Our parents and teachers often warn us to stay away from video games, but many of us just find it hard to tear themselves away from them. Last week, our class had a discussion about whether it is beneficial or harmful for high school students to play video games.

About 70% of the students are concerned about the negative effects of video games. They think that players can be addicted to them and can’t concentrate on their study. Another reason is that while sitting in front of a computer they might have little time to communicate with friends and become socially isolated. What’s worse, violent video games can lead to a player’s aggressive behaviour,

which is more harmful than violent movies.

On the contrary, about 30% approve of video games. First of all, playing video games requires creativity and quick response, which are both important in our study. Besides, as a form of entertainment they can help players get relaxed and thus study more efficiently.

In my opinion, video games should not be encouraged among high school students because they are so fascinating that few students especially boys can resist the temptation. As for some students who are crazy about video games, our school should guide and instruct them to choose games suitable for them.

From my point of view, the negative influences of video games should not be neglected. For one thing, video games can distract our attention from study, making us have difficulty absorbing the knowledge. For another thing, video games can have a bad effect on our eyes if we play too much.

From my perspective, we can make full use of video games providing we don’t get addicted to them. Firstly, it’s impossible for us to study for every moment, so playing video games is a good way for recreation. Secondly, video games help us develop logical thinking, which is a necessity for our daily life.
