Valentine’s Day is on 14, February each year. It is a day for lovers, and one of the loveliest holidays in the United States.

Very few Americans know the story of Valentine’s Day. One English story says that more than 2,000 years ago the ancient Romans celebrate a holiday for lovers. As part of the celebration, girls wrote names on pieces of paper and put them in a large container. Boys reached their hands into the container and pulled one out. The girl whose name was written on the paper became his lover or sweetheart for a year. Then came a Roman priest Valentinus, who secretly performed marriage ceremonies for many young lovers against Roman King’s order. The Roman Emperor got angry

It is very popular to send cards decorated with hearts and flowers to express love. Today many Americans like to send humorous cards to their husbands, wives, mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, relatives, and even special friends. Some enjoy the joke of sending ―guess who‖ cards to a person he or she secretly admires. Sometimes they put their love message in a heart-shaped box of chocolates, or a bunch of flowers tied with red ribbons. Candy, perfume, jewelry or a picture with a heart and Cupid(the Roman god of love), who is armed with a bow and arrow, are also sent to express love. Many couples arrange romantic dinners by candlelight for this occasion. Universities also hold a Sweetheart Ball for the young students to celebrate Valentine’s Day. 60. A caring mother is the single most important factor in Preventing teenagers from abusing(滥用)drugs and alcohol, researchers said on Friday. An international study showed that teenagers living with both parents are less likely to suffer from alcohol and drug problems, and a strong maternal bond is the most effective way to fight against them.

―These findings suggest that living with both parents may prevent drug use.‖said Dr.McArdle,of Newcastle University in northern England, who led the study.―They also suggest that attachment(感情眷念),particularly to mothers,is a more effective factor and that this is truly across cultures and substances.‖ The report, which is published in the journal Addiction, involved nearly 4,000 teenagers in England,Ireland,Italy,Germany and the Netherlands. They were questioned about their use of several kinds of drugs and alcohol. The teenagers also filled in questionnaires about their relationship with their parents and grandparents, how well they were supervised(监护)after school and whether they were allowed to meet friends at home.

―Both the quality of family relationships and the structure of families have significant influences on youth drug use,‖McArdle said in a statement. But he added a strong maternal bond offered the greatest protection against developing drug habits. The rate of drug abuse among teenagers living with both parents and who had a good relationship with their mother was 16.6 percent. If either factor was missing ,the drug abuse rate rose to 32 percent.More than 42 percent of teenagers living in one parent families who did not have a strong bond with their mother used drugs.

Two American scientists told the people in industrial nations that they would be much healthier if they ate more of the same kind of foods eaten by humans living more than 10,000 years ago.

The scientists say that the human body has changed very little since human first appeared on earth, but the way we live has changed greatly. Our body has not been able to deal with these changes in life style and this has led to new kinds of sicknesses. These new sicknesses were not known in ancient times. So they are called ―diseases of civilization(文明)‖. Many cancers and diseases of the blood system, including heart attacks and strokes(中风)are examples of such diseases.

Scientists noted that early stone-age people used very little alcohol (酒精) or tobacco, probably none. Ancient people also got a great deal of physical exercise, but a change in food is one of the main differences between life in ancient times and life today.

Stone-age people hunted wild animals for their meat, which had much less fat than farm animals. They also ate a lot of fresh wild vegetables, and fruits. They did not use milk and other dairy products(乳制品), and they made very little use of grains. But today, we eat a large amount of dairy products and grain foods. We eat six times more salt than stone-age people. We eat more sugar. We eat twice as much fat but only one third as much protein and much less vitamin C.

People today probably do not want to live as people thousands of years ago did, but scientists say that we would be much healthier if we ate as those ancient people did, cutting the amount of fatty, salty and sweet foods.

68. New kinds of sicknesses have been found because ________. A. the human body has changed compared with the past. B. the way we live nowadays has changed a little. C. our body can’t deal with the changes in life style. D. the way we live today are proper for the human body.

69. What is the main cause mentioned in the article why people suffer from a lot of new

sicknesses?

A. People did little physical exercise. B. People today have a lot of alcohol. C. People today have more tobacco. D. People eat differently from in the past.

While scientists are worried that humans are causing higher temperatures on the Earth, a Maryland man, Ace, thinks we can save the world by spraying(喷射)huge amounts of water into the air.

Ace told the McClatchy News Service that at least 1,000 places should be chosen to spray water. The water would be sprayed between 20 and 200 feet into the air. Thousands of tons of seawater would be sprayed for years at a time.

The 1,000 sites would be picked after more studies. They would be mostly in the Northern Hemisphere(北半球). Ace says he would avoid tropical(热带的)areas of the globe. He says water turns to rain too quickly in these areas for his plan to work.

The water would be changed into vapor. That process requires heat. The water vapor would rise above the Earth. The water vapor would form clouds. The clouds would help in several ways. They would cool the Earth by reflecting sunlight. They would later turn into rains. The rains would provide another way of cooling the Earth.

Ace’s plan has gotten some support from a limited scientific study. Kenneth Caldeira is a climate scientist. He works at the Carnegie Institution’s Department of Global Ecology at Stanford University in California. Caldeira tested some of the Ace’s figures on a computer program. The computer model is used by top scientists to study global climate change. The model showed that the plan might work.

―More tests are planned in 2009. Ideas like Ace’s should be considered carefully and with an open mind,‖ Calderira said. ―Every brilliant(卓越的)invention in the history of technology looked a little bit mad when first put forward.‖ 72.What’s the purpose of Ace’s plan?

A. To reduce air pollution. B. To make summer cooler.

C. To offer dry areas more rain. D. To solve the problem of global warming. 73.According to Ace’s plan,___________.

A. planes would be used to spray water. B. it would be best to spray water on rainy days. C. Seawater would be sprayed high into the air.

D.1,000 sites in the Southern Hemisphere would be chosen. 74.Why wouldn’t Ace spray water in tropical areas?

A. Water is changed into vapor too quickl . B. Water turns to rain too quickly. C. It is hard for vapor to form clouds.

D. It is bad for local plants to have too much rain. 75. It seems that Caldeira ____________.

A. takes Ace’s plan seriously B. thinks Ace’s idea too crazy

C. doesn’t believe the computer’s resul D. agrees to carry out Ace’s plan right away 第二卷(非选择题,共35分) 第一节:任务型读写(共10分;每小题1分)

Time management is important in our daily life. There never seems to be enough hours in the day to accomplish all you need to do. Here are some tips that might be of some help to you.

1. Set up a plan. Go for a week at a time, and decide the most important ones. Include things you want to accomplish. Focus mostly on the things that are important to you.

2. Control your stress. No matter what kind of pressure mounts on you, try to keep cool. Stressing out can lead to an early breakdown, which is definitely counter-productive when you have a list of things to do. It's easier to take a 10-minute break and cool off than to work all week with stress.

3. Shut your door. When working under a schedule, perform your important tasks with your door shut to get them done. This will ensure a better quality time to get what needs to be done, done. 4. Focus on one thing at a time. Forget trying to multi-task! You will lose concentration, and it will take you longer to accomplish what you set out to do.

5. Just say \just say \

6. Stop wasting time on the phone. While talking on the phone, keep your conversations short, and to the point and you'll waste much less time.

7. Be realistic. You can only do what you can do. Don't set out to accomplish the impossible. Do your best, but keep realistic expectations of yourself.

8. Relax. The most important thing is remember to take time to relax,. You need a break every now and then to keep working efficiently. Even if it's a 10-minute walk, get away from your list and get refreshed.
