Part Four Short Passage

Children who do not get enough good food in the first two years of life suffer lasting damage. They may be underdeveloped or underweight. They may suffer from poor health or limited intelligence. In addition, poorly nourished children are more likely to drop out of school and earn less money as adults.

Too little food is the first cause of poor nutrition. But many children who live in homes with plenty of food suffer for other reasons. For instance, mothers often fail to give their newly born babies their first breast milk. It is full of nutrients that improve a baby’s ability to fight infections and disease. Poor nutrition is thirdly linked to economic growth in poor countries. Moreover, a lack of nutrition in early childhood can cost developing nations up to three percent of their yearly earnings. Many of these countries have economics that are growing at a rate of two to three percent yearly. In fact, their economic growth could be doubled if they improved nutrition.

The developing countries should change their policies to deal with the lack of nutrition. Instead of directly providing food, educational programs in health and nutrition should be given to mothers with young babies. Besides, cleaner living conditions and improvements in health care are highly recommended. Questions:

1. What is the passage mainly talking about? (B)

2. What may NOT result from the lack of nutrition? (D)

3. Which of the following is NOT a reason for children’s lack of nutrition? (A)

4. If a developing country improved nutrition, how much its yearly economic growth rate would be? (A)

5. What is highly recommended by the passage to avoid the lack of nutrition? (C)

A new study shows that six people die every minute from smoking. That equals 3 million deaths around the world every year. It describes smoking as the biggest cause to deadly disease among grown-ups in industrial countries.

The World Health Organization says 70% of Chinese men smoke more than 15 cigarettes each day. In Latin America about 50% of the men are smokers. There are also a very large number of smokers in the former Soviet Union and in the east Europe. And 25% of all smoking deaths world-wide are in those areas of the world. Scientists say smoking will kill 50% of the smokers.

Smoking is known to cause lung cancer. It can also lead to cancer of the mouth and other parts of bodies. Experts say that people will reduce their chance of dying from smoking if they stop smoking completely. They say smokers who give up smoking can improve their health.
