In Atlanta, the USA, there is a popular restaurant which is very special. In the restaurant, waiters no longer throw uneaten food into trash cans. Instead, the food is used to make compost(混合肥料).

I was fifteen months old, a happy, carefree kid until the day I fell. I landed on a glass rabbit which cut my eye badly enough to blind it. Mama was trying to save the eye, but failed. So my scary, sightless, cloudy and gray eye lived on with me.

I walked with my face looking at the floor so people would not see the ugly me. Sometimes people, even strangers, asked me embarrassing questions. When the kids played games, I was always the “monster”. I always felt like I was freak. “Hold your head up high and face the world.” Mama had started to tell me that when I was young. “People will see your beautiful soul,” She continued this message whenever I wanted to hide.

Those words have meant different things to me over the years. As a little child, I thought Mama meant, “Be careful or you will fall down because you are not looking.” As a teenager, I found that when I held my head up high and let people know me, they liked me. I let them recognize the intelligence and beauty behind both eyes.

When I met the man who became my husband, we looked each other straight in the eye, and he told me I was beautiful inside and out. He meant it.

My mama’s love and encouragement gave me the confidence to overcome my own doubt. ( ) 66. It’s clear that the writer was_____ before the accident.

The first game was played on December 15th, 1891.The first game had a peach basket nailed to either end of the school’s gymnasium, and had two teams of nine players. The ball that they used was a soccer ball.

The original rules did not include what is known today as the dribble(带球),and only allowed the ball to be moved up or down the court by way of passes between players. It was on January 15th, 1892. The rules to the game were published in the newspaper.

Do you want to stay away from colds? 1

Compared to unhappy people, those who are cheerful and relaxed are less likely to suffer from colds, according to new study. It’s possible that being happy helps the body to fight illnesses, say the researchers from New York University. “ 2 ” said the study’s chief researcher Sheldon Cohen.

In an earlier study, Cohen found that people who were cheerful and lively caught coughs and colds less often. 3 . In this study, Cohen’s study interviewed 193 adults every day for two weeks. During the interviews, the people told the researchers about the happy or sad feelings they had that day.

After the two weeks, the people were given colds by doctors and had to stay alone in a room for six days.

4 But for people who said they felt happy during the research period, their illness was less serious and lasted for a shorter time.

Cohen believes that when people experienced positive feelings, their body may produce a chemical that helps fight illness and disease.

5 . A. So if you are worried about your health, look at the bright side more often B. People who showed positive feelings were also less likely to tell their doctors that they felt ill. C. “It seems that positive(积极的) feelings may reduce the danger of illness,” D. Put on a happy face. E. The result showed that everyone in the study was equally likely to get ill. F. More often than not, it’s easy for us to catch a cold. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. B. 阅读下面短文,补全表格中所缺的信息。(共5小题,每小题1分;计5分) Do you like reading books? How do you usually do it? Smart phones and e-readers have

become more common in recent years. Some people worry that the days of paper books will be gone. But recent surveys have shown that traditional books are still popular among readers.

Research Company Nielsen found that in the UK, sales of e-books are falling while sales of

paper books are rising. More surprisingly, it’s young people who are buying the most paper books. Another survey of university students from the United States, Slovakia, Japan and Germany also show that 92 percent of them prefer paper books.

So what is behind the paper book comeback?

The most popular reason given was:” I like to hold the product.” It’s true that paper books bring

a very different reading experience. Slovakian students said that they like the smell of paper books. Other students said that they get a sense of satisfaction when they finish reading a paper book and they enjoy seeing it on the bookshelf.

Paper books can also be very personal objects to reading lovers. Mandy people like to sign

their name on the inside comer. If the cover gets bent or there’s a stain(污点) made on the pages from coffee of food, all the better. These accidents make the book even more personal. It’s as if readers of paper books make friends with them.

This friendship people develop with books isn’t just sentimental(富有情感的). Research has shown that readers remember more information reading from paper books than e-books. People also more easily ended up with headaches or sore eyes while reading e-books.

It seems that paper books, which have been in production since the 15th century, still have an attraction. So why not pick up a book and start reading?
