of rocks at or below the earth’s surface. This is produced by pressure which scientists believe may be due to a number of reasons, two of which are the expansion and contraction of the earth’s crust and continental drift. In order to limit damage and to prevent some of the suffering resulting from earthquakes, scientists are working on ways to enable accurate prediction. Special instruments are used to help people record, for example, shaking of the earth. Scientists are trying to find methods that will enable them to indicate the exact time, location and size of an earthquake. Certain phenomena have been observed which are believed to be signs of imminent earthquakes. These include strange behaviors of some animals, the changes in the content of

twenty-five million dollars in money and investments to help the poor. The company says the

effort involves using the power of information and technology to help people improve their lives. Aleem Walji works for Google.org -- the part of the company that gives money to good

causes. He said the company’s first project will help identify where infectious (传染性的) diseases are developing. In Southeast Asia and Africa, for example, Google.org will work with partners to strengthen early-warning systems and take action against growing health threats.

Google.org’s second project will invest in ways to help small and medium-sized businesses grow. Walji says microfinance (小额信贷) is generally small, short-term loans that create few jobs. Instead, he says Google.org wants to develop ways to bring investors and business owners together to create jobs and improve economic growth.

Google.org will also give money to help two climate-change programs announced earlier this year. One of these programs studies ways to make renewable (再生的) energy less costly than coal-based energy. The other is examining the efforts being made to increase the use of electric cars.

The creators of Google have promised to give Google.org about one percent of company profits and one percent of its total stock value every year. Aleem Walji says this amount may increase in the future.

阅读下面短文,请从短文后所给各题的4个选项中选出1个最佳选项。 When John Todd was six, both his parents died. A kind-hearted aunt in North Killingworth agreed to take John and give him a home. He was brought up by her and lived in her home until he left to study for ministry. His aunt fell seriously ill and feared she was about to die. In great distress she wrote John a letter in which she asked him to tell her what death would be like. Here is the letter he sent in reply: It is now thirty-five years since I, as a little boy of six, was left quite alone in the world. You sent me word you would give me a home and be a kind mother to me. I have never forgotten the day when I made the long journey to your house. I can still recall my disappointment when, instead of coming for me yourself, you sent your servant James to fetch me. I well remember my tears and anxiety as I rode off to my new home. Night fell before we finished the journey, and as it grew dark I became lonely and afraid. ―Do you think she’ll go to bed before we get there?‖ I asked James anxiously. ―Oh, no,‖ he said reassuringly. ―She’ll stay up for you. When we get out of these woods you’ll see her candle shining in the window.‖ Presently we did ride out into the clearing, and there, sure enough, was your candle. I

remember you were waiting at the door, that you put your arms close about me and that you lifted me – a tired little boy – down from the horse. You had a fire burning on the hearth, a hot supper waiting on the stove. After supper you took me to my new room, heard me say my prayers, and then sat beside me until I fell asleep. You probably realized why I am recalling all this to your memory. Someday soon God will send for you, to take you to a new home. Don’t fear the summons (召唤), the strange journey, or the dark messenger of death who will fetch you. God can be trusted to do as much for you as you were kind enough to do for me so many years ago. At the end of the road you will find love and a welcome waiting, and you will be safe in God’s care. I shall watch you and pray for you till you are out of sight, and then wait for the day when I shall make the journey myself and find you waiting at the end of the road to greet me.

Science is a method of answering theoretical questions; technology is a method of solving _2_ (practice) problems and sometimes __3__ (create) new problems out of the \facts and relationships between observable phenomena in nature and with establishing theories that serve to organize these facts and relationships; technology has to do with tools, techniques, and procedures for implementing the findings of science. Another __5__ (distinct) between science and technology has to do with the progress in each.

Progress in science excludes the human factor. And this is just so. Scientists, who seek to understand the universe and know the __6__ (true) within the highest degree of accuracy and certainty, cannot pay attention to their own or other people's likes or dislikes or popular ideas about the fitness of things. What scientists discover may shock or __7__ (angry) people - as did Darwin's theory of evolution(进化). But even an unpleasant truth is more than likely to be useful; besides, we have the option(选择权) of refusing to believe it ! But hardly so with technology. We do not have the option of refusing to hear the noise __8__ (produce) by an aircraft; we do not have the option of refusing to breathe __9__ (pollute) air; and we do not have the option of living in a non-atomic age. Unlike science, progress in technology must be measured in terms of the human factor. Technology must be our slave and not the reverse. The rightful purpose of technology is to _10_ (service) people - people in general, not merely some people; and future generations, not merely those who presently wish to gain advantage for themselves.

Cloning:Future Perfect?

① A clone is an exact copy of a plant or animal produced from any one cell. Since Scottish scientists reported that they had managed to clone a sheep named Dolly in 1997 research into cloning has grown rapidly. In May 1998,scientists in Massachusetts managed to create two identical calves(牛犊)using cloning technology A mouse has also been cloned successfully. But the debate over cloning humans really started when Chicago physicist Richard Seed made a surprising announcement:―We will have managed to clone a human being within the next two years,‖he told the world.

② Seed’s announcement provoked a lot of media attention, most of it negative. In Europe nineteen nations have already signed an agreement banning human cloning and in the US the President announced:―We will be introducing a law to ban all human cloning and many states in the US will have passed anti—cloning laws by the end of the year‖

③ Many researchers are not so negative about cloning. They are worried that laws banning human cloning will threaten important research. In March, the New England Journal of Medicine called any plan to ban research on cloning humans were seriously mistaken. Many researchers also believe that in spite of attempts to ban it,human cloning will have become routine by 2010 because it is impossible to stop the progress of science.

④ Is there reason to fear that cloning will lead to a nightmare world? The public has been bombarded(轰炸)with newspaper articles, television shows and films,as well as cartoons.Such information is often misleading, and makes people wonder what on earth the scientists will be doing next.

⑤ Within the next five to ten years scientists will probably have found a way of cloning humans. It could be that pretty soon we will be able to choose the person that we want our child to look like. But how would it feel to be a clone among hundreds, the anti—cloners ask Pretty cool, answer the pro-cloners(赞成克隆的人).

The Power of Positive Words in the Family

As a writer and psychotherapist(心理医师), I have been using words carefully most of my life. While counseling a husband and wife, I notice that a __1__ word can stir their emotions and take their conversation to a dark place that they both know is negative.

World peace ___2__ with peace in the family. As a therapist, I’ve heard many adults recite hurtful words they heard decades ago from a parent or a brother or sister. For example, words of extreme praise can do __4__ for the injured ego(自我)of a child or spouse.
