(1) “I was too busy.” or “I didn’t have time.”

Daniel’s parents were worried about him. “He shouldn’t go through life making

excuses all the time.” his father said. “No one will trust him to do anything.” He won’t

be able to keep a job. No sensible(明智的) girl will marry him.”

(2) “I have an idea.” his father said. “If this doesn’t work, nothing will.”

The next day was Daniel’s birthday. He was really looking forward to getting exciting

there wasn’t. Sadly he said to his parents at dinner, “today’s my birthday.”

“Oh,” his father said. “So it is. I forgot.”

“Well, yes.” his father said. “We have a really good excuse for forgetting your

birthday, Daniel.” We didn’t remember your birthday because we were too busy.”

Poor Daniel! He never had a silly excuse for not doing something again.

What’s your idea of a perfect mom? In America, moms of the 1950s and 60s in the

TV plays were the “perfect” examples. They always made freshly cooked meals and

had a tidy house. It was their full-time job to care for the children and the home. It

meant that the home was the real centre of mothers’ lives. But that was 40-50 years In the U.S., in 1960s, society began to change. The women’s liberation

One of the most well-know directors of out tome is Stephen Spielberg. He was

born in Cincinnati on 18 December 1946. His father was an electric engineer and his

mother was a performing pianist. His sister, Anne Spielberg, became a screenwriter

who wrote the stories for many famous films.

Stephen had always wanted to be a director ever since he was a young boy. When

he was just 13 years old, he made a 40-minute film. It won a local competition. Three

years later, he produced a film called Firelight, which made one hundred dollar’s

profit at the cinema in his hometown. Many of the ideas from this film were later

used for one of his most famous films called close encounters of the Third kind.

When he was 18 years old, he wanted to go to film school so that he could

improve his skills and become an even better director. Unluckily, he was unsuccessful

in getting a place at this school so he went to a university in California to study

English. Even though he had failed to get into the school he wanted to go to, he

didn’t let this stop him following his dream to become a great director.

How do you feel when you have to make a speech in front of class? What about when you go to a birthday party? Do you get really shy? Shyness means feeling nervous or frightened when you’re around other people. Experts have found that more than 80 percent of middle school students feel afraid to be the center of attention. Some kids are born shy. Some become shy later because of their life experience. It’s OK if it takes you a while to feel yourself again when you go to a new place or meet new people. In fact, everyday gets a little shy sometimes. It’s just a case of how much. But some become so shy that they won’t go to a restaurant because they are too nervous to order and pay for their food. Some are afraid of meeting new people, so they seldom go outside. This kind of shyness can be bad for a person. If shyness doesn’t stop you from doing something you want to do, being shy isn’t a very big problem. Some people are also good at working with others because they think more for other people. Some great people in history were shy, too. You see, being shy isn’you

Researchers(研究者) have announced(宣布) the result of two studies on the health effects of the drug aspirin(阿司匹林). One study shows aspirin can sharply reduce the chance that a healthy, older man will suffer from a heart attack(心脏病). The study offered two new results from earlier findings.

It said taking one aspirin pill every other day helped only healthy men over the age of fifty. It has said aspirin gave the greatest protection against heart attacks to men with low blood cholesterol(胆固醇) levels. Earlier in the United States began a major aspirin study in the early 1980s. It included 22,000 healthy men doctors. All were between the ages of forty and eighty-fourmen did not know which kind of pill they were taking. The doctors who took aspirin suffered from heart attacks. Tens of them died. 239 men who did not take aspirin suffered from heart attacks. Twenty-six of them died.

The researchers said the doctors’ study provides clear proof that taking aspirin can prevent a first heart attack in healthy, older men. They said, however, the result does not mean every man over the age of fifty should take aspirin. They said aspirin
